I was wondering if the Archie comics fit the original series cartoon canon?

How hard is it to get back issues and/or dijests?

The first five issues went with the Original Cartoon Series, but then they branched off into their own (awesome) universe. :)

It takes some searching to find issues these days. Usually the best bet is to check out Ebay or the official site.

So there is no way they could fit in the same continuity?

Even if its not, does it have the same appeal of the old show? or is the attitude different?

Its a bit more serious. like a touch of the new series in it. Very good stories. Its the perfect transition from moving from the kiddified turtles of the original to towards the more serious stories in Mirage. Definitely worth looking at. :nod:

Indeed....it also can be a bit eco-preachy...talking about global warming and sometimes eastern religions...but still an awesome comic...i love it...if u read any issues read the "Future Shark Trilogy" Archie comics at it's greatest!!

If you go to mycomicshop.com, you can probably find most of the Archies issues there. I've bought most of mine from that website and have never experienced any problems. Heh... I've still got a ton of issues to get before I have the entire run, but I've enjoyed what I've read so far. Like jester said, it gets a little eco-preachy at times, but overall, I think it's a great twist on the old 'toon universe (especially the story arcs regarding Intergalactic Wrestling! :D ).

is it true that michaelangelo gets blinded and tortured in this series :o

And also how are the turtles natures in this comic? The same as the classic toon.

No, it's the Image series where everyone was maimed.

As far as their natures go, they started out as being identical to the cartoon series and then evolved. The first 3-issue mini-series and the first 4 issues of the ongoing series were adaptations of cartoon episodes. After that it was all new stories that featured the Turtles learning and maturing. The cartoon series was always status quo; the Turtles never really progressed or evolved as characters. So, for the Archie series, imagine if the Turtles in the cartoon became part-time world travelers and experienced long-term friendships and relationships that sometimes lasted and sometimes resulted in sad endings. Finally, the content for the series was produced by Mirage Studios, and Archie just published what Mirage submitted, so it's chock full of the awesome Mirage goodness and a host of wacky mutants, some that appeared in the cartoon and some that didn't.

wow that sounds really awsome. It is to bad that the classic sartton decided not to go the same route as the archie comics did. Were the archie comics as violent as the mirage comics as well?

Okay yes Mikey was Blinded (by a Molotov Cocktail if I remember correctly) for a time and tortured. This was around 60 or so in the comics and that issue was called Blindsight. This was also around the time of the Death of the Mutanimals if I am thinking right. Also Future Raph in this series was missing an eye. None of the other Turtles were maimed though, even in the future, unlike the Image series.

The Archie comics had their Violence, but in my mind it kept true to the Cartoon as well as the original Comic. I still think the Archie series is one of the best ones out there. As others have said the first 3 issues (which were also a mini-series before that as a test run) were exact to the cartoon, along with a few more issues, but after that it did branch out on it's own. It added in new characters of it's own, as well as changing other characters around.

Leatherhead remained Southern as in the show, but he was a good guy after the first run in and not as dumb. Bebop, Rocksteady and Krang were in the comic too, but they didn't have big roles after the mid 20's in the series. Shredder still popped up occasionally after that, but he wasn't connected to everything going on. He was still kind of cheesy though, probably why he wasn't around too much. Slash was also a good guy eventually in it, and he had a great storyline in the Mutanimals book. Numerous other chracters from the old Toon and toy TMNT showed up, my favorite was Sarnath (as in eye of Sarnath from the series), I always loved them finishing that out.

If you couldn't tell I really love the Archie series and could talk in length about it to anyone who asks. I have to say it is my favorite incarnation of the TMNT, partly due to reading them as a kid, but it really was a good book overall and suggest it to everyone who loves the Turtles.

So I was thinking about picking up some of the Archies. I checked out that mycomicshop website (good call, azure turtle), and it seems they have just about all of the Archies available. Wondered if anyone had any suggestions for issues to start with? I know some of the storylines, and actually had one of the earlier issues when I was a kid (loooooooong gone now! :( ), so I was debating about just picking and choosing some random issues that looked appealing, unless anyone here had any suggestions for arcs to check out, or if there's a particular issue/arc that I should read first so as not to jack up any continuity. You really can't go wrong checking out some of the major story arcs like the Future Shark Triology (42-44), United We Stand Divided We Fall (38-39, for the full story you need Mutanimals 5-6 but the story is easy enough to follow without them), Eye of Sarnoth/Space Triology (47-50), Terracide (55-57 with epilogue in 59-61), and the apocalyptic Future TMNT adventure in 62-66.

As far as single issues go: 8 (Wingnut and Screloose introduced), 14-15 (Jagwar and Dreadmon introduced), 22 (April wields a katana and Raphael humiliates Shredder), 25 (Shredder and Krang part ways), 52 (big mutant battle), 7 and 37 have the turtles in their wrestling costumes, and 58 (fun story about how the turtles got their colors).

Mini-Series and Specials are a mixed bag, but the good ones are April O'Neil's maturation into a complex character (make sure its "April O'Neil" 1-3 because the April O'Neil: May East Saga is just kinda weird) and "Year of the Turtle" 1-3.

Thanks for the info, oldmanwinters. I went with the Terracide arc and the last two, How the Turtles Got Their Weapons. Hope to get more down the road. I really liked the illustrations for the Archies, although there seem to be a few issues here in there where they seem to be really bad. I guess they used different artists occasionally (forgive me - not so much a comic buff)? Overall, I like the whole expanding on the old 'toon characters and making them a bit more grown up. It's a shame they ended this series when they did.

75 Issues is not bad, its about 6 1/4 years worth of TMNT comics,thats pretty good. That is not counting all the spin offs and mini series it got. I mean would we really want it to continue like the current Archie sonic is???

Well no, 75 issues is not bad at all. I guess it's just not wanting a good thing to come to an end. Basically, if there were still good stories to tell, and people who are able to tell them well and want to tell them, then I'm all for the longevity of a comic/show/whatever. However, once you start compromising the quality of it, then there's no point to continue with it, just b/c you can still make a few bucks off it (I take it that's what's going on with the Sonic comic, no?).

Ah well, at least we still have The Forever War to look forward to. Someday...this year...soon? :ohwell:

And yes, the sonic comic was a great way to continue after SatAM was cancelled since it loosely followed that timeline (similar to this comic) but after so many issues there is rarely anything good anymore, which is a shame.

Forever War is the last major story arc of the Archie Comics. They didn't finish it, due to the issue's cancellation... HOWEVER... :D.... if you check out Chris Allan's portfolio, you'll see the cover's they had Planned on using for the last couple of issues.

So they are going to reprint the final arc that never finished?
When is this? Do you think they’ll be a chance of other compilations to come out after this if it sells well?

They never Did this final arc... they got the cover art done, but thats it according to my knowledge. Chris and the other Archie people are teaming up with Mirage to do this final 98(?) Page Graphic Novel. It Should be out sometime this year, just not sure when. But it will be a MUST have or every Archies Comic fan :nod:

Yes...i can't wait for it...cause jester loves archie...and Jester loves Future TMNT so Jester will be buying this graphic novel.
