When they're hurt or ill?

ok seeing as how the turtles are constantly fighting and risk life and limb on a daily basis I was wondering how the hell they can live their lives the way they do and not have any access to medical facilites or medical care. It'snot like they can go to the emergency room if one of them gets seriously injured. I know they all must know some practicle first aid stuff to treat minor scrapes and cuts and broken bones, but what if they ever get hurt enough where they need serious medical attention.

Like they get shot and it's not possible to just simply remove it, or they need surgery for some thing? I just find it astonishing that given the life style the turtles lead they actually have no real way of getting medical attention if they need it. I mean what do they do? It's not like they can get the utroms to come to them and fix them up everytime they get seriously hurt.

And what if something not related to injury happend to them, like they get seriously sick with an illness people normally need to be hospitalised for like dysentary or apendicitus or viral pnemonia (have no idea how to spell this). Hpw do you think they would handle stuff like this? What would they do It's bound to come up if it hasn't already before?

My guess? Medical Ninjutsu techniques. Not like Naruto or something, but in reality Ninja were on the move a lot. They knew how to make, amongst other important things, their own medicine. In the comic book world where Ninja are also superior martial artists (and not just spies who specialize in strategy and sabotage), Ninja probably also have ancient secrets as to how they can care for various types of wounds and injuries on the go.

Remember that episode of the old toon where all the Turtles had a cold or the flu, and April kept feeding them chicken soup?

TMNT injuries/sickness

Mirage:
"Turtle Dreams" by Steve Bissette in Turtle Soup (1987)
Michelangelo cracks his shell on a mission. Splinter is able to mend his wounds.

NT:
"The Shredder Strikes Part II"
Michelangelo sprains/breaks his ankle. Don puts it in a splint.

OT:
"Making of Metalhead"
All the Turtles have "Turtle Pox" and April feeds them chicken soup.

Now adays the Mirage Turtles can go to the Utrom medical facilities, or that superhero hospital Mike discovered.

I suppose in all the other universes they just have to man up and deal with it. "You got a sword shoved through your leg? Just deal with it."

Most likely, they picked up methods of treating their wounds from Splinter and stray books. I like Goonga's theory, too, that it was part of their training regimen as ninja.

hey you have a good point, what the hell do they do if they get a serious infliction or injury? And no matter how good you are at some "ninja" based medical techniques, that still doesn't help you get half the things that can befall some one. I mean just how effective are herbs and such when you have bleading ulcer? I mean what if one of them gets some that absoulutely needs surgery?

Like "testicular torsion"? Thats a painful and nasty thing that can happen to a guy and one of those things that needs like immediate attention as soon as it happens or the testicals and tissues die. :o And this is something that can actually happen to one of the turtles because Testicular torsion is pretty likely in adolecent males and in particular males who engage in strenuious physical activity. Gee that fits the turtles to a tee, I guess they're pretty much screwed. :ohwell:

Just who exactly plays "doctor" in these situation if it comes up? Splinter? Maybe Donny? I mean I guess Splinter is likely but I bet he knows nothing of surgery andeven though he's smart I don't see Don as much a surgion. :-?

Well, considering that Ninja lived in mountain villages that were worlds away from the medical treatments of the time and still got along just fine until their numbers were severely reduced and the few remaining Ninja scattered all over Japan in the Tensei Iga War. Considering their profession, I'm guessing they had ways of dealing with being impaled in the leg or whatever.

Then there's also the fact that I bet its hard for a Purple Dragon to stab a Ninja Turtle in the back with a 4-inch blade and actually kill the Turtle in the process.

Raphael VS the Volcano

I recall the episode "Raphael VS the Volcano" in the 1987 cartoon when Raphael thought he was so sick he would die.

Ooookay, :o I gues my question here is, just what the heck is "testicular torsion", and is it as bad as it sounds?

Ninja turtles + testicles = 10 ft. pole area.

Hell, screw the doctor's office. Next time I get some seriously bad affliction, I'm taking the next bus out. There must be some magic in the air up there.

Andrew NDB 10-25-2008 02:14 PM

I'm sure most of them have a basic field knowledge of medicine. Probably able to stitch each other up if need be, or heat up a blade with fire and cauterize wounds if need be.

Sage Ninja 10-28-2008 12:30 AM

you know I have no idea what happens when the turtles get seriously hurt or sick. It's just another thing about the isolation of their exsistance that poses as another fall ball back. And a serious one at that. I'm suprised this has not been played up more or addressed in show. They are warriors and probably sustain injury to varying degrees all the time. I know some of you have mentioned some magical ninjitsu medical techniques, but as marvalous as that may be the real issue is that simple modern medical treatments are barred from the turtles. If they get a life threatening disease or injury that can't be cured with herbs or pressure points, then they are pretty much screwed.

I guess there only recourse if one of them gets a life threatening injury or affliction is they will have to brave a trip to the surface and risk being exposed of captured by revealing them selves to a doctor to help them. I think in Bad Day when Splinter appeared to have a heart attack Leo stated they needed to get him to a doctor and they where trying to get out of the lair so they can do that. It looked like they had no other plan or means to treat Splinter so I think it's safe to guess they don't have any.

This boggles me has this medical issue ever been addressed before on what they do in situations like this in the mirage comics? And I mean the old comics before the justice league founded their own hospital.

Well they got splinter:ohwell:

Ryona 11-01-2008 09:29 AM

When one of them gets hurt, Master Splinter gives him a senzu bean and he's all better. I saw it in one of the old TMNT comics.

Outside of that, I'm sure that when one of them gets seriously injured, the rest of them pop in a video they recorded of one of those graphic real-life medical shows where you see docs doing open-heart surgery and stuff, and the TMNT wash their hands, keep an eye on the video, and wing it from there.

Leo - "Okay... I'm going in...

Don - "No, not there! The video says it has to be here!"

Leo - "Wait, what!?"

Raph - *groan*

Mikey - "Think he needs more pain killer? I'll get the Tylanol again..."

Raph - "Stop giving me regular strength! It does nothing!"

XERO 11-01-2008 03:24 PM

Well, there's always Vicodin.

Dr. House approves.:P

Ryona 11-01-2008 03:30 PM

Dr House annoys the royal f*** out of me because I've actually met douchebags like him. I know his type... The pompous prick who thinks he's been bestowed with omniscience and knows everything there is to know about everything. And that delusion of his makes him think he's better than everyone else in everyway. My perscription for that jackass is a dose of reality.
