Turtles mentioned on The Weakest Link

I don't know if anyone seen this but a few days ago there was a Turtles related question on the game show The Weakest Link.

The question asked by Anne was something like:
"What word is used by surfers as a sign of celebration and was also used by the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles ?"

And the woman answers "Cowabunga !".
It kind of put a smile of my face, to be honest I didn't think she'd know it because she was quite old and Turtles haven't been big here for years. I guess it proves how popular they were though. :D

Please stop using the "H" word.

The 7th Turtle 06-11-2003 06:14 AM

if we're already talking about the H word... why are they called sometimes heroes and sometimes ninjas?

Nturtle 06-11-2003 06:49 AM

 Thats great!!

Well in England and other places that the turtles started airing in when it became really poplar, the word "ninja" was associated with shadyness, murderous and not fit to be kids' role models. So they changed the title to "Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles".

And before somebody asks for the quintilienth time, the scenes with Mikey's nunchuckus were also edited out because in England there is a sort of weird standard against nunchucks. So in 1989 the creators of the show decided to replace hs nunchucks with a grappling hook.

Anne, you will DIE BY MY HANDS!!!!!!!!!

Every time I see the occurence of the dreaded "H" word instead of "Ninja" in TMNT, it makes me think of the Far Side comic with all of these Daniel Boone looking guys sitting in a classroom, with one of them as the teacher. The teacher is standing up in front of the class with his arms crossed and one of the "students" is standing in the corner (just like a child in trouble does). The caption goes something like this:

"Anybody else wanna say anything? This here is buffalo hunter's school! Anybody so much as whispers the word "bison" can join Johnson over in the corner over there!"

So, in a sense, I could make an image of that same comic but modify to fit the TMNT unverse like this:

"Anybody else wanna say anything? This here is a Ninja Turtles fan forum! Anybody so much as whispers the word "hero" can join [insert name of person who said "hero" here] in the corner over there!"

Why did they have to call it Hero turtles on an american tv show? That's stupid! If people can't even say 'ninja' on tv, the terrorists have won!

1) One of the airings of the show is hosted by a British woman (Anne)

2) Shows like that originated in the UK (WWTBAM? namely)

 I've seen that Far side before!!!

I bet peter Laird rolls in his grave everytime he hears "H-ro turtles".....wait that isn't right......

Krangfan 06-11-2003 06:53 PM

wow, when you try to sing the original theme song with "hero" instead of "ninja" it sounds wrong! It just doesn't go right :dead:

Actually I've uncovered substantial evidence that the real Peter Laird actually passed away some time ago and was replaced with a cyborg duplicate. It wouldn't be so farfetched. After all, Rupert Murdoch's been dead for ten years and Ted Turner's just a hologram...

SHHH! :o If you say his name three times he'll appear in your room and swallow your soul! How the hell do you think he's managed to survive this long???
