A lot of hero and superhero stories of the 1970's and 80's.

Don't forget the craptastic tv shows they were constantly watching.

John Pannozzi 04-05-2010 05:16 PM

Cerebus by Dave Sim was also a huge influence.

Go to the East warehouse over on Lairdman island. You'll find your answers there.

This funny thing is that when I was younger I got out a map of NYC and remember looking for that darn island...

you can totally see the frank miller influence through most of their run together on the book. And jack kirby pretty much influenced everyone & their mother.

Honestly? I can't see Laird toking up. I just...can't. He doesn't seem the type. Eastman? Sure. The rest of the Mirage Crew...why not. But not Laird. Can't explain it....he's too much of a "Dad".

Star Trek = This is where all of PL's sci-fi stuff came from. He was a huge Star Trek fan and still is. The Triceratons are based on the Klingons.

X-men = Raphael was based on Wolverine.

Any sources or you just pulling that from where you pull most things?

Yep, Miller's Ronin and Daredevil were some of the driving influences.
And Kirby's art inspires everyone. This dude mastered the splash page

The Star Trek stuff? PL is a massive Trekkie that's been obvious for years now.

If you mean the Triceratons I believe he answered that in a Ask PL blog around a year ago or some time, they were loosely inspired by the Klingons as well as his love for Triceratops dinosaurs.

I didn't quote the Star Trek bit, because I'm sure that much is true...Laird loves him some OS Star Trek.
As for the Klingon bit:

add to that, as someone said, the Triceratons were created with the Fugitoid, not the turtles, and thus they are from even as far back as 1983.

Kirby's footprint a la New Gods is all over the sci-fi aspects of Turtles, as far back as Laird's machine designs and the wacked-out, high-level concepts of the D'Hoonib arc.
