Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows - Please Use Spoiler Tags

We now have a title for Harry Potter VII. But if you want to find out for yourself, visit J.K. Rowling's Web site and play a little game of hangman.

Rowling's U.S. publisher, Scholastic Inc., released a brief statement Thursday announcing the name of the world's most anticipated children's book, the finale to her phenomenally popular fantasy series.

No publication date or other details were offered. Rowling is still working on the book, she explained on her Web site in an entry posted early Thursday.

"I'm now writing scenes that have been planned, in some cases, for a dozen years or even more," she wrote. "I don't think anyone who has not been in a similar situation can possibly know how this feels: I am alternately elated and overwrought. I both want, and don't want, to finish this book (don't worry, I will.)"

Meanwhile, she set up a test for her Potter fans.

If you go to jkrowling.com, click on the eraser and you will be taken to a room — you'll see a window, a door and a mirror.

In the mirror, you'll see a hallway. Click on the farthest doorknob and look for the Christmas tree. They click on the center of the door next to the mirror and a wreath appears. Then click on the top of the mirror and you'll see a garland.

Look for a cobweb next to the door. Click on it, and it will disappear. Now, look at the chimes in the window. Click on the second chime to the right, and hold it down. The chime will turn into the key, which opens the door. Click on the wrapped gift behind the door, then click on it again and figure out the title yourself by playing a game of hangman.

Or you can just take Scholastic's word for it: "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."

Raph's Girl note: The Deathly Hallows?! Is Icabod Crane in it? :P

Yay!! I can't wait for this. They've had it on pre-order already at a store near me.

It comes out on 7/7/07, yes? That's the perfect date.

By the way, I LOVE J.K.'s site. It's so awesome, and especially for her fans!

Roseangelo 12-21-2006 07:47 PM

I've heard the 7/7/07 rumor myself, but there's no official date yet. If she's still writing it (which the press releases today claim she is), it'll be tough for them to hit that date. (From what I understand they need at least 6 months between the completion of the manuscript and the publication date.)

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Kind of a weird name, but whatever. I'm super excited for this book, although at the same time, I'm dreading it. I really really don't want the series to end.

Exactly how I see it. I want to read it so bad, and I know I'll be reading it, not being able to wait for the end... But I do dread it, too. It'll be sad. I love these books. Heck, I even have a picture of me in England AT Platform 9 3/4. (There actually IS one!) :)

I thought the last book was extremely lame at some points so I'm a bit worried about this one...

Mecha Cow 12-22-2006 09:55 AM

It's a shame this will be the last one, it feels unreal for the series to end. I actually thought each book was even better than the one before it, so I have no doubts about this one. Rowling is one hell of a storyteller, I'm sure she has something great in store.

Spoiler:
I hope Harry doesn't die though...

OA 12-22-2006 03:02 PM

Pretty neat little game there....i also love the series and so dont want it to end...im also a fan of the movies but those guys are getting so old, its starting to get a lil unbelievable...regardless, i'll be picking this up day 1 if possible...

Yeah, though... Ok, I LIKE Harry ok, but I don't love him as a character. In fact, in book 5 he annoyed the crap outta me. Ron and Hermione's where it's at.

That being said...

Spoiler:
I really don't have an opinion on if Harry dies or not. It'd be nice if he didn't, but if he does... It'd be a heck of a shocker and lesson to the readers. It may have the potential of making it better in some ways. The possibilities are endless. Juuuust as long as Ron and Hermione live, I'm all good.

Hopefully, more Ron and Hermione goodness so the non-believers will FINALLY after extreme hinting (and even TELLING) in 6 books, will shut up. :)

Mecha Cow 12-22-2006 06:00 PM

Spoiler:
Yeah, I won't really mind if he does die, as long as the story is good. I'd just prefer it if he lived after all 'we' have been through. As for others dying, I think Rowling said 'someone who shouldn't die, dies', or something like that. And we all know she has no problems killing characters off. :( Man, I can't wait for this book.

Spoiler:
Oh, and I'm not really interested in the romance stuff myself, but after book six it's pretty obvious Ron and Hermione wind up together, so no worries there.

Blasphemy! Honestly, that is one of my most favourite parts of the books. Ron + Hermoine = Forever! WEEE!

Jo Dawn 12-22-2006 06:22 PM

Another interesting thing. The title of the book was announced on the Winter Solstice... and... In Order of the Pheonix, it states ' "...at the solstice will come a new... and none will come after..." '

Cool, huh? She thinks of everything.

OA 12-22-2006 06:28 PM

Sheesh...that is pretty neat i guess...

I wonder what she'll do after the series ends...more books or call it day and just sit around and count her bazillions...?

iris 12-22-2006 07:04 PM

Spoiler:
Kinda sad, but I'm not that curious about whether Harry will live through the final book. I just want to know what side Snape is on and who he's scamming. There's a theory floating that Dumbledore was going to die anyway, even before he took Harry on that fool's errand. Throughout the books, Snape has been set up as a healer to rival any other, but is that the real reason Dumbledore asked for him after the poisoning?

It is very neat. She's so awesome.

After this last book, she's not writing any more Harry Potter books; at least, not for money. They only thing she was thinking of doing is doing an encyclopedia of sorts of all the characters and ideas that didn't make it in the books for charity.

Which, I think will be awesome. I'd love that.

Roseangelo 12-22-2006 08:31 PM

None of the stuff being put in spoiler text is a spoiler!

And book 6 has been out for a year and a half, so that's fair game.

Sorry.. I've just been annoyed with how everyone's been so secretive about the new book title and everything in the last two days.

But discussion on what COULD happen isn't a spoiler... :P

Jo Dawn 12-22-2006 08:43 PM

Better to be safe than sorry when it comes to HP.

I dunno... some of the 'conjecture' is based on things JKR has said about the end of the series, which I'd call spoiler material. *shrug*

Plus we've had... disagreements... on this board about people posting their theories out in the open, especially if the theories turn out to be close to correct.

Truly. I don't know how I'm going to get to read the last book before hearing about it by accident. :(

Peanut 12-22-2006 08:54 PM

Spoiler to us or not, some people might not have read the book yet, so like JD said, better to be safe than sorry.

I've been very lucky in this regard. I almost had the 6th book spoiled for me though. Right when I bought it, my sister picked it up and flipped the pages, only to come across the biggest part of the book, and reading a key line about said part, she knew
Spoiler:
Snape killed Dumbledore
, I could tell by the look on her face that she had just ruined the book for herself. I grabbed my book and ran to the cash, ears covered and head down, payed for it and got out as quick as possible. I then avoided contact with her for the weekend it took me to read it.

Mecha Cow 12-23-2006 08:08 AM

I think most HP fans had that one spoiled for them...I'm staying the hell off the internet next summer.

Or I'll try, at least. :(
