The most used piece of art in TMNT products.

Thinking back at most of my old TMNT T-shirts, one image seems to be used again and again. In fact right now I have 2 TMNT shirts with this piece of art on it. I wonder who drew it, and I wonder if (s)he gets royalties.

Most vintage art, including this one, was drawn/inked by Steve Lavigne and Ryan Brown. And of course they don't get royalties. They used to at one time, but not at all since Mirage switched to the "work for hire" standard.

However, a lot of the stuff coming out today is a mesh of vintage art with new heads photoshopped on them. I have no clue why, because it looks horrible. I can get an example... BRB.

Back. Here's a picture a friend texted to me earlier this week, of a shirt she found at JC Penny. The angle is funny, but you can see that there are different heads.

Oh...my wallet is totally the faux-vintage. And I loath it.

I refuse to buy anything that isn't 100% vintage.

I was trying to replace my older TMNT wallet, the black leather with the embossed turtle shell and the metal manhole cover/TMNT logo on the front, but it'd had been discontinued...so I got this thing, mostly out of necessity.

When I lost my 2K3 TMNT wallet, it probably took me 3 months or more to find something that I didn't hate, and that ended up being a Domo wallet.

As a kid I constantly saw this one http://i.imgur.com/JH4Mc.jpg, IMO its the most used TMNT pictures. I know its the cover of a Mirage comic and I don't mean that the NES Box art is the most used but its the only way I could quickly find the picture, but yeah I constantly saw the cover of that comic in many magazines and whatnot. In fact as a kid I had a poster of it among other mirage covers. As a kid I thought that the reason they all had red bandannas was because of the lighting, kind of a complex thought for a 6/7 year old. I also thought the light thingy thing in that picture was the eyeball of the Technodrome.

Yeah, I often wondered why the Turtles all wore red when I saw it as a youngin. I've always liked that pic. I mean, it is Mike Dooney, after all. :D

Fun fact about that one (the NES/#4cover), it can be seen as a poster in the room of son DJ, on the sitcom Roseanne.
Though I think the masks are color "corrected".

Anyone have Roseanne on DVD? We need pictures!

I feel that first piece of art is probably the most used ever, but now it seems like any of the 25th anniversary art by Brown and Lavigne is, which is IMO, not as good as it originally was.

None of the new art done for the 25th anniversary was done by Lavigne/Brown. It was done by in-house artists at 4Kids. And, IMHO, it sucks.

Slap-Happy 08-13-2011 10:35 PM

Really? I just thought they'd failed at recreating that style.

Just reinforces my distaste for anything 4Kids.

I think you have to consider this particular pose:

There were so many variations on it, originating as an Eastman/Laird Raphael action shot in TMNT Volume 1, #2.

Nah, the real reason everybody was wearing red was because that game would teach many young gamers the pain of suffering and death... muhahaha!
