I hate it when the turtles and people actually refer to them as TMNT

A minor nitpick and pet peeve of mine but I really hate it when in universe people refer them as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I mean I'm okay with ninja turtles but the former really annoys me, it is sort of like people in unverse calling Dennis the Menace or Calling Orel Moral Orel, I'm I alone on this or do some people feel the same

Shark_Blade 06-25-2013 10:09 AM

...okay.

Doesnt bug me at all tbh.

^ He took my answer. :tgrumble:

Why would this bug you? They are the TMNT, and that's what we refer to them as, though I also say Ninja Turtles at times for people who may not be familiar with them. I don't care what people call them.

slashpieturtlemix 06-25-2013 04:41 PM

I am more bothered when I hear the turtles refer to themselves as that in the cartoons. But they usually make up for it with either sexy / sexual hints with April (80s version) or just flat out fighting in the 2003 one.

Jester 06-25-2013 04:46 PM

I think the only time it bothered me was in the 4Kids series when Mikey used the acronym, "TMNT: What you get is what you see!"

Although....the whole bit in Turtles III ("We're Turtles, friend." "Of the Teenage Mutant Ninja variety, Sleeze Ball.") is kinda cringe worthy.

gobo 06-25-2013 04:48 PM

I seem to recall having a similar complaint about another show or a comic when I was a kid because it seemed they just had no reason at all to call themselves the goofy title of the show/book. But, I never had a problem with "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles".

DonatelloNinja82 06-25-2013 05:13 PM

I dont have a huge problem with it. To each their own.

Slade 06-25-2013 06:56 PM

Together they are the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(in my Splinter voice)

That line is the only time it ever bothered me.

MsMarvelDuckie 06-25-2013 07:11 PM

I must be in the minority on this one. I actually liked when Mikey used that line in 2K3, and even the quip in TMNT III. It's one of those rare instances when the characters make light of themselves in an ALMOST fourth-wall break. I find it funny that they might actually refer to themselves that way.

Slap-Happy 06-25-2013 07:18 PM

It always bothers me. It makes no sense, which is saying something, considering it's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Zulithe 06-25-2013 09:30 PM

I understand where you are coming from. I know *why* it happens (it's for effect or to inform the reader/watcher or, worse case scenario, simply bad writing) but it's off-putting. In-universe it would be overly explanatory and cumbersome for anyone to refer to them that way :P It's a great title for a property but that's as far as it goes.

Wouldn't most people just refer to them as "the turtles", that's more than enough detail for anyone to know who they're talking about

Luckyday 06-25-2013 11:07 PM

It only bothers me when the main four or anyone within the show does it unless they doing it on purpose as a little tongue in cheek.

Genesis 06-26-2013 04:29 AM

I guess I understand where you're coming from, but I totally disagree. They never go overboard with saying the full title all the time, so it never has the chance to grate on my patience.

My favourite use of it is in TMNT (Vol. 1) #6, when the Triceraton announcers introduce the Turtles as the next opponent for the Triceraton All-Stars.

InsaneZane 06-28-2013 10:56 AM

Yeah everyone in-universe usually just calls them "The Turtles"
I like in the OT when Shredder calls them, "Hamato Yoshi's Turtles" It kind of shows that he was aware of their existance before mutation, which I think is kind of cool if he had them as pets, but in OT he finds them upon mutation so I guess that line doesnt make too much since.

I never even thought of it before. Probably because it only happens few and far between, but it does interrupt the realism of any situation when someone refers to them by their "Title name". Even though it's the Title of the whole franchise... and btw when Mikey shouts out the initials in 2k3, I think I speak for everyone when I say all I could think was "Shut Up! Mikey!" or maybe even what Raph says right after that: "Seriously, You're only embarrassing yourself." Truer words could not be spoken, Raph.

BubblyShell22 06-28-2013 11:02 AM

I do like in the Nick version when Raph says, "We're not kung-fu frogs. We're Ninja Turtles." He didn't say the whole name, but I really enjoyed how he said the line to Vic. It was awesome.

In the OT, Hamato Yoshi had the turtles as pets before they mutated. They fell on top of him through a sewer grate.

Coola Yagami 06-28-2013 11:30 PM

It bugs me sometimes when humans say it in the 80's cause you wonder how they even know they're called the 'teenage mutant ninja turtles' and not just 'the turtles' or whatever. I remember April called them that once in the 5-ep premiere, but I'm not sure if she called them that constantly.
