I agree with you on season four, I enjoyed this season the best out of all of them because of the deeply personal issues the turtles where facing. And not just the turtles but the villans and secondary characters too like Karai and her take over of the Shredder role and her quest for vengence, Hun and him becoming his own villan and raising the purple dragons from petty street thugs to a sophisticated crime syndicate, and Baxter given some back ground and made into a sympathatic character with a tragic back ground, as well as Casey and his issues with Hun and his involvment with his father's death. Season four was a season with alot of meat and patatoes and not just the salad. This season was bold, in some ways bad (like trying to be a R-rated movie on a kids station) but in most ways bold and intense and mature that was ball bustingly good. With strong continuity that led right up to the events in season five.
I'm enjoying season five so far but you are right that it has a sort of surrealness to it that seems a bit detached from the turtles personally as characters. I think that this in part is due to the small mumber of episodes in season five, so it has less time to felsh out and get personal with the turtles and the new characters it introduced and seemed some and couldn't take it's time like season four could in terms of story-telling and showing deeper nusances to it. Season five seems very event driven (so far) that is only 12 episodes long and I think the writers where concentrating on connecting the dots and getting all the angles to the plot fleshed out to tell the story reather than delving into the turtles or acolytes. Had this been a longer season with more time to take its time and develop the characters and their back grounds and how each other the turtles felt and grew with the training and the events presented to them we might have gotten something was more personal to the turtles like season four was. But then I haven't see all of season five yet and so far I'm enjoying it so it might see more that make me enjoy it even more so I'll have to wait and see.
