The cover on the new TMNT Adventures Vol. 3 TPB makes me sad

So I just picked up my copy of the TMNT Adventures Vol 3 TPB and while I've been disappointed by Jim Lawson's covers for one reason or another thus far, my sadness on this one comes from the colors too.

The turtles, except Raph, all have red masks. WTF! Way to fail Joana Lafuente, and everyone at IDW who let this slip through approval.

I know its not really a big deal...but come on, it hints at the level of effort being put into these reprints.

Powder 01-11-2013 08:11 PM

Wow. IDW really has let some poor coloring stuff see print. The amount of mistakes/inaccuracies/unprofessional practices seen in all of the reprinted material is pretty disappointing.

ToTheNines 01-11-2013 08:17 PM

Really? That saw print? I figured it was an early version and they'd fix it.

CyberCubed 01-11-2013 08:18 PM

I think its pretty funny that some of the covers for the Mirage reprints had color bandanas, now the Archie reprints have red bandanas.

I'm OK with errors happening in this direction. Karma. :)

I'm going to have to buy a copy of this.

frank_one 01-12-2013 11:37 AM

They all have red masks? Sounds good to me. :tgrin:

Redeemer 01-12-2013 12:36 PM

THis is why I dont get this collected archies......they are just so piss poor.

CyberCubed 01-12-2013 01:21 PM

I find the way Lawson drew Wyrm kinda funny.

Jephael 01-14-2013 10:06 AM

Geez, after taking a good look at that crappy cover, I'm glad I've already got the original Archie series as originally printed, and therefore have no need for these piss-poor reprints!

Powder 01-14-2013 11:05 AM

Crappy cover? Have some respect for the legendary Lawson.

CyberCubed 01-14-2013 11:07 AM

You know I think they should have had Lawson do the Mirage trade covers and Dooney do the Archie ones.

Lawson's art is obviously better suited for Mirage and Dooney has a better take on the OT TMNT design.

Matches Malone 01-14-2013 11:13 AM

I can't say I agree. Dooney's turtles look great and are a good representation of the more serious Mirage series, except of course when they're collections of the McWeeney & co.

Lawson's turtles, on the other hand, are really cartoony now, albeit not in the same style as the Fred Wolf cartoon. Plus, I think the idea is that the covers should be represented by one of the artists who drew the series, since he drew a good amount of the Archie issues.

I've also been thinking about how awesome it would have been if we got a cartoon that was modeled after Lawson's style. Would've been cool.

Oh my god, this idea is amazing. I've just started animating and got Flash too, maybe I can do a short somewhere down the line... :o:tgrin:

DrSpengler 01-14-2013 12:16 PM

Considering how angular and geometric it is, one would think Lawson's contemporary style would lend itself to animation rather efficiently.

I'm down with Lawson doing covers for these (though I'd love to see Mitchroney do a few), though I don't think this Vol. 3 cover is one of his better efforts. The layout's just kinda... boring.

All the villains arbitrarily standing in the foreground then looking over their shoulders at the TMNT, "Oh hay lookie there its the turtles now where'd they come from I wonder hmmmm..."

He can do a lot better, I think.

I agree he can do ALOT better.

I respect Lawson, and love the work he did in Tales and Mirage Vols. 1, 2 and 4, but all of the Adventures trade covers have been tacky looking, poorly inked and muddly colored messes. That's in stark contrast to the Dooney covers for the classics trades. Those Dooney covers are beautiful!

I think IDW dropped the ball on the covers for these because clearly the job should have went to Chris Allen. His depiction of the TMNT is what I most closely relate to the Adventure series and he's possibly my favorite TMNT artist of all time.

discordiatookie 01-14-2013 02:06 PM

I quite like the cover, bit silly with the red bandanas though!

Only issue for me is that Krang is very vol 4 Utromy...

Matches Malone 01-14-2013 02:13 PM

I definitely liked the first volume of the turtles riding the pizza slice. It's just so goofy and fits perfectly with the cartoon vibe.

All signs point to yes.
