What was with the turtles voices???

Not matching the correct turtles? What I mean is in the OT why was it that sometimes lets say... Mikey would be talking but on screen it was Raph's lips moving? Or sometimes the colors wouldn't match up to the turtle. Leo would have Donny's colors or vice versa and so on. I have been wondering this since i was a kid and I hope there's a answer out there.

That was just animation in the late 20th century. Imperfected and RIPE with inconsistencies.

I honestly figured that. Something with the animation department or whatever. I just wanted to hear it from someone who knew. Thx for that! A great wonder from my childhood 25 years later solved! Lol :D

And I love that "RIPE with inconsistencies"

There were tons of animation errors in the OT. Characters speaking with the wrong voice or coloring errors.

Given that all 4 turtles look identical without color, and their belt initials were sometimes obscured, colorists would mistakenly paint one turtle as another. A pretty easy to make mistake, I figure.

It wasn't just mistakes with the Turtles. There were a few Rocksteady/Bebop mistakes, April speaking in Irma's voice in (ironically) "Muckman Messes Up", and perhaps the most bizarre mistake was Shredder containing General Traag's voice in "Turtles at the Earth's Core". Amazingly Traag never appeared in that episode! I wish I had all of the episode scripts/storyboards to inspect what was the intended character that was speaking a particular passage to see if it was the animator's fault or (I'm 99.9% sure it never happened) the voice director's fault. Then again it could be the writer's fault since in my first draft of the episode Menace, Maestro Please, there were several lines that were spoken by a different character in the actual episode compared to what was on the script. The production equipment used in the OT is a fossil compared to what's used with the Nick series! The dialogue was recorded on analog tape, animation was filmed via a Xerox-like process, and being that the animators had little knowledge with regards to which Turtle is what, especially earlier on, it was only logical that mistakes would occur.

Umm if you read my first post that's exactly what I said. Colors not matching/voices not matching.

Powder 04-14-2013 06:09 PM

You also said Ralph. I am unfamiliar with that character.

It was even Turtles that this happened,Transformers had this same problem it was just the nautre of the cartoons at the time

The weapon errors were hilarious too, like Raph throwing his sai's and in the very next shot they're back in his belt buckle.

lol I remember I would feel like I was the smart one 'cus I knew that that turtle voice was Leonardo but it came out of Danatello's mouth, Or Leo wearing an orange bandana and I would be all "That's not right!"
I think there was an episode where there was a Turtle wearing a purple bandana with the wrong voice and then in the next shot was the actual Donatello.

Still irks me but it's classic. Gives it some character ;)

Animation errors were quite common in 80s cartoons. There was also the matter that the voice actor being absent as well. I believe Cam Clarke and Townsend Coleman were around for the entire run. Barry Gordon was come and go and Rob Paulsen wasn't available in several episodes particularly the European Vacation arc and the final seasons.

Very welcome bro!

I would say that the animation errors are nothing compared to all of the animation errors seen in the Five Faces of Darkness Five episode story to kick off Season 3 of the G1 Transformers cartoon. That might have more errors in 5 episodes than the rest of the entire TF series and the entire FW series Turtles cartoon.

When you often times have multiple colorists & animators working to crank out episodes fast its understandable that little mistakes like these happen.
