What is your LEAST favorite comic art/story from TMNT volume ONE?

Throughout the years of being a TMNT comic fan I have gone/read through my collection many times. The funny thing is (and I'd like to know if anyone else does this) I always seem to cast judgment over each issue as I pull it from my box to read. It's weird, I enjoy all 62 issues for their own reasons, but there are some that I just have some kind of a gripe with or I feel that they don’t fit in with the regular series.

With that said, my question is...

What is your LEAST favorite comic art/story from TMNT volume ONE?

Personally my least favorite art/story is issue 38-40. While I really like hedden/mcweeney's art and stories, i dont really consider issues 38-40 as volume one...i tend to think of them as three Archie books that somehow got slipped into the regular series. I feel that they are the least fitting of the 62 original books.

A close second would be issue 30, "sky highway" by Rick Veitch. I really like Veitch's work as well, especially the "River" series (one of my favorite tmnt stories), but I just couldn’t get passed the silliness of the mutato-heads.

I really liked Sky Highway myself. I think my least favorite issue was Matt Howarth's "Turtle Dreams" in issue #41.

Both of you have pretty much hit the nail on the head for the stinkers. Though I don't think "Sky Highway" was that bad, just forgettable.

I agree with this topic.

ToTheNines 12-28-2011 01:29 PM

I could at least laugh at the Howarth issue. The Hedden and McWeeney stuff was just ****ing moronic.

Andrew NDB 12-28-2011 01:32 PM

I wouldn't be mortified if Mark Martin's #16, #22, and #23 trilogy were never spoken of or mentioned ever again, either.

I feel bad for A.C. Farley when I look at the beautiful painted cover he did for Collected Book 5 for those issues... what a waste.

He got paid. I'm sure he didn't mind all that much.

CyberCubed 12-28-2011 01:57 PM

Most of the Vol 1 silly guest issues were the worst. Luckily their silliness renders them non canon so I just view them as a parody rather than a real story.

Sky Highway was great. The Turtles traveling to another dimension of guys who get turned to freaks and ride forever.

I liked to think that the guy from Tales of the TMNT #15 came from the same place too:

These are my least favorite. I just never got into them. They're just random for the sake of being random. I actually suffered through reading them and never wanted to again so that says something.

But who doesn't love self-awareness like this?

The more I read the Mark Martin stuff, the more I am actually able to follow the plot and appreciate it for what it is. It's pretty trippy, but I actually find it a rewarding mental challenge to get through. And all those artistic and literary easter eggs are a real treat to find!

Dude, we are so on the same wavelength on this one! When I first saw that cover, I actually thought that issue of Tales was gonna be a sequel to Sky Highway.

Yes, these 2 are the worst, especially the latter, TMNT turning into talking dishwashers or something like that... What were they thinking/smoking?

Abnormal Freak 12-28-2011 04:21 PM

Can't believe the Mark Martin and "Sky Highway" hate in here. :( ADORED those issues; some of my favorites. It's funny that Modeen would call "Sky Highway" rather forgettable, because I think it's one of the most memorable, and images from the issue usually crop up when I think about Volume One overall.

The only issues I didn't dig were the Hedden-McWeeney ones. Their first issue was bad enough with lame jokes and bad art, but the three-parter they did had the worst jokes and art. These are the only Vol. 1 issues I wish never existed.

I love everything else save for #44, which I thought was an all right issue with a pretty cool story and art, but it's not amazing. Though I suppose I wouldn't call Howarth's issue amazing either, but I still love it—just kind of a fun, quirky issue.

#44 was a bit odd. What was the idea behind that black Lucindra character who Raphael was training with?

What I did like is the Foot Soldiers appeared in it, as it seemed like a preview to #45 and City at War for their full return.

MrPliggins 12-28-2011 09:20 PM

#16 holds a special place for me as it was the very first Mirage TMNT book I ever got, and I read the hell out of it. So I can't hate on it. I would have to go with the Hedden & McWeeny issues too. Didn't those guys write/draw a TMNT Adventures annual also, or am I remembering wrong?

azrael 12-28-2011 09:30 PM

Hedden/McWeeny issues

Sounds like a bad McDonald's flick.... Ronald and the Hidden McWeinie.

What do you mean? She was another buddy (like Casey, kind of) he does a bit of sparring with at times.

There was a prequel to that story in Turtle Soup as well that sets up her character.

Yeah, but that's all we see of her. She only appears in those two stories and is never shown again.

And it seems off to me that Raphael would suddenly find a training partner in a random human female who had no ties to anything else. Almost smacked of just being there for ethnic diversity or whatever.

toitle anxiety didnt bother me too much. yes the story was silly, but comical and the art (in this particular issue only) i thought was excellent. it is a very unique style, but not to the silly side such as the later three issues. in fact, the style of the turtles in toitle anxiety is actually one of my favorites. splinter was pretty cool too, more rodent looking than most other renditions. i own some of the work from the toitle anxiety issue, as well as work from various other vol 1 artist and the level of detail, clean strokes, shading, and fine tuned lines is some of the best.

yeah, i though howarth's issue was funny. it was very different, but in a good way i thought. the characters stories kinda reminded me of the OT for some reason.

i liked this issue. it had a lot of 90's influence in it. the particular slang, the africa medalian (lots of kids in my school wore them at the time) lucindra wore. lol, rick arthur even drew a character in the book wearing a triple fat goose! those jackets were insanly popular and expensive. i also really liked how it ended whith the whole big battle with the foot and his brothers coming to thier rescue.
