Most Hilariously Out of Context TMNT Moments
There are always those jaw-dropping moments that require you too step back and say, "Could you put that in context for me?"
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ks/context.jpg Turns out TMNT is full of them as well. Post pictures from the comics, toon or movies, or just describe moments that when seen out of context, imply quite a different series of events. |
WTF!? Who are these two characters supposed to be?

The reality is, Renet just took her back in time and showed her her origin. The joke is, it looks like two really butch women just experimented in a car. |
LOL, I knew someone was going to complain about Jim Lawson's art as soon as that pic was posted.
I always wondered how non-TMNT fans view Jim Lawsons are in the comics? Funny stuff. |

Poor Jim Lawson . Always gets crap about his work.

He is capable of drawing good...why he is so half-assed now is beyond me. |
Well, hell, let's just talk about Lawson's art because we all want to anyway.
Lawson has never been my favorite artist. His current style is at least more unique than his older work, where it's purposefully abstract instead of having random panels where you think "why the hell does that look so square?" See any of his work in TMNT Advantures or late Mirage Vol 1 - Vol 2 era for those moments. The problem with his new style, for me anyway, is that I just don't think it's at home in what is ostensibly an action comic. It's also clear, though, that alot of his art doesn't have his all going into it, which is unfortunate but for some reason the man seems to be thrown every drawing task available when he should be, I don't know, drawing one thing and writing lots of other things because he's great at that. Actually, my ideal scenario with the book would be to have Laird do plot concepts and art, and have Lawson script. |
Not speaking for Jim personally, as I am certainly not qualified to, but it has been suggested to me as a general statement that some people "phone it in" when writing/drawing because Mirage, as a company, gives them no incentive to do any better. Writing/drawing is the only way to draw a paycheck (work for hire), so they do what they have to to pay all of the bills at home. And most all of them are struggling to do that as it is, while Peter and Gary sleep easy with all of that licensing money filling their pockets.

It's sad looking at his earliest work side-by-side with his newer stuff. The Tales Vol. 1 Treasury I got today is prime for that.

The frotispieces in the Tales Treasury are sharp and detailed, clear examples of his new style done right, and the Spinal Tapped story isn't done in his new style. It's intentionally more cartoony than usual for a humorous story. If anything, I'm the other way around. Some of his old work in that book looks wonky as hell (like, anything in the first two issues), and I'm left to wonder how he improved so much by the time he did Return to New York (which actually looks really good.) His new style has merit, and can look good. Unfortunatley, alot of the time it doesn't, because he's spread too thin, I suppose. |
This is the quickest I've seen a thread do a total 180 before...:P
Nice concept, Cipher. I must agree I don't care for Lawson's work. His issues of TMNTA are my least favorite (His and the Jagwar intro issue.) |
I feel kind of bad because I looked at this thread when it was started, laughed my ass off, and then didn't post. My scanner isn't functional right now so I don't know if I can add to it. But I will look through my comics and then mention what I find, in case someone else wants to post it.
Thanks for the laughs, Cipher. As for Lawson's art... blaaaaaaaaaaaargh I don't know what to do. It is weird that he draws things so square and blocky. Especially looking at his City at War stuff (I know it was a long time ago) ... that was relatively cartoony, but in perspective and understated as opposed to exagerrated. I do love his writing, though... I wish he'd come up with more stories. Can someone please explain to me why Eric Talbot does not draw a book? I suppose I could ask him ... |
Just think how much better Volume 4 and those Tales issues would look if either Michael Dooney or Dan Berger did the artwork. Granted Dan's work is a bit cartoony so he's better for the comedy issues, but Dooney is amazing.
I LOVE Dooney's artwork, I think its some of the best, and its a shame that he doesn't do the Vol. 4 and Tales art. |
I do like Lawson's stuff and I always have whether its been his old stuff or his new stuff. With all the different version of the Turtles out there, I've gotten used to there being varying art styles as well. However, I do like his old stuff a lot better.
On topic, I'll try to find something worthwile to post. |
Focus people! I'll have to start looking in my books and shows now, I'm sure there's lot of it to be posted.
