Would Anyone Be Interested in This?
For those of you that are into the more serious TMNT interpretations, since as it stands there are no real plans for a new movie, and even if there were there is no gurantee we won't get another "Lost in Time" camp-fest, would you be interested in a serious noveliation of the TMNT?
I'm talking good writing here, with well-rounded characters and a well paced plot. It would be a thick book aimed at the late-teen/ early twenties crowd (read: hardcore comic book/anime/sci-fi geeks) , not some Junior novelization. It would probably either play up the Sci-Fi aspect of the Turtles or make it a True Crime type story, dealing with the harsh realities of urban dissonance. Something like the first movie; it would be ironically funny at times, but primarily it would carry emotional ressonance. It would be a story of value... "a ludicrous concept, played completely straight." Some good writers for the project? Dean Koontz comes quickly to mind. I mean really, is there anyone else? Maybe Michael Crichton, or Philip Jose Farmer (but he's so old by now I don't know if he could write anything on a steady basis). Chris Claremont wrote the X2 novelization, and is familiar (to understate to the extreme) with comics, so he's also a possibility. You could get a good ( NON-ANIME) artist to paint a cover. Another cool idea would be a high-production value Audio Book. You could get a voice actor from the Movies/ Cartoons to perform it, and then get a new musical score (or music from the first movie) to go with it. I think that this (done correctly) would be a great way to re-introduce the Turtles as mature, 3-dimensional characters that just happen to be trapped in a wacked out concept, without resorting to a $100 million+ budget. If we do get another movie, who knows to what depths it could fall... |
Hmmm...
Interesting. |
The current fanfic idea I have right now (which I STILL haven't started yet) might fit this bill very well ;)
|
hmmm
Sounds interesting.
Laird talked about being interested in something like that in the letter column in issue 9 (released yesterday). He said he was thinking about writing one himself. |
I know there have been some good (and I mean really good) fan fiction "novels" done, but I do think a published novel would be great.
|
If it has to do with the TMNT, we're interested. I myself think it's a good idea.
|
Yeah it might work. Laird can write comics very good, a novel is a diffrent thing. I think he should write the story, and hire a real novelist.

Anne Rice would also be an interesting autor. That would never happen though. |
Anne Rice? Maybe if they were the Teenage Mutant Vampire Turtles. ( I know like 30 people just opened up their Word Processors, but honestly folks, the world has enough s----- TMNT fanfics without it having to worry about some lonely teenagers machinations of Undead Mutant Pets. )
She's great in her own genre, but I think it would be too much of a stretch for her. I still think Dean Koontz would be the best pick for this; just read The Watchers (it's about a genetically altered dog named Einstein who is on the run from the government and a less favorably bio-engineered monstrosity known as The Outsider) and you will know what I am talking about. And I feel kind of stupid for not picking up on this before, but Peter David is a decent novelist as well as comic book author, and he's definitely familiar with the TMNT universe as he's writing the new ongoing. Probably too busy though... |
I don't think I'd have the patience to sit there and read a book about the Turtles.
|
i know, i cant even read those little chapter books based on the movies
|
How sad.
|
yes it is rather sad, but some how i can ead comics, maybe cuz they have pictures :D
|
Now a nice long novel I wouldn't mind, especially for the older crowd.... A few volumes perhaps? :)
|
i think the novelizations aimed towards kids are pretty much crap, but if a novel came out that was quality writing, which was able to take the subject seriously and in a more adult context without making it stupid, or turning donatello into a cyborg, i'd definitely read it. i mean, the tmnt were originally intended for a teenage/young adult audience, and there have been some dark things in the comic. i think a novelization would introduce the whole thing to a different level, and perhaps its reputation would be of a better quality.

Hey in Japan they made a very succesful novelization of Gundam Wing. If it works for GW in Japan, it could work for TMNT in the U.S.A.! :D
A TMNT radio drama would rock too! |
I am sure if you were a kid you wouldn't find them crap tinselcat, I feel that they should have a wide-range audience, that makes it's popularity benefit the most in the end...
