Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel Studios have confirmed that the next entry into the cinematic universe in 2014 will be a movie based on the cult title Guardians of the Galaxy. Think a cosmic "Avengers". Probably best known for having a super-powered racoon as a member

The evil mastermind behind the invasion in The Avengers will feature heavily in the story.

Awesome. I look forward to seeing more from this movie. :)

I am so excited for the release of this film and yes Rocket Raccoon is probably 90% of that excitement! :tgrin:

I have a friend who grew up with the original so he is kind of miffed that his team isn't coming to the screen. Honestly i haven't read any so I'm just hoping it will be a fun Marvel movie.

Now that casting has been happening I figure I'd bring this thread out of mothballs.

This film's casting has gotten...odd but here it is:

Chris Pratt: Peter Quill / Star-Lord
WWE Wrestler Dave Bautista: Drax The Destroyer
Zoe Saldana: Gamora
Glenn Close: Head of Nova Corps

The villains will be played by Lee Pace, Michael Rooker and...cast today.... Karen "Amy Pond" Gillan!! She's listed as playing the LEAD FEMALE VILLAIN.

What is it with Doctor Who actors playing bad guys in Marvel films?! Chris Eccleston is the lead villain Mecliath the Accursed in Thor 2 and now we got Karen Gillan in Guardians of the Galaxy!

Benicio Del Toro Takes Lead Role In Marvel’s ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’

EXCLUSIVE: Benicio Del Toro has joined the killer cast of the James Gunn-directed Marvel Studios franchise launcher Guardians Of The Galaxy. They are keeping his role under wraps, but he’s playing a character that is built to be part of future Marvel films, which means he has signed a deal with options that put him into multiple movies. It’s funny how when Marvel Studios first started making option-heavy deals, actors and their agents grumbled loudly. But guys like Samuel L. Jackson and Mark Ruffalo have done great stuff in short doses in incredibly high profile films. Now, it will be intriguing to see what the company does with a property that doesn’t have the road-tested brand awareness of a Captain America, Thor, or Iron Man. I have to say that given the high bar for quality that Marvel has set under Kevin Feige–Iron Man 3 being the latest crowd-pleasing example–I’m more excited about this than the other space-based project Disney is banking on, Star Wars.

John C. Reilly Firmed For Rhomann Dey, leader of the Nova Corps, In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’

By MIKE FLEMING JR | Friday June 14, 2013 @ 9:28am PDT

UPDATE: I got it backward. John C. Reilly will play Rhomann Dey, leader of the Nova Corps in Marvel Studios‘ Guardians Of The Galaxy, the James Gunn-directed franchise launch that stars Benicio Del Toro, Glenn Close, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace, and Michael Rooker. He’s not playing Ronan the Accuser, the Kree Empire’s badass juror and military governor in space. According to Comicvine.com, here’s the deal on Rhomann Dey:

Rhomann Dey was the leader of the Nova Corps on the planet Xandar when the planet was destroyed by the space pirate Zorr. Seemingly everyone else was killed in the attack, including Dey’s family. Dey swore vengeance on Zorr and chased him across the galaxy, battling him along the way. He became mortally wounded and paralyzed after an encounter causing him to seek a replacement who could stop Zorr and make him pay for his crimes. His ship came into orbit of Earth, where Zorr was taking refuge, and he selected a human to inherit his power. That human was a young Richard Rider.

Rhomann Dey linked minds with Rider and explained to him the new powers he has received as well as the threat of Zorr on his planet. At first, Rider thought the encounter was a dream, but soon discovered his powers and accepted his role as Nova. While out testing them for the first time he ran into Zorr who was on a rampage in New York City. Nova decided to fulfill the one who gave him his powers dying wish and defeat Zorr. During the battle, Zorr was teleported away by Rhomann Dey himself. Dey killed Zorr before he himself died, ready to join his family and friends in the afterlife.

Considering that his last voice acting role in film was a giant with a limited vocabulary... and his delivery helped sell what is frequently cited as one of the most emotional moments in animated film history... I can get behind this.
