What is Leonardo good for?

How would the Turtles do without Big Brother Leonardo? Who would be the leader? Who would be Splinter's favorite? Is he replaceable? Would anyone else have been able to take on the Shredder? Or is there something unique about him that no other Turtle would be able to do?

No. Raphael was nearly killed by the Shredder Elite on the way to fight Saki in #21 and without Leonardo the battle would have been lost for certain.

I agree. As soon as I read that, I instantaneously had a feeling of depression! (weird...) No one could ever replace Leonardo. He is THE ULTIMATE ninja turtle (in my opinion)! 'nough said.

Spacebabie 03-29-2010 10:29 PM

Even in the old toon they showed that the turtles couldn't function without Leo.

rav4ge 03-29-2010 10:39 PM

Without him, TMNT would probably become like Seinfeld with turtles... though with way more swearing and arguing.

Koi 03-29-2010 11:00 PM

Yes, I personally believe he is. The creators could have not had him at all. They could of just used the other three turtles and gone different routes to avoid use or his input in the comics/shows. He is replaceable, he is very bland and a very dull character in my point of view.

Their is really no traits that make him a detailed character with enough traits to be irreplaceable. If a character could not hold up their own comic franchise by them self, I find them worth just as much as the traits put into them.

But that is just my view of the character, I just have never found him as a remember-able character, or even halfway decently made for that matter.

Gotta disagree with you there only because when I was little he was the first 'hero' I ever saw it really stuck with me. The only one calm in the struggle, leading everyone, knowing whats right, etcetc. Maybe it can be generic but when yer a little boy you need that to look up to. Asking if Leo is necessary is like asking the same of Splinter. Basically, given the exception of age, they're one in the same. Leo took splinters role when splinter wasn't around (and also in death I assume though I havent read much of vol.4). Hes the missing peice in the emotional rainbow. Mikey looks at things through the scope of innocence, putting humor into it, Raphael through anger, Don through science, & Leo through logic & spirituality. Though this isn't the exact case in every form of TMNT, its true in practically everything outside of the mirage/image comics... Even then there are examples though, it depends on the writer.

I've never really liked Leo-esque characters. The boy-scouts with the daddy-issues. Just...couldn't really get my head around the idea of them.

Then I saw the 2007 movie and it all became clear to me. Oh yeah, there's no question that the movie was flawed and had plot holes big enough for air craft carriers to sail through, but...wow did the voice actor for Leo really just sell that character.

The sulky, broody, I-bust-my-ass-daily-to-be-the-best-and-this-is-the-thanks-I-get! Leo just made sense after that.

Having said that, I'll now return to having "War" stuck in my head.
Good god, ya'll.

In that sense he is replaceable with Splinter. Plus, they are identical, same personalities. How redundant, just makes me get annoyed at the lack of effort put into Leo.

Leo reminds me of the archetype character of really early cartoon heroes and comic heroes, just there to entertain people, with the personality traits of a cardboard box.

That description you just said Plastroncafe, reminds me of a kid I came across today in a grocery store.

Lemme guess, he was redundant, replaceable, and made of card board?

I saw a build board that was redundant, replaceable, and made of card board. Does that count?

Vivi 03-30-2010 02:07 AM

What good is an orchestra without a conductor?
A car without a driver?
A body without a head? (TMNT reference for the count ;))

Even though his character may seem unrelatable, Leonardo makes sure as a fighting team that they work well. And to answer the other thread, Michelangelo makes sure as brothers that they work well.

And totally agree with Plastroncafe about the movie VA. Although, 2K3 had his moments, especially Ultimate Ninja episode. I think I liked him a whole lot more after that.

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY.

*Groans*

DonatelloDomeHead31 03-30-2010 04:59 PM

Leonardo is the best. Look at him in the "Return of the Shredder." He tells Michaelangelo what toppings he's had on his pizza last time--he tells Michaelangelo that it's time for new toppings.

That's telling him Leo!

And also, Leo does have some comic humor in him. You have to laugh at the leader's jokes

Exactly, Leonardo is the best ends the thread. No more comment :D

But I wonder if someone will post another thread that starts asking what Donatello is good for or Raphael or maybe go further to April or Splinter.

Oh well.

Powder 03-30-2010 11:44 PM

Noo they better not!
