The Mirage Universe Leftovers
Alright, so the intellectual rights to the TMNT are 100% Viacom.
How about the leftovers? What about Fugitoid? Seems like he might still be Peter Laird's property since he got his start in his own book. The rest of these are owned by their creators as I understand it: Usagi Yojimbo-Stan Saki Gizmo- Michael Dooney Wild West C.O.W.boys of Moo Mesa- Ryan Brown Jagwar-Steve Murphy? Ray Filet-Ryan Brown? Mondo Gecko-Ryan Brown? Wingnut & Screwloose-? Leatherhead-Ryan Brown? Gutwallow-Dan Berger Has anyone thought through the possibility that we will never see another Usagi/TMNT crossover in any medium? Or even Fugitoid? |
I've actually been wondering about where Fugitoid, the Triceratons, and Federats are going to end up, for a while now.
|
Apart from Usagi, Gizmo, and Gutwallow, I woldn't worry about any of these characters being banned from future appearences. I'm pretty sure Leatherhead was part and parcel of the TMNT, but even if Ryan Brown does own him, what possible reason would he have for saying "No, you can't use him"?
And while Laird may own Fugitoid (again, I'm not sure at all on that), why wouldn't he allow him to be used in a show? He already has leeway to write all the comics he wants, so it's not like he has to reserve the character for his own use. |
These characters were 100% owned by Mirage:

Do you guys read the replies on Pete's blog? Someone asked him in one of his older posts who Fuigitoid belongs too, Peter said its character is too associated with Turtles and that Viacom owns it as well.
So Fugitoid is officially a TMNT character. |
I'm assuming this goes for Ninjara as well?
Though...I know that she did show up in Non-TMNT places as well, specifically individual stories of her own. Gah, must find the link to those... |

I always figured Chris Allan owned her because of her appearances in that book, but I guess he could've just been using her under Mirage's approval. |
what about 2K3 characters and ones from the movie?

On a related note, Tatsu, Keno, Prof. Jordan Perry and Chief Sterns are (or at least were) owned by Northshore Investments Ltd/Golden Harvest/some company that has the word "star" in it. I wonder how they were able to use Tatsu in the Hyperstone Heist game. Funny how Charles Pennington was conviently somehow not owned by Northshore:).
Rick Arthur owns Lucindra. Does anyone know anything about this guy, though? I don't aside from him doing V.1 #44 and a story in one of the Turtle Soup anthologies. |

Funny that some of the Archie characters were said to be copyrighted by their respective creators, at least in the Mirage minicomics. I think they were part of the Mirage sale, considering that the Mirage minicomics mixed in a few Ninja Turtles-related stories with some creator-owned properties like Michael Dooney's Gizmo.

It turns that Paul Castiglia stills owns Headrush, who recently appeared in War of the Independents #4.
Steve Sullivan told me that he and Brian Thomas still own the characters they created for TMNT Adventures. Bob Fingerman isn't sure who owns his TMNT creations. |

I'm sure L. Head and M. Gecko, along with Fugi and the Triceratons (not sure about Blanque), are very much part of Turtles lore copyright-wise. On the other hand, Bloodsucker, Konami's chars except maybe Tora and Shogun, Tatsu and the like, and many scattered Archie, Mirage, and Image characters remain creator owned. Not to mention all the Division/Fleetway characters that may be lost forever.
Special case for Pteranno-Man, Bog: Swamp Demon, Conservation Corps, and the AtB cast and setting, as they became their own things apart from Turtles. While Ninjara was returned to the TMNT label (though Laird may have kept her), the rest remain away from TMNT, likely permanently. |
This topic is like 7 years old so most of this has already been answered....
