Which version of a character trumps?
With all the different versions of the TMNT over the years
MIRAGE Wolf Toon Archie Comics 1990 Movie 2003 Toon 2007 TMNT Nick Toon which version of each character sticks in your head the most? Which voice do you tend to imagine the character has? Is ninja master Hamato Yoshi a mutant rat nicknamed Splinter, or is Splinter a mutant rat who was once the pet of a ninja master named Hamato Yoshi? Is April a newscaster or a research assistant? Is Rat King a dark specter monster, or some weirdo thief living in the sewers? Does Slash become a hero who fights alongside the turtles or does he become a space traveling villain? |
You missed 2003 series from your list.
^^That's the one that sticks in my head the most. |
Thank you I edited my original post. But would you blanket sweep the whole series as being the best including every character? I really enjoy everything I have sen from that series but for example I thought it was the worst version of Rat King. I didn't make a poll for this thread so people would have to consider all the different sources of TMNT to contrast and compare each version of each character and not an entire series.
Here are some of my favorites for example Leonardo = MIRAGE with Cam Clarke voice Donatello = 1990 Movie with Corey Feldman voice Michelangelo = MIRAGE with Robbie Rist voice Raphael = 2003 Toon with Josh Pias voice Splinter = 1990 movie 100% I have never loved a puppet as much as 1990 Splinter and can't help but cry every time I see the campfire scene Shredder = MIRAGE voice of James Avery Rat King = Archie comics with toon voice Slash = Archie ......... so sad, so heroic. voice of Corey Feldman |

For individual turtles, Mikey would probably be the one I would change. I would change Mikey to 2012 Season 1 Mikey, maybe Donnie as well. Leo and Raph stay as 2003. I would say that in terms of Splinter, 2012 is probably my favorite Shredder, without a doubt is 2003. His voice alone beats all the others. April and casey definitely 2003, but I quite like the idea of April being the Turtles age as well. As for Rat king, I can't really say much about Rat king as he was only in the series for one episode, and he was extremely downplayed. they gave him absoutly no character development So in summary, it's about 75-80% 2003 series. |
In my humble opinion no version of the TMNT trumps another.

I associate the 2k3 voices with all of the turtles, but the 1990 film's voice for Splinter and the 87 voice for April. As for characterizations, I think I like 1990 Leonardo the most, but 2k3 for everybody else.
Splinter is most definitely Hamato Yoshi's pet rat that mutated into his anthropomorphic form; I really can't stand it when Hamato Yoshi transforms into Splinter, as it makes the mutagen's properties inconsistent and it's kinda dumb since it isn't what Mirage originally did with the character anyway. April's occupation is something I'm more loose with, as I'm pretty loose with her characterization anyway. I do think the reporter occupation was really cute and fit well with the turtles, but her backstory with Stockman in 2k3 and Mirage really made the character feel more compelling to me. I don't care so much about her occupation as I do her personality and character. In every continuity she has the potential to be really interesting; in some, they take advantage of this and make her really cool, but in others, it falls flat. |
I haven't read any of the comics sadly, as I don't know where to start. But I have seen most of the other media.
Leo: 2012 think this is the best version yet, and Jason Biggs' voice is great for it Raph: 2012 as well, 2003 and 2007 just had too deep of a voice for him but Sean astins fits perfectly. Donnie: 2003, like how he's very passive and calm, and I don't know the voice actor but he's good. Although, my favorite voice for him is actually the OotS video game Donnie. Mikey: 2007 movie. 2003 and 2012 are ok, just really liked his voice and behavior in the movie. Karai: 2012 100% Kelly does a great voice for her and that character is so developed April: 2012, probably not most peoples, but I just like the whole same age as the turtles, and like how they're handling her fighting ability, also voice fits. Casey: 2012 again. I hated every other version of Casey there was. Always too stupid and incapable. Most of the time in 2003 he would barely do anything in a fight. 2012 he looks sweet, and yeah he's not the brightest, but he contributes more than just swinging a hockey stick. And josh pecks voice fits surprisingly well. Splinter: another 2012, like the more able splinter and like how he was human. I always hated how some incarnations had him learning ninjutsu while he was a rat, I know we're talking about mutant turtles, but it just seemed so impossible. And great voice for him too. Shredder: a final 2012. Like how his whole feud is with splinter and not the turtles. I remember in a 2003 episode, he was brought splinter and was pissed because it wasn't the turtles. Their whole love triangle makes it seem more intense. Also his design is sweet, especially his blades, and the deep voice for him is incredible. Bonus: not and alien Obviously I'm a big fan of 2012, I just feel they nailed most characters. |
Leo - 2k3. Serious and tough.
Don - OT. He always had so many wacky gadgets Raph - Nick. Seems more well rounded than the other versions. Mike - OT. Was fun, not stupid, but still knew how to be serious and focused. Splinter - Yoshi turned into a rat. A rat learning martial arts watching his owner is just too silly for me. April - OT. Just because thats what I grew up with and my favorite. Casey Jones - 90s movie. Seems like a cool guy that can hold his own. Shredder - 2k3. Just so scary and cool looking. Rat King - some weirdo in the sewer. So OT cause Ive never read the comics. |
Huh- you missed IDW. I'm really surprised you'd leave that one off the list.
As for my picks, that's fairly easy on most counts. Leonardo- 2012, but with Cam Clarke's voice. Don't know why, but his is THE definitive Leo voice for me, no matter the version. However, that said, I really like the Nick Leo's personality- for the first time, I actually like him a LOT! Donatello- 80's toon, both voice and personality. I always loved his harried, high-strung techno-geek persona, and Nick has some of that, too. However, I also love Feldman's voice, too, so that part is really sort of a toss up. Raphael- 2007 movie, but with Rob Paulson's voice. Loved them both, and ideally, I'd like to see a bit more of the snarky side of movie Raph- actually, probably closer to the second and third movie Raph. Michelangelo- This one's the easiest. I absolutely LOVE his 1990 movie version, but I also really loved the surfer voice of the 80's cartoon. Shredder- Ah, so many wonderful choices here! I'd have to go with the dangerous persona of 2003 toon (as Saki, NOT Ch'rell!) but I've ALWAYS heard James Avery's voice in my head for him!! Will seriously miss him, as that voice was such a huge part of my childhood. Alternately, perhaps the Nick version, but still with Avery's voice. I just loved it. Splinter- not sure on this one. I really like the voice for Nick's version, but my favorite persona is, of course, as Yoshi himself, from the 80's toon. I realize that both of these use that same origin, but I liked the 80's take on it, long before I knew anything about the "true" history of the comics with Tang Shen (movies aside). April- 80's, all the way, though I DO also like her in the 2003 toon. I'm honestly not sure which background I like better for her- the reporter, or the lab assistant. But since we don't know much about what she did BEFORE she became a reporter, I'd like to think she could have done both. She's certainly smart enough! Casey- this one is fairly easy- 1990/IDW. The reason for this is that these two seem the most balanced, and IDW has the best characterization I've seen yet. I picture the 1990 Casey as a slightly older and more mature version of the IDW one, so they seem to fit together for me really well. (Aside from that career-ending injury he got from Shredder in the comic....) |
Oops didnt notice the 90s movie was an option. I have to change my version of Casey Jones to that. Thats the only one though.

