What's Michaelangelo Good For Question?

Two things that made me go "huh" in this episode . When Michaelangelo stalks off after his little spat with the doctor lady and he trips and falls on the ground, and she asks him if he is alright, he says in a peevish voice:

"I am a turtle. Remember! I tripped over something"

um, what the hell? That was a werid responce/reaction to her inquary. What does being a turtle have to do with anything? I just thought it was a weird responce. BTW I liked how breathless he sounded when he said "I tripped over something" line, I thought it was well delivered.

the other thing that made me go "huh" was the whole scene where Michaelangelo is despretely trying to swim away from the lily pads and he is "blown up". And then he just pulls himself onto the boat with no explaination to how he got away. You think the doctor would be anxious enough to ask; I mean since from her point of view he just got blown up. But it was never said how he got away, it was just accepted that he did.

I hate how he acts in this episode, he's seriously rude to that woman.
The episode should be called "Why's Michaelangelo a Dick to the Dr."

Coola Yagami 03-31-2008 09:37 AM

Mikey was ashamed he goofed up in front of the doc.

It's like - I'm a turtle! Remember! (trying to act bad ass and macho and cover up the fact he just tripped like a dumbass)
I tripped over something... (no way to cover that up, so he has to admit he just tripped like a dumbass)

triplexxx 03-31-2008 03:42 PM

Guess saying "I'm a turtle" was an implication for "I'm tough". Apparently from that lily pad scene, he dived under before the lily could get him, they' should've put more smoke or something to conceal the cliffhanger since he appeared to just disappear in the animation.

ok I guess one can interpert the "I'm a turtle. Remember!" line as that. :ohwell: He did look ashamed for tripping over his own feet, but if he wanted to say he was tough, why could he just say that didn't hurt or something? I thought that maybe his "I'm a turtle" line, was more of a last shot at the doctor for her attitude toward the animals that they had no emotions or feelings (which obviously offended Michaelangelo) so after Michaelangelo fell and hurt himself and he was like "I'm a turtle. Remember"! as if saying "hey I'm a turtle, according to you I have no emotions", or something like that. He just seemed almost defiant when he said it.

I assumed that he dove under water to avoid the explosion as well. I just thought that it would have had some explanation to it since from the POV from the audiance he just blew up, I don't know if I was the doctor and I saw some one blow up I and then he just came up out of no where I'd would ask how he got away. The animators should have showed Mike explaining it. :ohwell:

Am I alone in liking how Michaelangelo reacted in this episode? Yes he was a bit harsh in this episode but I liked seeing Michaelangelo showing some anger. He really took the doctors attitude personaly and I thought it added depth to it. I also dound it intersting that Michaelangelo reacted so strongly to the doctors oppinions since he ushaully is alot more open minded on what other think. It really shows how strongly he felt about the situation and how much the doctors attitude irriated him. Michaleangelo showed a diffrent side to his character in this episode and it was a treat. I thought his reactions where reasonble.

What did she do to diserve his attitude towards her?
To be quite honest even though it's a cartoon and this is silly of me to say, it made me think of Michaelangelo as a bit racist.

Yikes! Racist Putrescent? :o Thats going a bit over board don't you think? :ohwell: And not to bring the real world into this but why is it when some one is angry at some one of a diffrent color it's assumed their race has something to do with it? I don't think Mike would have acted any diffrently than if she was white or Asian or any other ethnic background, I think what caused Mike to act toward her the way he did was the Doctors ignorance toward animals. But if you want to look at this from a racist point of view it could be argued that the Doctor was being rather "racist" toward animals as being dumber lower life forms than humans, which of course Michaelangelo also shares since he is, for all purposes, started life out as "just an animal" and here the doctor is making blase remarks about their inferiority, her remarks most have hit close to home with Michaelangelo.

But I'm curious now, did any one else get the impression that Michelangelo was racist?

triplexxx 04-04-2008 02:20 AM

Nah, Idon't believe in that bull.

Mikeys not a color he's a mutant turtle person lol:lol:
Remember how many times the turtles got mad at humans in the series?
I just never saw him act like such a jerk before this episode.

Spitfire 04-04-2008 06:23 AM

I gotta go with Putrescent. He didn't treat Carter very well. Hell none of the turtles did for that matter. They all bagged on him and called him stupid all the time even though he saved their asses all the time. And when he betrayed them to help get them into Dregg's Tower they totally assumed he would do something like that, pretty shady. They didn't even second guess it.

hahaha omg I totally forgot about that!!!
Wow yeah Mike was the worst always saying he didn't trust Carter.
There really arent many people of color on the old show and if you notice the turtles always treat the ones there are like crap...and then theres the case of the mutating bebop toy..why's he white when we all know he's a black man.
*btw if you people are taking this at all seriously you need to get out more often*

Coola Yagami 04-04-2008 10:01 AM

Of course they're racist. Don't they treat all humans like crap cause they're non-green??? The only reason they kinda sorta put up with April is cause she puts out.

