How many languages do you speak?

Just curious, how many languages do you speak/know? Are you learning any?

I'm currently learning Irish and of course, my main language is English.

shuriken 03-31-2014 05:23 PM

English and Spanish, a tiny bit of Italian and trying to learn German.

I speak and write Norwegian and English fluently. I did take a course in Japanese, but with barely anyone to keep it up with, I've basically fallen off. I also had Norse during school, but that have not stuck, sadly.

I do understand and can read Danish and Swedish since the Scandinavian languages are more or less almost the same.

Now, Norwegian is actually just dialects, and are contained in two written languages, Bookspeak and New Norwegian. Book speak is basically Danish with hard consonants and New Norwegian was made up by a dude cherry picking words that "sounded Norwegian", it was planned in the 50's to merge the languages to True Norwegian, but that never happened.

Just English and a little Spanish (I learned it by watching Dora the Explorer).

RaphAndDonnie 03-31-2014 06:09 PM

I'm fluent in English, as it's my first language, and am learning Finnish. The hardest part about it is that there are no articles so you just add different ending onto words. Also, the pronounciations! :o

SQL
Bash
Vb

C#.net
Asp.net
Vb.net
Java
... English...

Does that count?

Dirty Blond 03-31-2014 07:33 PM

I can get by in French, but I don't consider myself fluent.

CyberCubed 03-31-2014 07:55 PM

English, the only one you really need to know.

[Except if you work in a job with non-English speakers or visit another country without English-speakers or if you don't live in an English speaking country...........

English, pretty much nothing else. Did learn some French in School, but haven't bothered with it after I left.

Mzx10484 04-01-2014 05:56 AM

German and English, and started to learn the Norwegian language since I was there for 5 Months.

Kanon 04-01-2014 05:56 AM

German (of course :D), English and a very little bit of french (from school)

AT-Man 04-01-2014 07:12 AM

Finnish is my native and I think I'm pretty good in English. I understand Swedish better than speak or write, and same with German. I have also taken a few Japanese classes a couple of years ago.

Swedish, because, duh... Jag pratar svenska!
English, fluently except when I'm super tired, but then again, my Swedish also sucks when I'm super tired, so... :p
I used to know some basic French, but that's long gone. Je ne parlez pas Francais... something or other... I dunno...
I understand written and most spoken Danish. I understand written Norwegian, but can't for the life of me understand it when spoken.

Learning Korean right now, but I'm still a beginner. 한국어... something... I don't know what "I Know Korean" is in Korean... :p

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA................ HAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I think there are six languages you need to know if you actually wanna get around most places... I read about this, if I remember them correctly, they are Arabic, English, French, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish... Everyone obviously doesn't have these languages as native languages, but most of the world understands at least one of these languages. If I remember correctly.

plastroncafe 04-01-2014 11:36 AM

English, 'Merican, and High-School level Spanish.

Iroh 04-01-2014 01:14 PM

As a linguist, I know that Standard English is the most used language in the business world. Every functioning country in the world has to learn Standard English according to their school curriculum. This English curriculum is referred to as a term called, "Globish." Foreigners are learning English so that they can receive citizenship and a great paying job as a bilingual/multilingual candidate. For Americans, such as myself, it is very important to know many languages(Spanish, English, Japanese, Mandarin, French) so YOU can get that job as being a bilingual/multilingual candidate. Regardless of your discipline of study, having a foreign language or two will guarantee a career for you. You will be hired for jobs that you didn't even study for in college. I know this too well because it has happened to me.:twink::tcool:
