Does anyone feel Mikey's goofy attitude is abit....too much?

Don't get me wrong, I still love this Mikey as much as every other incarnation of him. (But the 2k3 version is still my favorite) but this is a point that BlackNerdComedy has recently made in a video of his and I agree with him wholeheartedly. It seems like the writers have made Mikey alittle too dumb in this new series and every other quote that comes out of his mouth is him cracking a joke or responding to someone else in a very stupid way, as if it's the only true way to get a laugh from the audience without having to resort to using the other characters for humor. I know there are times where the turtles have their own way of being funny, what with Donnie and his attempts as wooing in April, Raph's sarcasm, or Leo's really, REALLY bad one liners during battle, but it seems like most of the time Mikey is stealing all the comedic thunder from the other turtles and most of it just gets abit repetitive. I really think that next season or somehow in the new few episodes before this season is over they really tone it down with the Mikey jokes because they've become quite excessive and they're making Mikey look dumber and dumber by each episode. I don't think '87 and 2k3 Mikey were ever this stupid, it really shouldn't be necessary for this Mikey to be really stupid.

Donatello19 03-02-2013 12:42 PM

I agree that they made him a little "dumber" in the new show, but I really like this version of Mikey and he does make me laugh. I don't have a problem with it, but I think they should let the other characters be more funny for a change.

BabyTurtles 03-02-2013 01:01 PM

some episodes have Mikey doing most of the joking around some episodes he does it less :3 it just depends on the writers I guess :3

Personally I like him and his jokes XD

and you probably heard this a million times but he's not "dumb" he just doesn't focus on stuff around him.
he gets easily distracted by stuff and doesn't listen when he should be XD this makes him appear dumb....but when he actually does focus you notice how competent he really is. (more than usually at least)

imagine if he paid attention all the time? he'd probably be one strong ninja!

That's exactly the point I'm trying to make. They shouldn't rely on Mikey's stupidity the whole time to get cheap laughs. They need to let the other turtles, heck, other characters around Mikey have some shot at jokes. Just because Mikey's the funny one doesn't mean he should hog all the funny parts to himself, especially when they get repetitive.

Exactly... And I stand by my opinion, I like Mikey the way he is.

pannoni1 03-02-2013 03:40 PM

Actually, I feel that Mikey is getting less goofy as the show has progessed thus far, while still showing enough goofiness to show that it is Mikey, and Raph does a good job sometimes to tell him to chill and I enjoy those scenes and he's the Turtle that appeals to the youngest demographic so I can say the 3-8 years enjoy Michelangelo just like I did when the OT aired. Sure he's done the girly scream again like in 4kids, but that's part of being the youngest brother. Now if another Turtle was goofy, well that would bother me since Michelangelo has always been the comic relief of the bunch, even in Mirage.

In the TCRI episode I loved were Leo imitated the Kraang when talking about the human employees being oblivious to them. Even Raph got some quips in as well.

To answer the question, no. This is the first time I've actually found Mikey funny.

ToTheNines 03-02-2013 03:51 PM

Short answer: yes. But I love Cipes as Mike.

My one "requirement" for Mikey is that he's funny (because I know no one's going to do much more than make him comic relief) and this Mikey makes me laugh pretty regularly.

However, they go way too over the top with him sometimes. Perfect example is New Girl in Town... his "gardening" line was hilarious, then they had to go off and have him ramble about how he put the cherry on dat sundae or some stupid sh*t.

Total facepalm.

Mikey was my favorite back then, and I still love him. There are moments where it does go on too long. Like tothenines said. But the reason I liked him so much and still do is because he's a goofball. And I enjoyed his scenes w/ leatherhead.

Shredded 03-02-2013 04:15 PM

I don't even think of this version as dumb.
In fact I think he is smarter than the 2k3 version, whom I thought had moments of being genuinely dumb and completely un-aware in some situations, while new Mikey, even though cracking a lot of jokes, never seem as un-aware of the situation.

He just acts dumb because that's a role that's easy to fall into among his brothers. And he enjoys being a prankster, annoying his brothers on purpose.

