Did anyone else think the idea of turning Shredder into an Utrom was too much?

Did anyone else hate the idea of turning Shredder into an Utrom in the new episodes? I personally thought that idea was too over the top and they should have kept him as a human.

If they needed an Utrom, why didn't they just write Krang back into the series? Krang was a good character. :)

I thought it was a nice twist that I wouldn't have seen coming if I hadn't seen spoilers here. Although, it was painfully obvious all through Secret Origins what they were leading up to...though I still love those episodes.

ToTheNines 05-20-2008 07:52 PM

They didn't need an utrom, they needed something to differentiate the series a bit more from the comics. Besides, the episode aired in 2003, get over it.

Roseangelo 05-20-2008 08:47 PM

I also liked it because it added a different twist to all of the stories, since so many of the early episodes were coming from the comics. And, most importantly, it allowed for Leonardo to cut off Shredder's head at the end of Return to New York. That was one of the most awesome things ever.

When that was first revealed I originally didn't like it because the fact that the suit was mostly a robot and not a human ninja master kind of bothered me at first. However in Season 3 they kept the Oroku Saki side of him still in the series, so I warmed up to the idea and got over it.

I also liked how Season 5 proved the original Oroku Saki actually existed as part of the Ninja Tribunal, so in the end it didn't matter.

Technically he was a human and a shredder... many years ago.:P
But seriously, I thought the concept of Ch'rell was original at the very least. I have no problem with it. It did take some getting used to but it added originality to the series. Like rose said, it was among the first concepts to deviate from the comics and develop a sense of identity.

[SMART ALEC] I agree that Krang was a great character, but he was not an utrom in the Old Toon. And as for writing him into the new series... they did. He appeared in the secret origins arc... as an utrom.[/SMART ALEC]

Though in a way didn't bringing in the 'real' Oroku Saki into the story later kinda cheapen the effect for the Ultrom Shredder. This makes all the cool comic events like Saki killing Yoshi and the Return to New York thing kinda lame since they were done by an impostor Shredder. Hell Karai was crying over what Hun would call 'an alien squid'. And had it been the real Shredder all along (a demon instead of an Utrom) it makes that much more sense for Yoshi to appear at the end to help them end it all.

Shredder wasn't an Utrom, the impostor Shredder was but the real one was a Tengu Demon. Sides if he wasn't an Utrom Leo couldn't have decapitated him nor would the turtles be able to so fiercely fight him. I mean they impale him and everything.

Not to defend The Lost Season by any means because I'm not a huge fan of it but Yoshi came out at the end to help because he knew the threat that was being posed. He knew of the Tengu Shredder and the Tribunal. I'm sure Ancient One told him all about it.

Kendamu 05-21-2008 12:31 AM

I didn't mind it at all. The comics, movies, and OT had him as a human. If I want human Shredder I can watch and read those.

I always assumed that Yoshi's apperence was cause by the unconsious minds of his....er...um..."grandsons." I re-watched the Lost Season yesterday after I picked it up from Target, and Yoshi appeared as a combination of all four of the unconcious Turtles acolyte amulets. My assumption is they see Yoshi as the ultimate manifestation of good to counter Shredder as the ultimate evil.

But then again, I'm known to read way too much into stuff. :P

thebrownranger 05-21-2008 02:26 PM

I think they overdid it, but I later accepted the fact he's an utrom. It's not like anybody could magically change that.

gobo 05-21-2008 02:53 PM

I remember there were riots over the Utrom/Shredder connection, but I thought it was clever as hell. Plus, I kinda saw it as a nod to the incarnation of the franchise that made it as well-known as it is today.

Yep, that was the highlight of season 1, if not the whole series.

Revan 05-21-2008 04:04 PM

though I liked it a lot more before I leanred he was an utrom. Actually when chrell stood up an walked away after leo severed his head, it cheapened the moment. for me anyway. course, what can you expect? it's a kids show

odupianist 05-21-2008 05:22 PM

As soon as the exosuit stands up and gets its head, it was a BIG hint to the Utrom connection. I thought it was clever too. It made this series unique in that. The comics have the Shredder dead and appearing in only four issues, the old toon has him as a whiny human, a powerful Utrom was the only logical next step lol

Scandia 05-21-2008 05:31 PM

I had read about this ahead of time so I was prepared. At first I thought it was odd. But upon watching 2k3 I do realize it can be worked out quite well.

Original TMNT Cartoon Fan 05-22-2008 05:22 PM

I agree

I agree. Shredder shall be an ordinary human from planet Earth.

Drtooth 05-23-2008 09:11 AM

Personally, I find objection at this point to be pointless. In the grand scheme of things....

Shredder isn't a person. It's a title that gets passed down. hense why Karai is the Shredder now.

He was just posing as Saki/Shredder to gain his infamy and not having to establish his own evil rep.

As the Tribunal said, the events happened for a reason. Without him becoming Saki, he wouldn't have killed Yoshi, leaving the rat and the turtles to mutate in New York. All the while, the Utroms transporting him lead to the mutation of the turtles. Which as we all know, after all this time, they defeated the True Shredder.

I like how they planned this all out, long drawn plot line for the series.

And by the way, they DID bring Krang back. but as a brief cameo. And I think that cameo was well worth the joke.

Raphael_ 05-23-2008 11:35 AM

I didn't like it all, I preferred old Shredhead.

odupianist 05-23-2008 12:47 PM

I don't. He was too whiny to even think of fitting in to this series. DrTooth nailed it though. Shredder is a title. I do like how you said "not having to establish his own evil rep". Makes Ch'rell kind of a lazy punk