IDW did a genius thing my merging both origin ideas, and I can accept it because Yoshi had a past life experience as a human. Quote:

Leo: Mirage or 2k3, not sure. My favorite voice is his 2k3 one, though.
Don: 2k3 series' voice acting, my favorite version of him is the 1990 movie. Raph: OT for sure. Rob Paulsen is king. Mikey: My favorite is 2k3 Mikey, both the voice and the actual incarnation, although I love Townsend Coleman, too! Splinter: 1990 movie or 2k3 Splinter, 2k12 voice. April: I liked the first and second movies' versions of her, and the 2k12 voice is my favorite. Shredder: OT Shredder is my favorite, but I think 2k12's voice hits the mark on how I'd imagine him. I don't really think any of these "trumps" the other, I've loved all the versions of the turtles that I've seen so far! |
Leonardo: Mirage. I hear him with something close to the 4Kids voice.
Donatello: Mirage. I hear him with something close to Barry Gordon's voice from the Fred Wolf cartoon. Michelangelo: Mirage by a country mile. Something close to Robbie Rist's voice from the 1990 movie. Raphael: Mirage. I don't really have a particular voice for him. I think most of the time I picture him being a little lighter-pitched than the 1990 movie version. Splinter: Mirage by a country mile (that whole questionable morality thing). No distinct voice, something between the 1990 movie and other versions, I suppose. April: Mirage. Casey: Mirage. Karai: Mirage. Shredder: I prefer his non-character role in Mirage more, but of any actual character portrayal, I'm partial to the 1990 movie version. The others are too super-villainous, although I do enjoy Ch'rell when he's out of armor. So, almost all Mirage all the time. I do like other versions, though. |
Let's see, to be fair I haven't seen the 2003 series or had a chance to read the comics, so I'll do the best I can.
Leonardo:2012 Raphael:1987 and 2012 Donatello:1987 and 2014 Michelangelo:1987 and 2012 Splinter: 2012 April O' Neil:1990 Casey Jones:1990 and 2012 Shredder:1987 and 2012 I love all the versions of these characters I've seen these are just my most favorite, with the exeption of 2007 Leo(which I couldn't stand, he seemed like such a jerk). |
In my opinion...
Leonardo: Undecided Raphael: 2014 Movie Donatello: 2k3 Michelangelo: IDW Comics Splinter: Tie between 2k3 and IDW April O'Neil: 2k3 Casey Jones: 1990 Movie Oroku Saki/Shredder: IDW Comics Karai: 2007 Movie Baxter Stockman: 2k3 Leatherhead: 2k3 Slash: IDW Comics |
