TMNT Replica Suit/Fan Film Diary
Its always been a dream of mine to do a ninja turtle film, but getting a costume always seemed out of my reach. It wasnt till a forum member named something like Dextar show a foam made costume was an option. So i took a few notes from him and began work on my ninja turtle
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...ow/photo11.jpg http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...ow/photo21.jpg This is the mechanism that makes the mask talk http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...how/photo3.jpg Gum machine plastic containers for eyes http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...how/photo4.jpg http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...how/photo5.jpg Began gluing foam peices to shape head. The plan once the costume is complete is to make a few films. the first one is a ninja turtle themed episode for our show going nowhere - youtube.com/goingnowhereshow then later make something fans will really enjoy, tho i dont wanna spoil that. I will hopefuly update this daily :tgrin: |
Awesome dude, looking forward to seeing your progress. Good luck!
|
Cool stuff, dude. I look forward to seeing more of this!:tsmile:
|
Sweet! Don't forget to update us!
|
glad to see some interest here more of its progress
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/.../photo11-1.jpg http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/.../photo21-1.jpg looks more froglike in this photo, but with the top of the head and bandana, should look more ninja turtle like :teek: |
Wow! It is starting to get shape, great job! Hope to see more of this!
|
thanks.
so the head itself wont have eyebrows. the plan is to make interchangeable bandanas, each with their own expression to suit the turtle its supposed to be. ill do raphael first since thats the only turtle i need for the first film |
Done shaping the head
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...w/photo3-1.jpg http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...w/photo4-1.jpg thats wat the inside looks like http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...w/photo5-1.jpg Thats what it looks like with eyebrows/bandana:tgrin: |
You gotta give me some detail on building the under-structure so I can make one of these things.
The head was looking a little "iffy" until you put the bandana on. With the bandana, it looks absolutely fantastic!! |

this is the concept sketch of wats under the mask. The idea is the bottom lever has a chin strap. when u open ur mouth, it pull the bottom lever down. as u can see theres a metal bar by the back of the jaw that causes the upper lever to move up. attached to both levers is a spring in between to shut the mouth when i close it. The bottom jaw is attached to the lower lever. The upper lip is attached to the upper lever, and right behind the upper lever is another lever that doesnt move at all. thats were the upper teeth are. Thats probably the best i can explain the mechanism |
Where'd you get the metal bars - did you fabricate them yourself? I think I could handle the foam part and assembling the metal, but as far as acquiring and shaping the metal, I'm at a loss.
|
well, i cant do that either, my dad is a plumber so he helped me do the physical labor of the mechanism. to keep it light, he made the levers out of pvc i think. the metal is aluminum so it can be bent how i needed and stay sturdy. The design is the most important thing, u can get creative with how u pull it off. it can be any material as long as it gets the job done (i think, :p).

It looks really good with the bandana!
|
Just echoing what others have said. With the bandana you really see it coming together. Rad.
|
Impressive low-tech work. I look forward to seeing where this goes.
|
Dude, that is awesome! I can't wait to see some footage of it in action!
|
Well, i started putting latex on it.
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...w/photo1-1.jpg http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...how/photo2.jpg Total of 3 layers of latex http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...w/photo3-2.jpg While it dries, i started carving the upper body off of a big thick peice of upholstery foam. http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...w/photo4-2.jpg http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...w/photo5-2.jpg This is were my costume making starts to differentiate from dextars version. First carved the inside that fits my body (using and electric carving knife), then carved the general shape of the outside. Then i would go over that with a nice pair of scissors to start getting detail. I do that to two peices then afterward ill glue them together with a good contact adhesive. I'll finish making the whole body before latexing it. |
|
Wow man! You're doing the hole suit! I wonder what material are you gonna use for the shell ? Great job so far!
