TMNT Movie DVD in Kids Section. Insult or Understandable?

Just got my first ever TMNT-Related DVD. Whilst scanning the shelves for the 1st TMNT dvd, i looked for it in the movies section...not there.

Then i was quite surprised to find it amongst the kid's section. I thought it really should've been in the movie section. The kid's section usually comprises of TV series along with Disney films. I didn't think it was appropiate for the kids section, because the first one was dark and sometimes miserable like Tatsu beating up his own men.

I was a bit insulted by it, but it was understandable as kids of today are into them because of the new cartoon.

well the movie was kinda dark, but it's not like we saw Leo slicing up Foot Soldiers, Shredder slicing up the TMNT or a Casey/April sex scene.

I picked understandable because the movie was made in 1990 when the cartoon was a big hit. Therefore a lot of kids did see the movie so even though it did have a bit of violence and language, it still was for kids.

Krangfan 08-05-2004 09:50 AM

It's completely understandable. I mean, I watched the movie when I was a little kid. And kids are kind of the target audience.

Kazari 08-05-2004 09:53 AM

Yeah exactly.

well me personally i saw the new TV show of tmnt and i loved it then i found out about the old show and liked that almost more than the old TV show..... but your right..... it shouldn't be in the kids section, cause you ahve splinter getting the crap beat outa him, and the part where TMNT meditate.

Kazari 08-05-2004 09:59 AM

The meditation..what's wrong with it? True the movie had controversy about the violence..i remember my aunt was angry that i saw the movie because of the violence and language but still even though they made the movie close to the comics and had the darker feel..the movie attracted kids because they loved the turtles on the old show.

Jephael 08-05-2004 10:31 AM

I can see how sex and violence can get people worked up, but the meditation shouldn't be a big deal though. I mean they meditated all the time in the original cartoon.
IMO, I think what probably really had parents upset was Splinter's backflash where Hamato Yoshi and Teng Shen were both killed.

I think it would be appropriate enough to have the TMNT movies kept in the kids' DVD section. I mean, I was knee-high to a grasshopper when I first watched them in the theatres. Mom had some concerns about the first movie, but was good about letting me watch it. That's why it's rated PG - but there are plenty of other kids' movies that have received the same rating.

Kazari 08-05-2004 10:45 AM

But also looking at the rating system back int he dya..Top Gun had more stuff than that and it was rated PG! LOL

But i think the most controversial thing was Raph yelling "DAMN!!" really loud LOL

I remember my reaction to it too.
"Mommy, Raphael said a bad word!"
"What did he say, honey?"
"He said the word 'damn'."
And then I got sent to my room.

Kazari 08-05-2004 11:17 AM

LOL!!

Leonardo_the_sword_master 08-05-2004 11:21 AM

okay....

Deathknight 08-05-2004 12:28 PM

I've never seen it in any other section.

Sadako*sCranes 08-05-2004 02:15 PM

I voted understandable.
Not many people must have known that the Japanese word "kuso" Tatsu muttered to himself (after Shredder gave him dagger eyes for failing at April's then walked away) meant "*hit". :D So hey, what adults and kids don't know won't harm them just stick a movie with a "hidden" swear in the kids' section! Nobody would notice the "hidden" swear snuck into the kids' section except TMNT fans!

Ehh...I think it should be in BOTH sections...or...every section!! The more the better!!

I don't really care if it's in the kids section... I find that place more interesting than the drama section XD But I also put TMNT movies up with stuff like the X-men and Spiderman movies...which get classified as kids movies because superheroes are supposed to be for kids... but if you actually look at the content there's violence and language and yadda yadda so those ones (so far as I remember) are actually in the regular section.

:P But I think kids get sheltered way too much, it's insulting to THEIR intelligence to try to 'protect' them from stuff like....."damn"....OH THE HORROR ITS A DAMN WORD :P A word that MOST kids know by kindergarden. I was pretty sheltered and even I knew most swear words by 1st grade. And violence... they're going to, at some point in their lives, encounter violence so why not teach them that violence is wrong--not by being silent about it, but by showing them 'this is violence, and it's wrong'. Tatsu was violent...he was one of the bad guys. The Turtles mention that they don't like violence, they only fight because they have to, to protect others.

Mandi-chan 08-05-2004 02:34 PM

I'd say a bit of both. I know it's a movie that's ment more for kids...but adults like it too. I can't help but feel embarrased when I'm looking for TMNT DVDs cause they're stuck in the kids section with Pokemon and Barney. :goofygri: *sweatdrop*
I'm not overly insulted though, only a little.

Jephael 08-05-2004 02:38 PM

I only get insulted when someone makes a rude comment about it. If it's just some stranger, I try to ignore them; if it's someone I know, I start an argument.

KROW 08-05-2004 02:53 PM

New Line released TMNT as a family movie. Family movies are categorized in the kids section. Understandable.

J Legault 08-05-2004 02:59 PM

I got my copy from a Family secetion at sun Coast. I don't mind it being in a family-related secetion. IThe movie only contains Martail Arts violents and I wouldn't expect Ages 8 & up. To see the movie. The sequals contain less violents and are indeed family related movies.

I still need to get the sequals of TMNT on DVD.
