Leonardo #1 Microseries Prep Work
Checking out Ross Campbell's deviantART today, I stumbled upon some of his prep work and sketches he's done to get ready for his interior work for Leonardo #1. Not too much to see here, but his overall TMNT art is always amazing and gives you a decent idea, I would think, on how this issue is going to look. With David Peterson's covers and Campbell doing the interiors, this is easily my most anticipated issue of this series so far!
P.S. With all due respect to Franco Urru, I am also enjoying Ross' take on Alopex much more. Here's hoping he becomes a TMNT series regular one day! http://mooncalfe.deviantart.com/gallery/24484975 |
Thanks for sharing, dude! Looks like Apolex turns up beyond the Raph mini already!

Makes me wonder if the IDW Leonardo one will have a big Foot fight like the Mirage original.

I absolutely love this art! Next time TMNT needs a guest artist (beyond the Micros), this is the way IDW should go! No questions asked!

Ross is my favorite TMNT artist and I can say (for a fact) he's extremely excited to be doing a full Turtles book. I'd have him draw the on-going if it was up to me. Best Turtles artist around, in my opinion.

thanks, everyone!! :) much appreciated.
to clarify, just the 4 Leo drawings in the top row of that gallery were prep work for the one-shot issue, everything else is either drawings just for fun or stuff i did for Mirage back in 2007 or so (the Raphael covers and Donatello frontispieces). anyway, i'm totally pumped to do this!! i've had a few close brushes with TMNT over the years, including being the artist on an ongoing comic for another publisher before it fell through and IDW got the license instead (i was so bitter when i lost that job, heh), so this Leonardo issue has been a long time coming for me and a dream come true. :tgrin: i really hope you guys like the issue! |
I am excited to read the final pproduct then....with so much ups and dons on the way to get there it should feel pretty neat for you to be finally doing this huh?;)here is one excitedly waiting for april....(Im talking about myself to make it clear..)

Love your TMNT art, Ross! I would rather see you on the main book instead of Dan Duncan. Duncan's art ain't bad, but I find your's more pleasing to the eyes.

IDW TMNT TPB vol. 1 will collect the Ongoing Issues #1-4 http://www.amazon.com/Teenage-Mutant...6808304&sr=1-3 Then they will have a trade collecting the 4 Micro Series issues so Raph, Mikey, Don, and Leo. And the next TPB collecting the Ongoing will contain issues #5-8. That art looks amazing, can't wait for the Leo issue. Thanks for sharing!!! |

Quick question: Regarding the series you were supposed to draw, were you set to write too or just draw it? (Are you restricted from mentioning which publisher it was?) Anyway, we know you're going to blow this issue out of the water, so when it comes out, hopefully that will be evidence enough of why IDW needs to bring you back to draw as much as possible! P.S. That Leo Sketch #1 is now my new iPhone wallpaper! |

i try to refrain from talking about it but it's easily obtained information at this point so i'll just tell you, the other publisher was Dark Horse. it was accidentally made public knowledge last year and it was kind of a mess. you can probably still find the articles on ComicsAlliance and CBR about it but they're full of wrong information because they didn't talk to me. what happened was i posted a bunch of TMNT for-fun sketches on my tumblr that i had drawn a year or so prior as part of a daily warm-up sketch thing i'd done on my blog, and when IDW got the license i figured what the hey, i don't have to sit on this secret anymore. so i talked a little about it while also stating that my TMNT fanart was NOT for the Dark Horse book, i never did any art for that. except nobody paid attention and they presented my goof-off sketches as Dark Horse concept art, and i think one of them also said that my Mirage Raphael covers were unpublished fanart, etc. it was a mess, i'm a PR nightmare. XD i got in trouble with Dark Horse for that one, hehheh. it was unprofessional of me, i should've just said "another publisher" and left them unnamed. d'oh. anyway, i wasn't going to write the book, no, but i figure i would've had my hands in the story. we never got to the point of getting a writer except batting a few names around, we didn't get very far. |
IDW should definitely try to keep Ross Campbell attached to the book as much as possible. Can't wait to read that issue.

Does the Shredder he drew on that page bare any resemblance to the one they previewed at the Nick event? I know he said only the top row of Leo pictures are warmups for the comic, but thought maybe this design happened to look anything like what people saw. Some people said Shredder would look very aggressive and semi Super Shredder-ish (uggghg!). This pic looks like a nice compromise that I could get behind, though I think I would still prefer a more traditional looking Shredder / helmet.

Wow, his art has such an ''old school'' feel. That Don ''practice'' page just screams of awesomeness! I do hope IDW let's you do more work because that is candy for my eyes.
