Tales of the TMNT 20

Tales 20 preview is up!

http://www.ninjaturtles.com/comics/m...vol2/20/20.htm

This issue contains three short stories:

"The Trophy" - 12 page Master Splinter tale by by Steve Murphy, Ray-Anthony Height and Derek Fridolfs. Splinter deals with some hunters.

"The Cure" - 10 page fish-woman story by Steve Murphy, Jim Lawson and Eric Talbot. The fish-woman takes a journey.

"The Rippling" - 14 page TMNT story by Jake Black, Steve Murphy, Peter Laird, and Fernando Pinto. The Turtles investigate an underwater phenomena.

On the cover it shows Splinter in a jogging uniform along with the fish lady.

Interesting... three tales in one! Well, I guess we don't have to wait three months to know about three events that occured between the end of Volume 2 and the beginning of Volume 4.

DrSpengler 02-22-2006 06:19 PM

It was alright. I enjoyed the first and last story the most.

The Trophy had a good moral to it, even if I did breeze through it in a minute due to the lack of dialogue. But I think that was the point.

The Cure was a little disorienting. I dunno if it was just the art, but I wasn't sure what the hell was going on most of the time (so...she's swimming and stabbing fish? That's it?). The ending was a bit predictable, but it was still cool to see the fish-people from Tales #1 again.

The Rippling was the strongest of the three and it was nice to get another supernatural story. I take them over the excessive sci-fi stuff anyday (though I do miss the TMNT fighting thugs and ninjas). Some snappy dialogue between the TMNT.

Leo: "Mike saw happy because he's happy. Rpah saw skulls because he's-"

Raph: "Shut up."

The ending sorta had a "Jumanji"-vibe to it. Still good for a quickie.

But the preview for #21 threw me through a loop. The C.O.W.boys of Moo Mesa? Seriously?

**Spoilers** No Whining!!!

I just picked it up today.

First tale: Splinter solo adventure
I liked this tale. It's good to see Splinter in action and teaching a lesson to some macho hunting types. Not to mention I dig Splinter's jogging suit! :P

Second Tale: Fish Woman/Giant Turtle Saga
This is a prequel of sorts to Leo's adventures in the sewer during Vol. 2 #4-5. We see the fish woman and her giant turtle companion in action to save a baby fishperson. I also liked this tale, I'm a fan of the fishpeople and I'm glad to see them return. Perhaps this story means that some of their species are still alive?

Third Tale: TMNT rowing around Manhattan
I wasn't much of a fan of this one. There's been too much mystical/magical type stuff in the Tales comic recently.

Next issue: The Wild West C.O.W.boys of Moo Mesa!
Now tell me that this isn't going to rock?

Got Tales 20 today...Which I think it's a first for me to actually get a TMNT comic the day it comes out to stores... anyways here's my review:

The Trophy: Nude Splinter! Nude Splinter! Oh yea... Bambi died.. stupid Hunters.... :(

The Cure: So...fish lady, large turtle, sick baby.... fish lady and large turtle fight off...Ichthyosaurs?? Anyways the meat from the Ichthyosaurs apperantly is a cure all for baby aquatic sickness...aww

The Rippling: An object has a curse on it that effects the turtles by their personalities.... To Mike he thinks he finds an underwater city of...turtles....where he's um...their chosen one...a happy "dream".....Raph on the other hand just sees death and destruction and losing his brothers. We never get to see what Don and Leo find. An interesting story.

All 3 stories are quite good....altho the first one is quite sad. Stupid hunter....

Aztec General 02-23-2006 07:38 AM

Actually Leo finds a Conquistador's helmet. We never we see what Don would have found.

DrSpengler 02-23-2006 09:40 AM

Yeah, I think that the ending where "the glowy thing" is shown to have survived would imply that Leo didn't see what it really was and that the helmet was just an illusion.

But I agree, I would've liked to have seen Don' hallucination.

Anyways, I liked the Splinter-story and I didn't care much for the others. I generally like to see Splinter as a more active part in the stories. But overall, I wasn't too impressed. The stories are too short, one doesn't evne have the TMNT in it and the last one's art is just so unturtle-ish. But I liked the cover, the Luna Brothers rock!

I'm glad the guys at Mirage tried somethin' different with this issue. I think they should have Tales with short stories at least three times a year. It'd be even better if they had a comic that had short stories in it and it would be an ongoin' series and a monthly thing similar to Turtle Soup or other past Mirage anthologies. Anyways I'll be pickin' up this issue next weekend cuz I already got plans for the rest of the week.

Spoiler:
I see no reason why I need to use spoiler tags in issue discussion threads. If anyone can't figure out that a discussion of that issue's plot will take place within the thread created to DISCUSS THAT ISSUE, then I don't know what to tell them.

Prequel? I seen this as a sequel, where the egg the fish lady saved in vol 2 has hatched into that new (smaller but still huge) turtle. hence her caveman-esque drawings of leo looking mad.... wonder where the father to her kid is...

This issue was okay... decent, at best, in my opinion.

"The Trophy" actually had a good message. This is an opinion I've held for a long time. It makes no sense to kill animals for trophy purposes, otherwise, we might as well respect Ted Bundy for killing for his personal gain.

"The Cure"...... Okay.... Weird stuff! Didn't really get its purpose.

"The Rippling" was okay... nothing special, just a tale of the guys encountering something strange in open water. At least Ethiopia gets to eat(?).

I'm missing out here. In the UK, We're not getting any Tales OF The TMNT in our comic-shops anymore.

2 out of the 3 comic book shops i go to in aberdeen get in Tales, and TMNT vol 4... so perhaps its just the shops in your area?

blue_angel99 04-01-2006 11:53 PM

Just read it...:D

1)the trophy- Splinter in a jogging suit!:P It was cool how splinter jumped those hunters! He kicks butt. I do love animals but I don't see it morally wrong for people to hunt for sport as long as it is legal. It's not like all deers are endangered. It made me sad to see Splinter cry...

2)The Cure- I never read the actual issue with Leo and the fish lady but I have read synopsis. It is good to see that she and her child are alive :)

3) The Rippling- Cool story. With all the different creatures and worlds the turtles have seen, it's a wonder that they all don't fantasize about the possibility of a Turtle World somewhere. Seeing an egg(life) and then a girl turtle(love) shows his desire for a family to call his own. Poor Mike  . Raph has some major issues to deal with or else he has seen way too many "Planet of the Apes" and "Jaws" movies. Leo sure was confident that he would not be affected by the glowy thing. I bet Don would have seen a peacefull utopia where humans and other being coexsist in peace. Since Leo worries alot, I think his fears would have been revealed which would be the deaths of those he loves and not being able to save them.

I can't wait for issue 22. LadyShredder...wicked!
