The "third toe" debate.
I was reading the thread from the Licensing expo and couldn't make it through thr first page because of the complaints about the third toe.
Here's the thing: The third toe has always been there. Look at this picture from issue 1, volume 1 of the Mirage series: http://i780.photobucket.com/albums/y...e/186f7c7d.png See that thing that I circled? That's a toe. But it's on the back of his foot. So his foot has three toes, just like his hand has three fingers. So the new guys moved it to the front which makes sense because their thumb isn't pointing out the back of their palm. Essentially, the new guys are fixing a mistake. And at this point, it's their prerogative to do so. Because they own it. And does a third toe take away from the concept at all? Last time I checked, no. My point, basically, is shut up. Be happy your beloved Turtles are getting another cartoon. If you're thatpissed about the third toe, don't watch it. And if you're that pissed about a third toe... You should really do some self reflection and get your sh** in check. It's a cartoon. |
It seems to me that you're more upset at the people you're complaining about than anyone else is about the third toe.
Yes, there has always been a "third toe," which has always been in the position of an exaggerated heel. My beef with it is that considering how right they got everything else in the designs, IMO, throwing in the third toe up front is an unnecessary break of form. No, the change doesn't stand out much in the CGI designs that Nickelodeon has released, but it DOES stand out in the action figures. And the action figures are another example of perfection with the unnecessary flaw of having the third toe there. And I will not stop voicing my opinion to placate you or anyone else. Really, I don't know why you had to throw the attitude into your post because this could have otherwise been a civil and healthy discussion. |
And yet you felt the need to make a whole thread telling people to just relax. Is that really necessary? I agree that it's really not a big deal...one way or another. I mean, how often in the show are we gonna see the feet? The action figures may look odd.
People are gonna gripe. It's what they do on a forum. Until something new surfaces, the 3rd toe is just the latest gripe. First it was the "mummy wraps." The "third toe' of yore is more of a heel, and it was never used as a "thumb". I don't remember the Turtles gripping anything with their feet. To say they've always had 3 toes seems almost an argument in semantics. If it wasn't called one in the "How to Draw the Turtles" book, would people really call that heel a toe? |
I'm on a horse.
Okay that's not all, think the only gripe I have with the new designs are the feet, but not cause it's a third toe there (or a relocated "toe". it's a shame we didn't see the heel gripping action in... action) The overall look on the circular feet looks kinda unfinished. |
If you'd made it through the first page you'd see we're well aware the third toe has been there (but most of us prefer to think of it as the heel).

Post what you want, jay but just know that if you cannot stand reading what other people have to say, you probably shouldn't be on an online fan board. |

And no one has answered the real question: does it alter the concept of TMNT at all? NO. So, shut up. Like I said, you're getting a new TMNT cartoon. Isn't that enough? Isn't that what is important? If the property were still in Laird's hands the chances of us getting a new toon at all would be slight, at best. My problem, at the end of the day, is with fandom in general. People do not like change. And so they bitch and moan endlessly about stupid things and finding any real information amongst the noise is impossible. Am I on a soapbox? Sure. Does that make me as bad as everyone else? Probably. |

When I said it was a mistake, I didn't mean literally. Meant that maybe the design team saw it that way and "fixed" it. |
I agree with you, jay. I'll admit the extra toe is kind of a weird thing to see, and it kinda makes their feet look like cow hoofs, but I'm not going to piss and moan about it.
|
Like I said, I don't disagree that the 3rd toe is an inconsequential change (after 25+ years, it seems like an odd choice though.) but the tone you're using isn't going to make anyone stop griping...it's only going to make it worse.

For the record, I don't care either way about the feet. But it's a personal preference. There is nothing factual about it being better or worse and telling people to shut up is ineffective. Thing is, I agree with you that the toe is small beans. But perhaps you need to take your own advice in this case |
Your opening post TL;DR
You are whining post after post about us whining post after post. You can't please everyone. Did you really think a thread telling us to deal with it will make us happy? |

I know Pete has commented on the cover art for IDW's TMNT 1, has anyone sent him the promo art for the Nick series and asked his opinion?
|
jaybeane, if you're upset that people are complaining about the third toe, that's fine, but there's no need to tell anyone to shut up or to be so condescending. I'm going to lock this thread because it clearly got off on the wrong... foot. :P
