So what does a REAL New York City sewer look like, anyway?

We know that in TMNT 1 they had to fly to the U.K. to get shots of sort of the big, overblown tunnels and such you or I would think about in terms of what a sewer would look like... but what does an actual NYC sewer look like?

If you think UK sewers are big, wait until you see Japan's.

Here it is, direct from the Bronx:

Check this link out, some pretty cool stuff here:

Note that there are two main types of sewers: Sanitary Sewers (the small types that are most inaccessible) and Storm Drains (with water along the middle and older systems consist of canals, similar to what you see in some OT episodes). Las Vegas' is known for graffiti and hobos and IMO would be a cool idea if they made a Turtles' story there.

Anyone know where Mike Rowe filmed the Dirty Jobs sewer episode?

Large underground tunnels have existed as long as cities have-not only for sewage or storm water, but for transport and other utilitarian reasons as well. Have a large population in a small area, and you're going to need ways to bring in enough water, as well as dispose of sewage. Chicago itself once utilized a tunnel system so that underground trains could bring coal to the various large buildings.

Weren't all of the sewer shots in the first film shot on soundstages at the DEG lot in Wilmington?

...or are you referring to some sort of pre-production research into larger tunnels?

They actually don't look too far off from what we see in various incarnations of TMNT.

And don't forget about the abandoned subway stations and tunnels.

It depends where you are in NY. The 5 boroughs (Manhattan, The Bronx, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens) and the western most parts of Long Island (Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau) have both expanded tunnel passages and smaller sewer systems. As far as the first TMNT film goes, that sewer set closely resembled the Lower East Side sewers- dirty, dank, and cramped.

Most of those "elegant" looking tunnels back home in New York are abandoned now. People stopped using them because it was quicker to just take the express trains instead and they where closer. It's a shame people don't get to see those tunnels as often. I remember always taking the F train on 179th.

I've seen some of these photos when I was doing some research for a fic. Just wanted to get a feel for the REAL NYC sewers and how they work. It was interesting and enlightening stuff!

Wildcat 03-10-2014 12:24 AM

I imagine a river of fecal matter and other disgusting things

Don't quote me on that. Never been to NY...or any sewer.

Leo656 03-10-2014 08:58 AM

Without ever having gone down into a sewer, I can still say that your description of New York itself is fairly accurate. :P

this would be my preference of the turtle lairs ;)

I saw this video "Undercity" when it was released it is part of the subway and has some under ground locations as well as a bridge they climb. It is quite cool actually there is a section that is closed off and not used that looks a lot like the turtle lair in TMNT II. I just started watching it again, they show New Yorks first sewer as well thought I'd add that.

I Love seeing these pictures. The second TMNT movie used a sewer very similar in style with the stained glass. Beautiful to look at...
