Are packaging errors really worth that much?

I know...silly thread but I was lead to search eBay to "test the waters" on how much people inflate prices of packaging errors, and for the most part it's not a huge thing, though some are kind of crazy.

So...what are your thoughts? Are they only worth it to collectors of packaging boo-boos, thus limiting the market, or should we all be scouring all stores for a Leonardo on a April O'Neil card with upside-down stickers?

Only if they are mega mega rare

On a serious note, I personally can't imagine ever spending more on an error than I would if it was normal. From what I can tell there is a niche for error figures and the like, but I can only imagine the niche for error packaging is even smaller.

I saw a Neca Leonardo with a Raphael name insert that was a helluva lot cheaper than neca figures usually are a while back.

I would never pay extra for a packaging error since I don't care about packaging.

The only time packaging errors are at all worth owning is if they are interesting in some way. For example let's say there was both a Splinter action figure and a Hamato Yoshi figure, and somehow a Splinter figure was inside a Hamato Yoshi package... that might be cool.

99% of the time, it's not interesting to me.

have seen some sizable price increases but in my case I just dont see the value in an error. Others may disagree.

I only like errors that enhance a figures display characteristics. For example, under cover turtles all came with collectors cards, but Leonardo also came with a collectors coin that said "UNDER COVER TURTLE". It would be such an awesome error to find an under cover don/raph/mike also with a coin.

However, error coins, error cards etc. are visually displeasing to me. However some people will pay a lot for these for some reason. Of course there are exceptions to this, like Under Cover Leo with a rocksteady coin is still cool because it is a carded under cover leo.

I saw that someone paid $200 on eBay for a 1988 Mike on a Don card. I would rather take the $200 somewhere else and get a way cooler figure.

I agree with most everyone else. I am not into the error pieces. I like the the way they were suppose to be.

This pretty much depends on what type of collector you are. I wouldn't spend the money on something such as Kraang label on an April figure, but there are people who would shell out a good bit for stuff like that.

Personally, I don't see the point in paying for a package that is misprinted. If you are a MOC collector, wouldn't you want your figure to have the correct labels?

yea i personally don't think errors in packaging are worth it nor should they be priced that high in the first place. it kind of looks dumb to me. but i guess... if you are a vicious collector, the prices may be justified. personal preference definitely at work here. some collectors find a way to justify the price of a certain item.

I think I paid about 8 bucks including shipping for Toon Raph on Toon Zak's card.

Yeah I'd say that's about the right price for things like that. For me anyway. Things are only worth what someone will pay for it.

I've never quite understood the hullabaloo over carded errors, to be honest, though it is a cool novelty.

I have an actual packaging error from the Paleo Patrol Mini Mutants line where Don was packed with the Winged Dino rather than Raph (card even reads "Raph").

pannoni1 09-22-2012 11:09 AM

Just like any other collectible, it all comes down to demand, which is driven by the popularity of the standard item and the magnitude of the error. I'd say off-centered errors and those that involve a main character being substituting for another (Shredder on Splinter, one Turtle on another, Rocksteady on Bebop) will be worth the most. However, a Scratch on anything else is viable to have a high value since Scratch itself is a key figure. AFA certification would really help in such situations.

That would actually be pretty cool

I collect Package errors, but I wouldn't shellout that much for it, $20 would be my price range. Its also a future investment in my opinion.

tmntgoldcoin 09-23-2012 09:49 AM

Personally it all depends on the error. I have been selling errors from star wars, gi joe, and tmnt for years. You have to find the right collector and the error has to be unique. Figures that have their own card art 1988-1990 go for a lot more when miscarried as opposed to when the switched the green card back with stand art 1992ish and just a name written above the bubble. A figure like movie 3 april micarded on a mitsu package doesn't go for much; but a 1988 original 10 back turtle miscarded can go for a couple hundred.

Zarana-X 09-24-2012 01:13 PM

It depends. Stamp and coin collectors go nuts over errors. Maybe being government issued has somethign to do with it.
