A lof of girls watched the show. Girls just didn't use to play they were one of the TMNT (but rather April and Irma). TMNT was more gener-neutral than a lot of other 1970's and 80's action cartoons.

I really don't remember her having a thing for Donatello.

It was subtle but definitely there. "Sky Turtles" had a couple of the more blatant references that I can think of off the top of my head.
