Possibility of Steve Barron Director's Cut?

This interview is about a week old, so forgive me if this info has been posted elsewhere.

http://www.denofgeek.com/tv/teenage-...interview-tnmt

Here's the related excerpt; pertinent part is in green:

Thank you, because that one didn't work out at all. All right, so, asides from this current one, what’s your favourite iteration of Ninja Turtles?

Rick Magallanes: And I can't pick this one?

No, that'd be cheating.

Rick Magallanes: I don't like that question. I actually liked the last movie. I thought the last movie was really well done.

Kevin Eastman: I would say, hands down, the original Steve Barron movie. It was the perfect blend of the original black and white comics and the animated series. I saw it recently, within the last couple of years, on the big screen. I hadn't seen it since the 90s, since when it came it out, and when I saw it again so many parts of it still hold up. Steve's visual sense, his storytelling sense, what Jim Henson did with the creatures, with the costuming to make them actually work; that's my favourite.

I watch it regularly, because I'm cool, and what's great is that in the first ten minutes, you have everything in there. They clear everything through to get straight into the story. It doesn't get the credit it deserves, I don't think.

Kevin Eastman: I've kept in touch with Steve over the years, and he has, I'll have to talk to some bosses at Nickelodeon, he has a cut that he's done which, he was able to save a lot of original footage, and he's asked a couple of times to do a director’s cut and he kind of gets turned down. But I think it would be great to see. Back in those days they still sent us dailies, they sent us some fantastic stuff.

So do this mean there's a director's cut of the first TMNT film just sitting around in Steve Barron's vault of TMNT awesomeness that he WANTS to release but can't??

It means the people at Nick better not deny us a director's cut of the first movie.

Come on release this stuff I want to see it now. I wonder if he could just release it over the net for free? Would he get in trouble from nick? I mean I know they own tmnt but do they own something like that which is someones own work?

Actually...doesn't Warner Bros. own the TMNT movies? Could that be part of the problem, Viacom and Warners would have to come to terms.

Would be nice to see a DC of tmnt 1 but it wont be from Nick/Paramount seeing as TMNT 1's US distribution rights are owned by New Line/WB. WB sadly does't want to spend money on Catalogue titles unlike SyFy who is got Barron to do commentary for Treasure Island miniseries.

I don't think we'll be seeing a director's cut until next year at the least. Movie studios usually don't release Blu-Rays/DVDs unless there's some kind of buzz surrounding the franchise. This is the reason why only three of the eight original Firday the 13th films are on Blu-Ray.

So either expect it next year when the new toon is in full swing, or when the Platinum Dunes film releases.

Ha, I'll drink to that! I'd kill for this. To have a film that's near perfect already have added footage & whatnot... Dream come true.

And hopefully minus the lame dubbing like the kid Tatsu kills but is actually coughing for some reason, even though another dude checks his pulse and has a grave look on his face.

If it does come, hopefully it's released on Blu-ray and this movie is given the treatment it deserves with director commentary, extensive behind-the-scenes, and the like. Sure, there's the German DVD Barron commentary, but I'd like to hear him speak about his preferred cut also.

so the new turtles will carry eyeballs? but how come playmates toy does not give them eyeballs...

Hi guys. I'm glad to see that people have found the interview I did with Rich and Kevin. I'd agree that this is the most interesting part of it (although I hope some of you will have a read of the whole thing).

It didn't seem as though a directors cut release was currently on the agenda, but I am hopeful that we'll get see it. I think, with all the current franchise activity and the upcoming movie, it's more likely to see release than it ever has been before.

Also, although this is probably irrelevant, based on the current Amazon listing, it seems to be the case that the recent blu-ray box set is out of print.

Kevin did seem to have a genuine enthusiasm for the film, and the team(s) behind the recent comics, film and TV series all seem keen to have Kevin involved, so I do think there are reasons to be hopeful.

I have a cousin named Matt Edwards. Dunno if he can even talk yet though.

bloodstainedwings 06-16-2012 12:39 AM

I would love for this to happen, but I don't know how long I can hold off getting the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Blu-Ray tripple pack for $20. When I got these movies on DVD I over paid for them at the time, I paid $30+tax each. Anyone else is the same boat??

On second thought if it truly is a second version of the film it would be cool owning both versions. The only problem I would have is will it ruin the movie I grew up with??

O_O I haven't paid that much for just one movie on DVD for about ten years.

Its been about 10 years or so since I bought them. I am not 100% sure when I got them. I know it was before TMNT got popular in 2k3, because I had to hunt them down. I remember all 3 being sold together for about $30, about a year after I bought them.

I guess I should not worry about the price I paid for a movie over 10 years ago.

The most I ever spent on one DVD movie was $40 and that was King Kong 2005.

Looking back I see that was a bit much to own a movie, even of it was King Kong.

A Director's Cut of TMNT, along with some rad special features, would make my life nearly complete. I would love a behind the scenes featurette, as well as some more original documentaries as bonus features.

I don't think that's likely to be me. It doesn't sound like me.
