Your Profession

Hey Dromers,

I thought it'd be cool to see what everyone does for a living. We probably had a thread like this before, but I want to keep it updated, and I changed careers since I posted, probably.

I'm the Systems Administrator for a flooring company. I do Help Desk stuff, manage servers and write web code for their Intranet.

What about you? :)

Interesting thread :)
Well 9-5 I work in a hardware store, it's kinda cool. I've worked there for many years and every day is different as I do a bit of everything. I'm pretty good at DIY now! ;)
On my day off I run a stall selling my artwork, tshirts and pin badges so I kinda have two jobs at the moment.

I'm what they call a Production Control Trainee for an Arkansas based department store chain. I work 3 12 hour days a week, 6pm to 6am (actually to get the full 40 hours, I go in at 4:40 every day.)

What we do is monitor the stores computer systems and fix any abnormally ending programs, or contact someone who can. At times it can be slow (most of the time, really.) but when things really start to blow up, it can be crazy.

I work at the local library. I do various jobs there, some of the stuff I do is...

Clerk Work - Checking books out, checking books in, shelving books, helping patrons find books, helping patrons on the computer, etc.

Custodial Work - Cleaning, Mowing, Shoveling Snow, Watering Plants, Taking care of the Boiler and Air Conditioner, etc.

Outreach - Delivering books to the handicapped and elderly.

The only stuff I don't really do is answer the phone, order new books and movies, and I don't do my boss's job, obviously.

It's actually a really great place to work. I don't read very much myself, but just being in a library is really relaxing. Except if you're the only person there and it's pretty dark, then it's kind of spooky. Overall though, it's my favorite of all the jobs I've had.

Freelance scenic designer, I design sets for theater. It's a fun yet hectic job, but I get to work from home a lot of the time, which means I can raise my 9 month old son while my wife works full time.

Some actors I've worked with over the years include; Peter Lockyer who starred in Phantom on Broadway, Ron Palillo a couple of times, and Alan Oppenheimer who voiced Skeletor, Man-At-Arms, Mer-Man, Battlecat, and Falcor.

In July I'm starting a new job as the Technical Director for a theater in CT, but I'll still do design work on the side.

I work at a gym (technically 3 gyms all part of the same franchise) as a personal trainer and fitness consultant. I do a little of everything that needs to be done, from marketing and membership sales to light custodial and maintenance, all of which gets kind of tedious, but on the good side of it I provide physical assessment evaluations, design exercise programs for people, and work with them one-on-one to ensure safety and results. The training side of things more than makes up the nonsense I have to deal with on the sales/consultant side of things. I work 6-7 days a week most of the time, which can be kind of a grind, but it's way better than what most people have to do for a living and I honestly can't think of anything I'd rather do. Even on a bad day, I usually can't wait to get to work, and usually stick around long past the time I'm paid to be there.

I much prefer the physical side of things to the sales side of things. At one of our locations the people living there are very argumentative in general, many of them don't care about anything except what they pay, and when you ask for fees for the services you provide some of them act like you're holding them at gunpoint. It's a tough crowd, and it's actually an area where the people tend to be rather wealthy, so I get a little put-off when a person making 6 digits a year tries to finagle a bunch of free training sessions, or free months on their gym membership, as if *I* don't have to eat or anything. But I can deal with that, because I work with so many motivated, hard-working people that a few stingy, semi-lazy types can't ruin it for me.

I do get to meet and work with lots of interesting people, some of them for years at a time, and some of them even bring me gifts and cards around the holidays to say thanks for working with them. That's a huge difference from when I used to move furniture for a living, having straight-up rich people not even offer me a glass of water after I lugged their sleeper sofa up 3 flights of stairs in the middle of July. I hated that job because I knew I was doing something anybody could do, but now people tell me every day that I've helped them make their lives better, and I can't help but get off on that.

Plus, I get to work out for free every day, which was my ulterior motive all along. :P

That's what pays the bills, but I'm also a professional wrestler on weekends, mostly for thrills and supplemental income. I do call it my "second job", but it doesn't really cover much more than the expenses it takes to be involved.

I'm a copywriter/editor. I currently work for a company that sells products targeted at the early education market. We produce printed catalogs throughout the year that I write copy for, as well as additional copy for our websites and various marketing materials.

I also do occasional freelance website design.

Seriously though, I'm a licensed contractor. I opened my own business...I think two years ago now? It's incredibly fulfilling and I really enjoy it, but it's also tiring. Thankfully I can make my own hours now and kind of do what I want, so I can take some time off when I feel too worn out.

You'd be the type of person that I would normally speak with if your company was a client.
