Gizmo and the Fugitoid-- canon?
 

I've been re-reading my comics like mad lately (I've just about finished organizing them, thank God) and came across Gizmo and the Fugitoid parts 1 and 2. Does anyone know if Peter considers these books canon? If so, where/how do they fit into the Mirage timeline? That was unclear to me. At one point they seemed as if they could have taken place in an alternate universe where Honeycutt never met the TMNT. But he still knows the utroms.

All and all, the books aren't that bad for spin-off material. I hope to draw Gizmo and Fluffy dressed as Elite Foot at some point.

I took it Gizmo was either set farther into the future or in a different part of the universe. Being a robot, Honeycutt is essentially immortal, so who knows how long it's been since he bumped into the Turtles. Again, it's been a while since I've read the books I have so I don't recall if Gizmo ever came to Earth.

I think its canon.

Your wording here is confusing. Do you mean that the two-parter is intended to EXPLAIN why the Triceratons and Federation gave up on their shared mission?

Been meaning to try this one day. Maybe I'll order it from Mirage sometime soon.

I like to consider it Canon, as I do with most of issues from the 'old guard' mirage writers (Eastman, Laird, Dooney, Lawson, Berger, etc.) Plus, I think Gizmo was featured in ONE panel of Tales v2, showing some past acquaintances of the TMNT, making it more canonically credible. [Anyone know what issue that was?]

I like to place the two issues after TMNT v1 #7, when the space story is concluded. I assume Fugitoid cohabits with the Utroms for a few days or weeks when he goes back to their planet on the transmat, before being wrapped up in a new adventure with Gizmo.

In the continuity thread, DrSpengler places it in the future, mainly because in the epilogue it shows a planet where aliens and humans live together. However, it's never explicitly stated that this is Earth, and sense I'm guessing Laird didn't come up with the idea for aliens living amongst earthlings until well after this crossover was published, Dooney likely didn't intend for this planet to be Earth either.

I also like the way it matches the immediacy of the Triceratons pursuit to capture the fugitoid better when placed in the timeline closer to the events of issue 7.

That was "Credo" from Tales #33. The inclusion of Gizmo definately indicates canonicity, though we've yet to see an actual TMNT/Gizmo crossover.

That's where I originally placed it, too. It seems to take place quite a while after #7 (and by extension, "Terror by Transmat"), as Honeycutt had been well established on the Utrom homeworld before getting lost for a very long time. When the Utroms relocate him, they welcome him back to their planet, so he'd have to have already been there for a while before getting lost for an undetermined stretch of time.

It never states that its Earth, but the art readily implies it by showing a very New York-ish street corner and shops with English writing on the buildings and an Earthly comic shop.

Part of my moving it, though, was that after reading the rest of the Gizmo series again, I realized that Gizmo takes place in the future so I sort of had to move the Fugitoid crossover to accomodate that fact.

Earthlings and aliens are shown having integrated amongst one another in the future of the Gizmo series, and although it's as you say just a coincidence with TMNT Vol. 4, it certainly fits. So the alien-inhabited New York of Gizmo compliments the alien-inhabited New York of Vol. 4 fairly well.

That is a good point and why I initially place the story there. But then again, knowing the tenacity of the Triceratons, it's not to far a stretch to imagine that decades or centuries later, they'd still have a warrant out for the Fugitoid so they can get their hands on the Transmat.
