The Subaru Thread

Hello Everyone!

I was curious to see if there were any Subaru car owners or fans on the 'Drome here? I'm on my second Subaru now, and I absolutely love it! When my lease is up, I plan on trading my Subaru Legacy in for a 2014. I just love they way they handle, drive, and perform overall. And of course, you can't beat their all-wheel-drive. I live in New England, so we get quite a bit of snow and ice during the winter, and therefore makes Subaru an ideal car choice.

So, are there any Subaru fans? If so, which Subaru do you love most or drive? How do you all feel about the 2014 and new 2015 models coming out?
Discuss. :tgrin:

Subaru Boxer engine is an amazingly reliable engine and delivers great performance. Especially the Subaru Impreza STI These Subarus are AWD and Turbocharged making them fun to drive in the summer and safe in the winter My dad has a forester and has been a reliable car.
While Subaru is not my first choice of car it is one of the Best automakers, better than honda or toyota imo.

I almost bought one before I ended up getting a Honda Civic. Reason: I heard Subarus were a maintenance nightmare.

Yeah, the Boxer engine has got to be one of the best out there, very reliable. My sister's boyfriend has an '06 STI, and loves it (it's just a gas guzzler, lol). My aunt has a Forester, I think it's her 4th one now haha. I used to absolutely love Hondas and Toyotas, and then Subaru happened, haha.

My '98 Subaru Legacy GT had a few maintenance issues, and they were expensive to fix. Although so far I've had no problems with my 2011 Legacy. Nevertheless, Hondas are extremely reliable and long-lasting. The new Civics get over 40 mpg highway I believe.

I bought a 2007 Legacy last year, couldn't be happier with it. AWD was a lifesaver this winter, nice to know if you get stuck on a hill in traffic you're not totally screwed. My mom had a Brat in college, still talks about it lol.

The prevailing maintenance issue with Subies seems to be the timing belts...replace them every 90k or so, even if it's preemptive. Replacing them sucks (around $600 for all of them) but if you bend your valves it'll be $2000 or more to repair. In the long run it's definitely worth it. Really, this should apply to any car with VVT, but Subaru's are "notorious" for the timing belts crapping out at 100k.

Other than that, keep up with the basics (fluids, brakes etc.) and you should be fine.

Most manufactures recommend timing belt replacement at 60k and few replace at 90k. 90k timing belt is impressive, just go by what the manufacture recommends.

Also you can save a lot of money by doing the work yourself. Instead of a $600 timing job it will only be a $80-120 also you can get you car on the road faster than a dealer could IF they are busy.
Dont do a timing belt if you have not been properly trained or researched. :D

Yeah, should've mentioned that

Getting 90k out of the timing belts in a late model isn't that uncommon. Older/used 60k absolutely.

My dad used to have a subaru impreza. The school runs increased my street cred considerably.
