Box Art
The box art for a lot of the Playmates toys was very memorable. Does anyone know who drew them or, better yet, have an archive of the designs?
|
I think this is a mystery... I'd like to know who did the art as well, not to mention I'd like to see any of the original art pre-packaging!
|
That's one of the things I remember the most about my childhood times with the Turtles. My favorites are the 'Flushomatic' and 'Turtle Van' boxes. One of the Turtles hanging on the wall while Shredder finally gets Leonardo? Crazy. And it seems that a lot of that art was done by one person. It looks similar.
It'd be great if people who have all of that stuff could post pictures on this thread so we can admire it... |
I want to say Ryan Brown did the art for some of the later figure card art... but I'm not 100% on this. We need the board member ToKKa on this one! He knows stuff about the old card art I think.

Ryan Brown did a bunch of 'em but I think many were done by in-house guys at playmates. Mirage fellas did more character design than they did box art.

I love the box art. I'll take that over a framed painting any day of the week. Not sure my wife would agree, I can't picture our living room covered in TMNT boxes! :)
|
Yes, this is something I looked for for a long time and have come up with just about nothing. As was stated earlier, most, if not all, of the art was simply done inhouse at PM and the artist(s) have gone uncredited. Likely the originals were simply tossed along the way...which is a shame.
|
It would be nice if there was a gallery of nice, clean versions of all of the art. That would probably be really tough though.

My favorite box art; the Technodrome, Sewers Playset, Party Wagon, and Mutant Module |
Quite liked the boxart on the Metal Mutants. It sort of had a Transformers discourse to it.

...Okay? What's the contribution here?

When I first saw the very first TMNT figs on shelves when i was around 7 or 8yo, the art on the packaging is what drew me to the figures almost as much as the figures themselves! The first figures had very eastman/liard style art, though i'm not sure they are responsible for it or not.
the later stuff like the party wagon above and a most other art is also very awesome. It always inspired me. I drew constantly through childhood and even to this day, and I've spent countless hours drawing TMNT. There is also a thread on the maps that were included inside TMNT packaging. I loved those too |
I always loved the art on the figure cards. I loved the Cave turtles. I know Ryan Brown did some of the art, he has said so at various conventions. I think he even named farmer Mike and a few others that he designed the actual figure.
|
Have to say the box art is one of the primary reasons I collect in-box vehicles. It would be incredible to one day see a production art book for the TMNT in some form one day. Pipe dream, but I gotta dream.

User nofuture4u posted a looooot of card scans in this thread http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/sho...=31333&page=27 :)

A lot boxes are really awesome. But some are really ugly.

Errol McCarthy is one artist who has been known to work for TMNT stuff. He was also the main-guy on many He-Man and the Masters of the Universe toy PR-artwork and cardbacks (He-Man, Skeletor, Man-At-Arms, Beast Man, Ram Man, Man-E-Faces, etc).
