Is it from a comic book series?

Scandia 03-24-2008 04:57 AM

It's from Nintendo Power Magazine back in 1989. I was between 6th and 7th grade.

Ah, the memories.

Like Scandia said, it's from Nintendo Power. Basically, they used to run a monthly comic strip called "Howard and Nester" and each strip involved a hit game or movie/cartoon.

MrPliggins 03-24-2008 06:37 AM

Nostalgia indeed. I was about ten years old. I always thought these were the oddest looking drawings of tmnts I've ever seen.

GK Punk 03-24-2008 07:51 AM

There were a lot worse in Nintendo Power haha

Scandia 03-24-2008 08:14 AM

I was 11 years old and still very much a little girl. All I cared about was playing video games, playing with dolls, and watching cartoons and Nickelodeon shows. Oh yeah, and wearing name brand clothes because it was trendy. And being number one in the class. Not into teen or grown-up pursuits yet at all.

GK Punk 03-24-2008 08:35 AM

I think I was about 9. WWF, NES, TMNT and G.I. Joe were my life.

Especially Metroid and Zelda.

Why do the Turtles have blue eyes? And why does it sometimes show two turtles with purple bandanas?

Coola Yagami 03-24-2008 08:06 PM

Cause they were probably still too 'new' at the time and the Nintendo Power guys didn't know all the turtles names and colors right.

i remember subscribing on a nintendo magazine a cuple of years ago, but they quit subscribing it:(

That's an interesting look for April, the whole Flashdance off the shoulder thing. She just needs a pair of legwarmers too.:) In the cartoon she had that jumpsuit, they should have had her switch it up with other weird fashions from the 80's.

oldmanwinters 03-24-2008 09:42 PM

Heh, I remember these. I loved the Star Fox issue adaptation too! Thanks for sharing!

TheUltimateShredhead 03-25-2008 09:42 PM

Awesome avatar oldmanwinters! it's from turtles in time isn't it:ohwell:?

Drtooth 03-26-2008 09:43 AM

Ah yes, the Howard and Nestor Comics. Wasn't Howard based of someone working at the US branch of Nintendo at the time? It's been so long since I've seen an 80's Nintendo Power Magazine. I miss the comics so much. I even loved the Mario and Zelda comics they published in the 90's.

Who drew this, though? I looks very manga style, long before Manga was popular in the US (outside of those 1980's anime groups that actually met in people's houses or general purpose areas in libraries or places like that). I really like their take on it, even though they look like they're wearing sunglasses.

Do you happen to have the walkthrough maps as well? It had the same sort of design for the Turtles.

I think they continued these into the 90's for a while, but with only Nestor. I swear that at one point I saw one based on the Taz Mania game.

GK Punk 03-26-2008 10:39 AM

Yeah Tooth, I have those. I can post those up sometime if you want.

DrSpengler 03-26-2008 11:22 AM

I remember Howard and Nester from the good ole days, though I never realized when I was a kid how Japanese the comic looked.

I actually dig that design for April. In all honesty, I think it's one of my favorites.

Yup! Either that or the Sega Genesis adaptation "The HyperStone Heist." Those were the good old days of franchised properties.:D
