Casey: "Not bad for an AMPHIBIAN"

Is that a reference to OT where the turtles declared themselves as amphibians? (I think it's Leo saying along the line of "And don't forget, we're amphibians!"

Or is Casey just plain sucks at school that he couldn't differentiate between amphibian and reptile? Or was that just a (really) poor attempt at sarcasm?

Turtles are reptiles of the order Chelonii or Testudines characterised by a special bony or cartilaginous shell developed from their ribs and acting as a shield.Turtle may refer to the chelonian order as a whole (American English) or to fresh-water and sea-dwelling chelonians (British English).

Wikipedia saving lives again.:D

I think it was Nick poking fun at how stupid Casey is. I'm sure the writers know the turtles are reptiles.

I do remember there was one episode in the OT that Leo did say that. (I believe it was the episode with the Robot Cop)

I think Casey was just making fun of him, he did call them reptiles when they found him in the lair earlier in the episode.

BubblyShell22 02-07-2014 03:38 PM

It may have been Casey's mistake or he was making a joke. I know Shredder in the original cartoon always referred to them as reptiles, and they would often say they were amphibians.

I'd guess a combination of riffing on past mistakes and Casey not being the brightest bulb.

I hope that's the case, anyway. It should be pretty hard to make that mistake after all these years, especially if you're an adult writer.

I'm rewatching the episode now, and when the turtles found him in the lair, he said "let go of me you stupid reptiles." So he knew turtles were reptiles earlier in the episode. I think he was just joking.

If you look at some of Peter Laird's "Blasts from the Past" episode comments, you'll see the 4Kids writers didn't. :P

I kinda wish that Raph would retort with "And you're too shabby yourself, MONKEY"

It would somehow cause controversy with parents.

But he not a monkey. Thats the whole point.

IIRC, Shredder was the main one in the OT who called them amphibians, and it was always as an insult. Some of the dumber mob guys and one-off villains did it too, but I seem to recall the turtles always corrected them on it whenever it happened. Unless it was Shredder, and then they just gave up after the first few times he did it. But I don't recall Leo or any of the others ever saying it themselves. Amphibi-OUS, maybe, but amphibi-ANS? Just doesn't sound like a mistake he/they would make.

DonatelloNinja82 02-16-2014 05:13 PM

Yah... it happened all the time in the OT...used to bug me...

Though apparently they don't know that there's no DNA in hair.
