Changing The Tone

Been going back and forth in my head if this is really thread-worthy. Only one way to find out, I guess . . .

Do you think this series can avoid changing the tone towards it's end-run? I know the question is premature, but I ask considering how the OT and 4Kids made 180s in (some would say) an inferior manner.

I wonder if the creative team behind this series is mindful of that, and if the series does go in a different direction, it would be more naturally occurring.

Well, assuming that the turtles will 'age' in some way, the show will probably get a little bit grittier, with more mature problems for the team to tackle.

Good point. And that would be a more naturally occurring evolution, rather than a flip-of-the-switch like we saw before.

I definitely get the feeling that if the show goes on long enough, the writers are going to age the Turtles and April to about 18 years old.

I can definitely see some of the silly anime expressions fading from the show if that happens.

Aww, I'd be sad to see them go, too. But it would probably be a step in the right direction if they intend to show how the gang has matured.

They probably will. It IS a cartoon after all. Or they might 'grow up' but design-wise, they'd look the same. Honestly, if it wasn't for the Fast Foward and Back to the Sewers animation style change, the Turtles would have looked exactly the same as how they looked like in season 1.

CyberCubed 03-12-2013 09:36 PM

I think it might be cool to see the Turtles slowly age through each season. We could see April graduating High School and becoming an adult and then a reporter or whatever.

It might not be likely, but possible. Or they could do a time skip in the final seasons of the show in an attempt to rebrand the show, similar to Red Sky or FF/BTTS.

I would guess aging the turtles would be the way to go, even if they continue to look the same. The fans are going to grow older, and it's too early to tell whether the show will catch on with future viewers, once they're old enough to check out the show.

It will probably depend on what kind of shows become popular in the the future. I guess the Nick turtles team will have to decide whether to embrace new trends to attract the next wave of kids, or to become a more mature show to hold on to their aging fans.

CyberCubed 03-13-2013 11:15 PM

It'll be interesting if when Season 2 begins the Turtles have their "16th birthday." It'll be proof they'll age throughout each year of the show.

Shark_Blade 03-14-2013 05:44 AM

But then they'll never be "Teenage" Mutant Ninja Turtles anymore.

BubblyShell22 03-14-2013 08:47 AM

What do you mean? They'll still be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles up to at least nineteen if they were to age that much. They just won't be teenagers after their twenties.

TheSmartOne 03-14-2013 10:22 AM

I wouldn't mind if the tone changed. I didn't find it such a huge stretch in the 4kids version (Excluding the last two seasons. There was a major tone change, but since it was pretty much a complete overhaul and art change, I consider it more of a studio forced change, rather then a naturally occurring story change). Even seeing the turtles growing older would be a nice touch. I'm not sure if it's bound to happen, but according to Mr Pulverizer, it's already been a few months since the series 'start'. So they're not completely ignoring the concept of time :)

I say the gang will age... Months have passed in-story remember? I say they'll turn 16 in Season 2, and 17 in Season 3... mayb3 5 Season's maximum

oooorr they could be like Ash ketchum and never age XD

Well Dick Clark always described himself as America's Oldest Teenager, and the Turtles could still be teenagers at heart, just like we all get once in awhile. The show already has a tone that seems to be friendly for the long run (darker than most of the OT, but not as dark as 4kids) that works fine. Improved CGI later on, April having an adult job, Shredder/The Kraang becoming allies, space travel, and different music will all grow this series over time. But a dramatic tone change down the road needs to wait until staleness starts to show with the current forumla.

Jephael 03-16-2013 09:27 PM

Keep in mind that turtles live way longer than humans. In both the Mirage and Archie comics they lived to be well over 100. They could still be teenagers in their 30s.
