William Fichtner: New TMNT Movie Will Look Awesome

By DAVID WEINER

December 13, 2013

Elysium star William Fichtner takes on the villainous role of The Shredder in the upcoming reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the versatile character actor puts a few Internet rumors about the film to rest, saying with a laugh to ETonline, "I can tell you this much: There's an April, there's a Shredder, there are four Turtles. What else do you need? Come on!"

Fans were seriously upset when Michael Bay, who is producing the movie, announced back in 2012 that the title characters would be from an alien race, and that the film's title would simply be called Ninja Turtles. He subsequently clarified his statements after there was such a huge fan backlash, telling everyone they needed to " take a breath, and chill -- they have not read the script," and the title has been restored to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

"Listen, rumor had it that people were up in arms with a few things about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," said an amused Fichtner. "I can tell you this much: The experience for me was really cool. I have nieces and nephews that grew up in the '80s, and if you were a kid, then that's what the Turtles were. But what I didn't realize when I started working on the film is how big that fan base still is. It's really huge, and … I get why Michael would want to produce a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. You've got an audience that was there, but also, I think, kids are ready to see something like this again."

Asked how much the new TMNT story draws on the characters' comic book roots, Fichtner replies, "There's people who could speak to that better than I. You know, I really wasn't a Turtle aficionado and knew all of the backstory. There are some people that know all of the backstory, and that's one of the wonderful things about doing what I do, and sometimes playing a role like this. … For me, I want to find, 'What do you want to do with it now? Who is this guy to you right now? Because I'll tell you who this guy is to me.' And it's finding that collaboration that's exciting about working on this.

"But I will say this much: We've supplied the character of Eric Sachs (aka Shredder) with an awesome time, and with an awful lot of great twists and turns for a guy. But more importantly, I don't think that any version that I've ever seen of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles got you ready for what this one is. This is a whole new deal. This is a whole new ballgame. These turtles are unlike anything you've ever seen. They're crazy, it's freaky, it's live-action, and it's going to look awesome. I love Jonathan Liebesman, who directed it. I really felt that he got an amazing handle on what it was and what he wanted, and we'll see. August 8, next year. Can't wait!"

And, of course, there was plenty of warm pizza on the set? "That's right!" Fichtner replies enthusiastically.

Oh great, this means either they will look good, or extremely hideous and terrible

I am still enraged that Shredder is now a white man named Eric Sachs.

Especially since Karai is apparently still Japanese. Why white Shredder?

Jester 12-13-2013 03:16 PM

Some have postulated that as leader of the Japanese Foot, she'll actually be Sachs' boss for once.

Wasn't that always the case?

It's a given Michael Bay films pack a punch in the visual department, why did he have to tell us?

Powder 12-13-2013 06:18 PM

Short of the white washing and obvious Fred Wolf influence, I'm totally ready for something radically new. At least it's gonna look good.

It's one thing to be coy about something like Godzilla -- and even the teaser from the other day gave us a decent glimpse of what he'll look like, if only brief and obscured with a cloud of smoke -- but with superhero films, I don't think that's necessarily a great idea, at least with the heroes, because you want to know what the heroes look like. We're still a little ways away from the film's release, but it is getting to be time for them to really start selling this film, and it's definitely time for them to show us what these guys look like.

Balls to THAT.

Uh, that would actually be super-duper welcome at this point. Karai being demoted to Shredder's lackey/relative in versions outside of Mirage has been a really disappointing trend.

I don't much care for Karai.

I prefer Shredder.

While I am thankful for this bit of info, I have to say this: are you guys seriously going through all of this again? Haven't you regurgitated these same responses to Fichtner and others saying almost the exact same thing? Don't we have anything new to say or at least the ability to refrain from verbatim replies to the same info? I'm sorry to rant, but I'm just feeling annoyed. Unleash your anger on me now.

I wish people would calm down about William Fichtner playing Shredder, I'm not happy about it myself (I'm more pissed off that black actors are playing Jonny and Susan Storm in the Fantastic 4 reboot) but i'm keeping open minded about this and it could turn out to be a twist.

William Fichtner might not be playing Shredder (he probably got told to tell everyone he's playing Shredder) and the real actor is kept a secret, Paramount did remove a photo of Shredder on set a few months back.

Shredder could the IDW version that he's reincarnated.

Maybe there are going to be two Shredder's in the movie and he's playing the fake one.

I personally have accepted the fact that this movie is going to be okay at best. So I've decided to judge it as a standalone movie that's entertaining if nothing else.

Well there's not really anything new to say. Every person involved in this has stated that it's going to have amazing visuals and special effects and it's very much a big Michael Bay affair. To be honest I'd argue most of us knew this from the beginning anyway.

The suggestion that hardly anyone involved can even be bothered to even skim through any material about the franchise and the characters they're playing and treat the idea that it might be a good idea as absurd has been put forward by the actors and producer many times before. Again I'd argue we already knew that before anything like was ever voiced.

When they say or show us something NEW then maybe we'll have something new to say. Of course the likelihood that it will be something that will get us talking positively isn't very good though.

You're delving way too far into this and grasping for straws.

The movie is what it is. Ill judge it after the credits roll.

It's gonna suck... so I'll get a front row seat to see how much it will suck.

IMO Karai shouldn't even be in this. She just doesn't work while Shredder is still alive, without being demoted to being a lacky or a relative. I doubt the two even met in Mirage.

TMNT unlike anything we ever seen before... probably cause they'll be wearing that dumbass armor we heard about. And cuz they'll have the Micheal Bay sense of humor with masturbation jokes, special brownies and comments about which one will nail April first.

And... why did they suddenly turn Sue and Johnny Storm black....? Look I get it. These comics are way old when back then everyone was white.... but like... that's just the way it was back then and those characters continue to exist today. Either do em right or don't do em at all. Or go all the way and bring us a black Superman and a Mexican Batman. Noone knew much about Kingpin, Nick Fury or Electro before they got 'blackwashed???' so I guess people don't make such a big deal... but if you really wanna make a statement about equality and all that, change the race of the MAIN CHARACTERS. If anyone whines about 'but Spider-Man is supposed to be white' you can shut up and tell them 'so is Electro, what's your point?'

I mean the fake villain thing has been done in comic book movies like Batman Begins and Iron Man 3 so it's possible.
