Free Comic Book Day 2014

Figured I start the chat early on in the year. Feel free to post any info, thoughts, pics, whateverisms that pertain to FCBD.

I myself will be at the Jetpack/Shellback event/s this year. FCBD 2013 at Jetpack was the catalyst for me getting back into comic culture as I have.

Sooo.... What are you doing, where are you going, how do you envision May 3 2014?

And for a treat, IDW has delivered something nice for all you Eastman fans. Kevin will be the cover artist for their "silver" sponsered book "V WARS" debuting this year. Pretty snazzy cover IMO

Used to love FCBD, but all of my nearest comic shops just barley do it anymore. I mean, they still have the free comics, but no where near as much as they used to. My first time going a few years back, they had stacks among stacks of about every free comic that was out for that year. The last time I went, they had a small table with about 10-13 different comics...:ohwell:

I wish we had that the one comic shop we had moved town so no longer have a comic shop I have to order em online now. They don't do the fcbd for online orders.

Fingers crossed for NH :)

I don't really support free comic book day. It sounded like a great thing, and nice to bring in new blood to support comics, but then I found out out that yes, it's many freebies are given out to customers BUT...Comic shops still have to pay for everything they give out. It's Free in name only. They still have to "pay to play" so to speak.

And in small towns similar to the one in which I live, that isn't really beneficial to the the local comic shop. As a matter of fact, ours only participated in the first few. They now longer do.

So while I like the idea and concept of Free Comic book Day,
I can't get behind it.

I'm going to Shellback and Jet Pack. I'll look for my fellow dromers.

While comic shops do have to pay for the books, it's a low cost, like $.10 or so per book (that was awhile ago - it might be higher now). Of course, that cost adds up if you order a bunch of them.

I've run into the same thing being in a small town. There was a period of a couple years where the only shop didn't do it, but now we have a slightly bigger shop that does. However, it's not the huge event that larger retailers make it into and your pick of comics is limited. The return for the larger shops is getting people in the doors and spending money on other stuff.

But all that said, I don't see it as a reason to actually not support FCBD. If a store is participating, they want you to come visit and get comics. If you feel guilty about it, slip them a few extra bucks, or just buy something else.

I have a box at my local shop, so I'm not amongst the target demographic for FCBD (it's to attract new customers, while I'm already a guaranteed sale).

That said, since my shop doesn't set aside FCBD books (even for subscribers), I do have to show up on the day if I want anything. They don't get the full gold and silver spread at my shop, but I can usually get what I'm after.

No TMNT titles this year, though, which is a bummer.

I always hear about FCBD, never been to one. My closest comic book shop is maybe 90 miles away.

Funny how now everyone is showing up at Jetpack where M. Banshee and I were the only 2 NH residents/Drome members that was present in 2009/10 lol.

While it may not work out for every shop, I don't think the problem is with how FCBD is executed. As Roseangelo stated, the shops pay a small amount (I actually heard it was 5 cents per comic, but maybe it was raised to 10 or more now), and I assume that's to cover the printing costs. It's not unreasonable to ask the shops to contribute since the comics need to be paid for somehow. It's essentially cost for advertising since the goal is to get people into the comic store, and overall it seems like it works. If enough people don't buy comics when they come in for free comics for a shop to continue participating, I don't think that's the fault of FCBD. Just make sure you encourage everyone to support the shop by buying something.

That was a lot of fun. :) I got to go last year and meet Michelle Ivey and Kevin Eastman, but this year I'm not sure if I'll be able to go. I'd LIKE to, it just depends on work... I would Love to meet other drome members.

Jeff 03-05-2014 12:08 AM

Anyone know if Peter Laird will be appearing anywhere on FCBD?

Mayhem 03-05-2014 05:45 AM

Erm... Peter will be at Jetpack.