Ninjinister 04-04-2008 05:55 PM

I actually could see why they were hassling Carter. The kid was nothing but a walking Deus ex Machina. When he appeared, the Turtles randomly got 20 times weaker and couldn't do anything unless Carter bailed them out at the last minute.

To be honest you bringing up the possiability that Mikey might be racist seemed like taking it seriously, or at the very least like you where trying to bait a responce. The topic seemed pretty benign until you brought that up and now it seems like you are saying that if some one is taking it seriously due to your remark they shouldn't :ohwell:

I hope I'm not coming across as combative I'm just don't get why the possiablity that Mikey might be racist was brought up in the first place. :-?

Because we're talking about how he treated the dr. character, and she just happens to one of the very few black characters on the show.
I honestly don't care what color they are, be it a white lady, black or purple Mikey was a friggin acting like a 2 year old in that episode and why?
Over a pigeon that's been in only one episode and the woman just helped save for him, pretty ungrateful attitude if you ask me.
And even after the fact they had him acting rude to her most of the episode as if her not beliving he could talk to this bird was her fault.
I think this is one of the worst episodes of the series simply because of how he acts, it ruins it for me.
Also the one where he acts like a cry baby the entire time about his birthday "I wasn't Born Yesterday Dude, I was Born Today". Omg gimmie a break Emo Mikey!
Michaelangelo was also the one when Carter first came around constantly saying things like "I don't know man I don't trust this guy".
Like I said it's just a cartoon but in a lol way I thought to myself wow Mikeys a prick or a racist.
And I wouldn't really call me stating my own quick thoughts on a fictional show "baiting".
And really isn't this why people post on message boards with their thoughts to get a response from people?
It's like the people who scoff and say oh that person tries way to hard at something, well gosh sorry I don't sit around like a lump and do nothing with my life. :P

you make it seem like he was a jerk to her the entire time, when after the incial confrontation they started to get along with each and played off well, they made a good team. The whole underlying theme in this episode was how humans regard animals as inferior or brainless that have no feelings, like the scienstists experiement to make a perfect animal with human intelligence (if I remember his plan correctly) this attitude Michaelangelo obviously took personaly. I think he reacted the way he did to the Doctor not because she didn't believe him about communicating with Pete (or because she was black ;)), but because I think he expected her to have more respect for the animals since she worked with them so closely. Yeah Michaelangelo acted harshly but I think that was just an indication of how he deeply he felt about the situation, maybe it wasn't right for him to react the way he did (considering she did help his pigeon) but she did eventually start to see things from his POV about how animals even if they can't talk like people can, can still communicate. I liked this episode because of the delima he faced on saving the turtles on his own and whether or not he had what it took to do it. Which this episode proved he did, and even though you where offended by his behavior in this episode I liked seeing Michaelangelo displaying emotions other than over exuberance and excitment. And I'm not alone on this one. I think the worst Michaelangelo episode has got to be Michaelangelo, the Sacred Turtle **shakes head** that was just terriable

I didn't think his behavior was that off the wall in this episode, the turtles made it seem like they forgot his birthday and it upset him. Given the circumstance i think I'd be hurt too. And the other turtles have definatly acted more emo and self centered than Michaelangelo on occassion, like Leonardo's freak out episode in where he became all emo (over a dream) and left the team because he thought he was a lousy leader and then became cocky at the end with his "I knew you couldn't get along with out me" remark. Or how abouyt the times where Raphael is rude or makes a snarky remark about some one?

yeah but, they where all distrustful of Carter when he first showed up, not just Michaelangelo, and so what if they where whats wrong with being cautious and voicing that discretion out loud. During Red Sky the whole city had pretty much turned against them and (including April to an extent) where persucuted by them, I think it made sence that they would be distrustful of another human given the prejudiced crap they where putting up with from every one at that point. But they eventually accepted Carter and Michaelangelo even became close friends with him, so he's hardly racist 8)

I rather liked this episode and I thought the whole hybrid animals thing was cool. Michelangelo was actually useful in this episode and he was actually pretty cute with that pigion. I also liked the Dr. Goodfellow mostly because she is voice by Phylicia Rashād!(think Cosy show) I love her and I thought she did a great job! Michelangelo and her where cool together.

he was pissed off and had nothing else better to say...typicial guy thing.

You're wrong. Dr. Goodfellow was voiced by Lilly Tomlin. I watched the episode just now & can garuntee, without a shadow of a doubt, that it is NOT Phylicia Rashad. Anyone who watches the cosby show at all would know that. Lily Tomlin was the voice of Mrs. Frizzle on 'The Magic School Bus' & is rather recognizeable to those who watched the show.

GK Punk 04-01-2010 07:06 AM

Check the credits on the DVD. I just did a few searches and can come up with nothing about Lilly Tomlin being on TMNT, but I can find several sources listing Phylicia Rashad doing that voice. Now I'm curious to know what the credits say on that episode.

Without finding this ep to refresh my memory of the context in which he says that line, he could have meant "I'm a turtle, of course I'm not okay when I trip over something, especially if I land on my back!" :P
