Why 50 Foot Irma?

I'm rewatching the original Turtles cartoon and I've always wondered why they chose Irma to be the one to grow to 50 feet and not April, who is more of a main character.

It might be because Irma is so clumsy, so having her become a giant is easier to play for laughs. April is the more confident one, so maybe the writers wouldn't think a 50 foot April would be as much fun. I could see April thinking that being someone who grew to 50 feet would be a great story for her career.

Probably for the comedy, her crashing around is more entertaining. Exocet the while ice cream bit, that was a bit too silly for me personally.

I think it's also better for parody. The original 50 foot woman was a red head with giant boobs. April is too obvious.

This has been up before. April's too well-known from TV.

I remember an old British TV show, The Goodies, where they accidentally feed a kitten with mean treated with growth formula, and the kitten grows into a giant and terrorizes the city. My favorite part is where a news reporter is on the street telling what is happening-and a kitten's giant paw steps on him, squishing him.

Yeah, that makes sense, but when did making sense ever stop the 80's cartoon? Crazy stuff happens all the time in the NYC of the cartoon. I think the public that sees mutants and robots and laser beams would eventually get over seeing an overgrown reporter.

True but even then it makes more sense than to have the city somehow forget/forgive a well-known tv news reporter for terrorizing their city. Irma is a nobody in the grand scheme of things. Noone's gonna come after her or say 'holy crap, you're that giant lady that was attacking the city' the next day.

Because Irma's a natural klutz, so it works better for her. :)

Probably this. I love when the OT writers use their heads. Sadly, that didn't happen much in S3.

That was Michael Aspel, a fairly well known TV interviewer and presenter at the time.

Watch out... Kitten Kong! Here comes... Kitten Kong!

The lols.

Seriously, that's the reason. Which character would be funny at 50 Feet....klutzy Irma.

There's also a Duck Tales episode, also dated late 1980's-early 1990's where one little duck girl who lives in that big house is temporary turned into a giant.

Stingray69 08-25-2013 05:24 PM

I always liked the episodes where she was a main focus. So I never really thought why not April. All though now that's its brought up a 50 foot April would be awesome.

Nameless 08-25-2013 05:40 PM

as its been said Irma is a klutz. and doesn't really listen or think clearly sometimes. If April was the one that grew she would have just sat down somewhere out of the way where no one would see her, as she is self conscience, and wait.

Mr._Mutant_Man 08-25-2013 09:35 PM

Yeah, for April to cause any chaos as a giant, the transformation would have to alter her personality like turning into a cat did.

I think the Irma being on a diet thing could have switched to April, since April is the one on TV, could be concerned about the camera "adding some pounds", and she demonstrated some vanity when she called herself a "28 year old hag". Once again though, wouldn't be as amusing since April would likely have the discipline to stay on a diet.

April is just one of those girls who can eat anything and not gain a pound.

"Gosh I grew 50 foot tall, I'll be the scoop of the century!"

Combatland

Combatland and Turtlemaniac are some of Irma's stronger episodes.