When the situation does arrive though, when it's time for him to stand up, he does!

Also I love how it's highlighted that he actually has some very unique qualities to him in this version, things he is better at than his brothers.
He is a peoples person, loving to meet new people and learn to know them, he is incredible sweet and never mean (even when he annoys his brothers on purpose.) he is genuinly curious about the world around him, and clearly wish to explore it. He meets the world with a sort of curious wide-eyed innocence and wanting to figure it all out, while giving every-body a chance to show they are good and be friends, he really wants to learn to know people.
And well, those are very inspiring qualities to me.

And also seems to me that his joke cracking has more to do with him not liking silence, or him trying to break the tension getting to best out of every situation. (why be gloomy when you don't have to be?) more than it comes out of any stupidity persay.

I like him here. At least he's not overly cocky despite being a complete coward like 4kids Mikey.

This Mikey is fun, if a little dumb, but there are often moments where he's the voice of reason, like in this last episode.

And come on, the whole "Next elevator shaft fight..." bit was awesome.

NinjaMan 03-02-2013 05:34 PM

I love this version of Mikey. My wife says he's her favorite turtle. She finds him cute and funny.

Guitar_Raph 03-02-2013 05:42 PM

Greg Cipes does a cool job as Mikey. Would love to see Mikey play the guitar & sing like Cipes does in real life. That would be awesome!

My favorite moment from Nick Mikey, SMOKE BOMBS!

(POOF!)

Yeah, all this, plus he's so Goddamned adorable.

After 2K3 Mikey, I think what they're doing with him in the Nick series is a breath of fresh air. He's funny, albeit ignorant to a lot of stuff, but he's also brave when he has to be and he's endearing. 2K3 Michelangelo was a blithering imbecile and a coward.

NinjaMan 03-02-2013 06:02 PM

Thanks to Mikey I now know what a Shriners parade is LOL.

oldmanwinters 03-02-2013 06:03 PM

I really do like Michelangelo in this show.

My fear is that the show might fall into the habit of trying to use him as "stupid" funny guy. I see hints of these kinds of pitfalls now and then, like when Leo said "We're not in Kansas anymore" during the TCRI raid and Mikey actually seemed genuinely confused as to whether they were in New York or not. Stuff like that makes me trepidatious of the future.

Hopefully, Nick will at least avoid the error of the 4Kids show which made Mikey a borderline narcissist in later seasons to the point where he would emote very little concern for his friends and family when they were in genuine danger (ala Splinter's cyber scramble).

TheSmartOne 03-02-2013 10:01 PM

I honestly don't think Mikey is stupid, and though a lot of his jokes kind of play off of the fact that he's a goof ball and supposedly dumb, I think that both his brothers and the audience, are meant to underestimate him.

I think Mikey's main issue is that his priorities are kind of skewed. He's ignorant on a lot of subjects that most would consider common knowledge (like the DNA thing), but this ignorance seems to stem from the fact he doesn't really bother to care much for science and other 'unimportant' things. Where as compare that to how quickly he was able to pick up Bradford's 'Death Dragon", a technique Donnie called 'Complex, yet effective". Mikey probably got to see Bradford preform that move once, maybe twice, and yet he was able to show it off to his brothers. Nick Mikey shows real focus, skill and attention when it comes to what lines up as 'important' in his head; And so far, that seems to be his brothers, martial arts, and pizza.

Case and point, I think Mikey has a brain. He just doesn't always use it ;) Plus the fact that he acts the goof ball is really classic of a younger brother. The youngest sibling usually has to compete with the attention and expertise already established by the older ones: Before Leo was the leader, he was 'The Responsible One'. Raph is 'The Tough One'. Donnie's 'The Smart One'. The youngest kid usually have the room to butt into the areas his bros have already secured as 'their thing". It really doesn't surprise me that Mikey's always making jokes and quips and being loud XD It's just his way of making himself visible.
Anyways, I love Mikey, and I haven't gotten tired of him yet. I actually want to see another episode like the Leatherhead one. It really highlighted another side to Mikey aside from the airheaded goofball, and I want to see his character expand.
