Hypothetical question
A doctor gives you a chance to take part in an experiment. You will loose your body, but your brain will be placed in a jar, in which you will experience a fantasy world that looks, sounds and feels real. Once entering this world, you will be completely unaware that you are in fact a floating brain in a jar*.
Nothing can disrupt the process and nothing can possibly go wrong that will endanger your brain. That's how you stay, totally part of your fantasy world, whatever it may be. Only one thing stops the process: You. Would you go for it? Would you not go for it? *If only Stockman had been so lucky. |
Random observation: What's up with this Vanilla Sky I'm seeing? How strange...
Back to hypothetical reality: It would obviously depend on the person's ability to live out their dreams in reality. So, if I won the lottery, that doctor can go inject himself. If I was blown to pieces for whater reason, please disregard my last statement. :embarass: |
This does not appeal. I'm the type of person who lives inside her own head most of the time anyway.
'Sides, scientists are untrustworthy. |
Well, let's see... I'm not sure. See, the thing is, the brain is a terrible weapon. If only YOU can self destruct yourself by a mere thought, how dangerous is that? In moments of depression or self-depression, a simple, mere thought could destroy you, by accident.
I'm not not sure if the fantasy is worth it, maybe. I'll have to think on this a bit longer. But I don't like that ability to stop yourself with one little thought. Quick question, though. If you 'stop' the whole process, what happens? Do you die? Can you go back to your actual body and the real world? |
Nope, not happening.
|
Ok, maybe I should put down some ground rules. Think of the process as being in a dream; anything can happen and, since it all comes straight from your brain, it makes perfect sense. The process is also irreversible, so if you do go in there's no backing out.
Also, let's not turn this into a discussion of whether or not the perfect world exists, as that isn't the point. The point is you have a shot at a fantasy world, totally and utterly tailored to your whim that you may or may not choose by giving up your real life. |
I can't believe I'm typing this, heh...
But I'd choose my real life. All in all, I'd rather live my real life than know that my happiness was fake in any way. Anyway, remember... there is no 'good' without 'bad'. No 'happy' without 'sad'. Each without it's counter doesn't really exist, and you begin to lose the definition of each. |

Can I masturbate?

wow....very Vanilla Sky indeed. (That movie disturbed me beyond my rational comprehension BTW)
So anyway.....my fantasy world, my dreams come true....or the one I have now. Not even a hard choice. I choose my real life and everything in it. :D |

good question, well it kind of takes me back to the whole deal of the matrix. Would I enjoy a world that is fake and never know it was fake?
I think over all I would laugh at the doctors face and ask him if he was on acid, then consider what he was saying then run off and kill some hobos. http://www.filmfestivals.com/berlin_...g_ampsycho.jpg |
Maybe instead of asking the question I should have revelled in the fact I was actually able to spell "Hypothetical".
