1988 Gags, Jokes and Crazy Weapons #2

Hello Dromers, in the early going of the Tmnt original toyline this second set of accessories came out.

Toycard art was nice, although, like I said in the 1988 Gags, Jokes and Crazy Weapons #1 thread http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=42598 it would be pretty much the same card used for all the three sets, We can forgive Playmates for that, it was the first year after all.

The accessories included this time were a garbage can shield, a pizza flyer, a sewer slingshot ( in the case of this last one, Was Mikey a Dennis the Menace 2.0 or Bart Simpson ancestor? Lol) and a city communicator

Plus a retromutagen suirter ( a liquid that stains and the vanishes in seconds) and the second National Turtle Quizjokebook.

I still prefer the first set over the second, but it wasn´t that bad either. I think it´s a nice addition to the Tmnt universe and any could have been featured on the original Tv show. I said it again If you are looking for something still cheap and vintage, go for them.

Here´s a good review on youtube of the three sets

Anyone knows if there was a Tv commercial for these sets?
and finally here is featured in the 1988 playmates toy catalog (Photo Courtesy of Tuboloso)

What do you think about this second set? Do you got it? Any memories you wanna share from where you bought and saw it the very first time? Anyone used the retromutagen squirter on someone?

Hope you liked and thanks for reading.

This set was the rarest, I think. Set 1 was very common in those days. Even today, it is a lot harder to find this set complete on-line. The Retromutagen squirter has probably transformed from the color red to brown. I doubt many kids kept the bottle around. I'm sure someone has this carded. These never sold well. Stores ordered a lot of them.

The bottle is hard to find all by itself.

There was a guy on Ebay last year selling all 3 sets MOC in many auctions. Apparently he hoarded them when they came out or something? They were about $25-30 per auction if I remember right. Glad I picked up a set. Now, all the ones on ebay are back up to being expensive.

Man, a slingshot was the special weapon? Eh...

But did it actually work? That might have actually been fun to sling little pebbles across the room.

To me this was the worst (or the least fun/interesting) set.

Man, I LOVE this design for the nameless Two-Headed Mutant!

I combines two of the nameless punks in Rocksteady & Bebop's original gang, making me wonder if Playmates thought about using that design for a potential new character. Looks like the Mohawk guy with the metal straps got mutated with a Fish [EDIT: oh, maybe it's actually a lizard or snake] and the dopey looking guy in the Andy Capp hat & 50s leather jacket got mixed with an ant eater or something!

No, unfortunately, the slingshot does not work. It is entirely made of plastic.

There were plenty of these in stores when they were new. I think even a TMNT whistle from K-Mart was a few coins cheaper than these sets. Nowadays, they go for a lot. There are many reasons for that. They were some of the earliest pieces to the line. Every major toyline created in the 80's had a good accessory pack. Completist must own every jokebook, so these sets are a must have. These sets do not turn up easily at Flea Markets and Tag sales.

The radio from the first set probably looks nice with Breakfightin' Raphael. I can only imagine, sadly.
