Best Way to Store Comics?
 

Ok, as I have stated in some of my posts, i am new to comics, but an avid collector of many other items. I wanted to know what the best way to store comics. is.

I have them in plastic sleeves (like the Fleer card sleeves, the ones for magazines) 3-5 comics in a sleeve, all in a big binder for now.

Please give me ideas or tell me if that is NOT the way to store them. Thanks!

I wouldn't recommend that way at all; you'll kill your spines.

Get yourself some standard comic bags and backing boards (only one comic per bag/board!), and then comic boxes to put 'em in. The comics should stand vertically. If you don't have enough comics to fill the box (causing them to fall down), stick something in there to fill the empty space and keep 'em propped up.

Is there a site online where I could order the stuff? I don't have a local comic book store at all, I have been ordering everything online.

Found a site, but everything is in quantities of 100...

I really only need 10-20. Any ideas?

I say go ahead and buy the 100, cause you never know when you might need them. like the old rule "Better safe than sorry". And the only way i know to get them induvidually is to go to a comic shop.

Vertically, eh? What are the benefits of storing them this way versus just laying them on their backsides, so to speak?

So they don't curl. If you stack a lot of them on their backsides the comics on top start to curl at the spine since that's the thickest part of the book. I'm not sure if the curl will last when you pick them up, but better safe than sorry, right? Also, if they're loose in a box like that, the bottom right corners of the books will slide forward which could be very bad if the comics behind them suddenly fall forward from the top. The safest thing to do is to keep them vertical and ensure that they can't be accidentally bent very easily (such as filling the box full of books if you don't have enough comics).

Another important thing to remember is always use archival material. Just because it says they're made for comics doesn't mean they are good for long-term storage.
I use polybags for my cheap comics, but for investment grade books it's strictly 2mm-thick Mylar and acid-free backing boards (white on both sides).
I'm in the process of switching over to DrawerBoxes, because they are much stronger and you can stack them and still access each box. Plastic boxes also work great for the more valuable books because they're almost waterproof and can take being moved around.
For extremely rare and valuable books, CGC grading is my top choice as it protects them better than anything else and increases value in many cases.You can buy special boxes for storing those.

Of course, none of this matters if you don't store them in the right place! Don't forget to keep them in a dry, cool area where smoke and pets can't get, a few feet off the floor (in case of flooding).

hey guys what about comic bag/board size?

Some do silver, some do modern sizes

I have mine in silver, which is plenty of room, although the comic slides just a bit in these, like 1 cm each way if moved quickly.

The modern size boards/bags fit the comic tight, very tight, so it can't move. I'm thinking about going this way with modern I think.

What are the differences you guys think? and what do you guys use for your turtles comics? I like Silver size and all, but after I ordered a book off ebay, it came in the modern (tight fit) size and I really liked how it was presented. No edges, no moving.

I'm afraid some comic books might be too thick for this size though.

I always go with modern-sized bags & boards for mine. And this site sells really cool long boxes that are stackable. Highly recommended if you have a lot of comics to store.

I have all of my vintage DC, Marvel and Mirage comics stored in plastic bins, though the Archie and Dreamwave TMNT comics are in a cardboard box. The new stuff by IDW is kept in a sideloader backpack, though at some point I might look for a better place to keep them.
