Was TMNT really only worth $60 million?

I haven't seen the actual price discussed in the other threads much.

Do you think the TMNT franchise was only worth $60 million? That seems a bit low to me, but then again maybe Pete thought it was simply good enough.

Cipher 10-23-2009 01:06 AM

I doubt if anyone here is even remotely qualified to answer this.

Kendamu 10-23-2009 01:09 AM

While we're not qualified to answer this, my speculation would be that TMNT would be worth more if it were more popular right now. It got sold at the beginning of a very slow point in their existence.

Wes 10-23-2009 01:15 AM

Yeah, I don't think he's asking for an excessively qualified opinion -- just people's thoughts on the subject.

For my part, there's not a whole lot I wouldn't sell for $60M... so it sounds good to me! But I agree with Goongasnootch. Given how nonexistent TMNT's presence has been this year -- especially considering that it's the 25th anniversary and all -- $60M is probably a good deal.

Spitfire 10-23-2009 01:32 AM

I'm not surprised it's worth that. I mean Marvel sold for what 4 Billion? Marvel is a massive universe encompassing thousands of characters so that kinda cash makes sense. Turtles is a lot smaller and when put in that perspective I can see it going for less then 100 million.

Ninjinister 10-23-2009 01:43 AM

If I owned the Turtles and they were at the popularity level they were at when this exchange took place, I would have sold 'em for Ten million. $60 mil' is a lot of money in retrospect, y'know, considering a bulk of this is likely going to one man.

One man who probably already has a hefty sum.

If this were the late 80s or early 90s, I'd say no, the Turtles are worth a LOT more than that. But it's 2009, and the TMNT aren't in the public eye the same as they were back then. I'd say $60 Million is actually pretty generous.

Candy Kappa 10-23-2009 05:32 AM

I think Laird got a good deal with 60 mill

Vivi 10-23-2009 06:19 AM

Even though i'm exceedingly underqualified to answer, I think mirage sold it for a song. But I'm biased. If Nick can tap into the potential of the tmnt, good for them, it was a solid investment.

tmntman 10-23-2009 01:23 PM

Actually, it seems that it was worth even less than that to Peter Laird. The actual price paid to Mirage is only $50 million. The other $10 million was paid to 4 Kids to buy out their contract.

My guess is that that isn't as much as he would like to have gotten. But at this moment, the license is only going to lose value unless Mirage was able to increase its visibility. So I can see why they would choose to sell out now rather than having to try to reboot the franchise yet again.

Scandia 10-23-2009 03:08 PM

I honestly think it was reasonable. Especially given the fact that the NT is over. And that the apogee was way back in the early 90s.

Even then, it's still a really good deal. Like I said, had this deal had happened in the late 80s/early 90s, I'd feel it was a total rip-off. But considering the current condition of the TMNT's popularity, Laird was lucky to get offered a deal like that at all.

Nope, TMNT is worth much more then that! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie grossed 200,000,000 worldwide, and TMNT (2007) grossed something between 90mil-100mil! In addition to that TMNT cartoon DVDs sell like crazy, comics are pretty popular, toys are one is the most popular, and in general TMNT simply appeals to kids! I think it's worth atleast 100mil

TMNTD 10-31-2009 04:08 PM

According to " The Unauthorized TMNT Trivia Book " ( I think that was the title), by Jeff Rovin back in the early 90's, it stated that the turtles were worth $365 million at the time ( this was back in 1990).

That's some drop.

Yeah, but we don't how much of that money went to Peter Laird/Mirage. I figure with the 2007 movie Laird made some concessions on how much money he got in order to get the movie made. The vast majority of the $90-100mil probably went to the studio(s).

Undoubtedly. Contrary to popular belief... it isn't free to make movies, print them, market them, and distribute them.

I have a feeling the 60 million deal, a large part of it was hinging on the fifth movie deal. Something tells me if that had fallen apart, so would the deal with Nick... or at least, have come down considerably in price.

About half of the worldwide box office goes to the theaters, while 4Kids, Warner Bros, TWC, Imagi, and Mirage take whats left.

Although 60 million is a nice bargain for a franchise thats generated 6 billion over its lifespan.
