A thing about turtles
As much as we love TMNT and admire those mutant turtles kick some bad guys booty and being able to take care of themselves, it is sadly not the case with captive (or pet if you prefer) turtles and tortoises!
The captive breed mostly rely on their owners to care for them, provide good food and environment so they can grow and prosper. Of course, without the proper care, it can lead to such disastrous result. Spoiler:
For those who wishes to get a pet turtle or tortoise in the near future, please, I am BEGGING you to do some internet research on basic care, depending on the specie of turtle you desire to adopt or purchase. That picture really made me cry... literally. |
Yes it is very sad you really need to research when it comes to looking after those types of animals any animal really.
|
Also on another note, most of the wild turtle's habitat are being destroyed by us for our own greedy need to build. I feel nauseous, just talking about it. :tcry:
|
Maybe I'm a pussy, but a warning in the title would've been great. I don't like seeing that kinda stuff.

Edit: Made the photo a spoiler. I'm really sorry. |
All reptiles need special care in captivity. Unless you really really know what you're doing, stick with a dog or cat. Or better yet nothing at all.
Metobolic bone disease....vitamin and mineral deficiencies....lack of proper lighting and heat....not to mention all the bad bugs you can catch if you don't keep them clean. Yeah. Just skip owning reptiles all together unless you are well educated. |
all pets need proper care and to do that you gotta research. Today it's not hard finding info, tips and help how to care for reptile or other "alien" pet species.
There's lots of websites, forums and youtube people that share. And there's books to help out as well. And with that there's also some good old fashioned common sense. |

I've seen Youtube videos and most of them give misleading/false/incorrect information because they are made by people (mostly kids/teenagers and even some adults)who actually didn't research properly and think that their setup/caring method is "okay" when it's not. I don't blame the majority though. Some have really good intentions and probably got bad information, mostly from the pet store employee or a proclaimed "reptile specialist". Edit: I forgot to add, I hope this kind of thread won't raise some kind of flame war. Information on animal care (no matter the specie) can vary from one source to another (which is why I believe sometimes it is hard to find accurate info online or in books for that matter) and can become debatable. People will agree and disagree, which is why I want this topic to remain civilized and enjoyable. Since this is a TMNT forum, I do believe there are some members on here that like the actual animal and who knows, may one day get one in their own home! :tlol: Yes, I may be a TMNT fan but I am also a big turtle lover and I think they deserve more respect. Turtle rules! |
The misinformatioln is why I strongly believe that no reptile should be kept in captivity. There's surviving and there's thriving. 95% of "pet" reptiles are surviving in captivity, meaning they are living despite the care the receive. They are malnourished, suffering from a host of problems related to the diet the receive and the lack of exposure to the proper level of UV light. They live for a few years then die when they can't hold on any longer. The owner chalks it up to a naturally short life and happily goes out to get something else.
I spent many years rescuing and rehabing reptiles who had been in the care of idiots who destroyed them. I can't tell you how many leopard geckos and bearded dragons and iguanas and chameleons and water dragons and uromastyx and you name it that came to me skinny (or grossly overweight) calcium deficient and sitting in a tank with no light or heat. People Should Not own reptiles (or any other exotics) unless they absolutely 100% without a doubt (and this does not mean internet research or relying on the guy at PetSmart) know what they are doing with the species they have. |
my 2 female red eared sliders, came to me overweight and soft shelled. The previous owner had fed just beef. didn't take long until they looked a lot better with some proper diet

It's uncanny how I now see this thread, and I watched a Captain Planet rerun on Boomerang about this kind of thing this morning.

As for the thread, it's just a message for people that ever plans on getting a pet turtle in the future. Sometimes, people tends to buy a pet without knowing what kind of responsibilities that comes with it. Like they say on G.I.Joe "Knowing is half the battle!" By the way, love your name, Storm Eagle is one of my favorite Maverick. :tgrin: |
Boomerang is a retro cartoon TV channel operated by Turner Broadcasting. They show old Hanna-Barbera cartoons, as well as stuff from the 80s and 90s like Dexter's Lab and Johnny Bravo.
As for that picture, it's truly disgusting someone could do that to an innocent animal. |
