Do you think the show is fat-shaming some of the characters?

Based on the treatment of overweight characters, such as Victor, Timothy , or Martin , do you think the show is treating overweight characters badly?

Powder 06-21-2014 08:05 PM

Can Tumblr just leave this show alone?

pennydreadful 06-21-2014 08:21 PM

... I've gotta be honest, I hadn't picked up on any vibes of that nature. :ohwell:

CyberCubed 06-21-2014 08:22 PM

What the hell is, "fat-shaming?"

Is this some bizarre underground weebo tumblr/deviantart/livejournal/4chan kind of term?

Ninjinister 06-21-2014 08:23 PM

Jesus Christ. :trolleye:

Papenbrook 06-21-2014 09:10 PM

The term "fat-shaming" means to ridicule or discriminate against someone who is overweight, obese, plus-size, etc.

I am sorry if you didn't understand.

Man, I wish.

RaphAndDonnie 06-21-2014 09:55 PM

No, not in the least.

CyberCubed 06-21-2014 09:57 PM

Truly the worst part of the Nick show isn't the show itself, its that its attracted the anime/tumblr crowd applying TVtropes and shipping to a show that barely has any.

I'm glad in the 2k3 days and the 80's cartoon days we didn't have to deal with this.

Shut up and eat another pop-tart.

Tumblr in a nutshell

Leo656 06-22-2014 12:10 AM

I don't even know what the hell Tumblr is, but I know you people consistently amuse the hell out of me.

What? No!

Timothy was treated the way he was because he was a lazy idiot. If you recall when he was first introduced by talking smack to the purple dragons the turtles thought he was awesome. They didn't have that 'oh it's a fat guy who is going to suck because he's overweight' and the whole rest of the episode, Tim was a liability, lazy, clueless, over eager and well a doofus. So of course they were going to be annoyed with him. It has nothing to do with him being treated badly for being overweight.

I'm sure his design was chubby because he was suppose to be really lazy and unmotivated to better himself. I don't think the show thought 'Fat people are lazy' but more like 'if you're lazy, you're probably going to get fat'

That's life.

People need to stop being so sensitive or politically correct. Not everything is out to get them.

This reminds me of when someone was saying the show was racist because all of the black people were thieves. (Mainly aimed at Zeck because of the way he talked) Yet, it would be fine if white people were thieves or I don't know...a Japanese guy right? It's the people that are screaming racism or shaming that are fueling the stereotypes more than the show is.

This idea of fat shaming is as stupid as freaking out over a commercial that says ''Go outside and play kids! Get in shape! Stay in shape, it's healthy for you!" and crying 'this is making fat kids feel bad that they can't go outside and play like all the thin kids in the commercial! They might have asthma or something and can't do what the commercial says to do and it makes them feel ashamed!!111'

No. Stop it.

Konchadunga 06-22-2014 01:36 AM

I really don't give a damn if it is. I am glad society looks down on a condition that is actually within most people's control and is unhealthy. Of course you shouldn't shame somebody for being born with a hunch back or a huge unsightly chin, but if they're fat, it's on them to fix that, because they can. Timothy is fat specifically because he's a loser who doesn't want to do any work, and that's a perfectly fine line of logic.

latmat 06-22-2014 01:36 AM

Never even crossed my mind once, and I am a fat dude. I would pick up on that if it was offensive I'd like to think.

Sir Malachi/Martin Milton was a fat kid if I remember correctly and I think they presented him as a nice character by the end.

I actually wish they'd bring him back in the future his mutant abilities could really come in handy against the turtles enemies. He'd be an awesome ally for them. He is a cool character with lots of potential.

The fat slobbish guy who stole the phone was probably the most offensive but that was because he was a low life. I suppose they could have made him a skinny lowlife but hey why not use a fat guy, lots of fat guys in the world. One might say it would be prejudice to have no fat characters lol...

I think they made him fat because he was suppose to be a lazy slob who sits at home in front of the T.V. all the time. Which will make you fat. He dressed that way and had the attitude of 'I'm too lazy to get up and make myself successful so I'm going to take advantage of any quick way to get rich'

Candy Kappa 06-22-2014 02:08 AM

There's not been any fat-shaming in the show.

pennydreadful 06-22-2014 03:07 AM

Personally, I'm of the view that it's what's inside that counts. :ohwell: I think you can be big and be healthy, just as you can be skinny and unhealthy. I think society's gotten a bit shallow with the obsession with body weight. It's kind of depressing, tbh.

Not wanting to start an argument or anything... but I'm sure that we have members on these boards who are all shapes and sizes. Real beauty comes from within, and a person's worth isn't determined by an arbirtary number on a scale.

There are probably some people on here who are also starting to think that I was a Care Bear in a past life...

Tumblr is a blog site, Leo, and there are lot of people who have Tumblrs.

As for fat shaming, this show isn't doing any of that. Vic was a lazy slob who took advantage of the Turtles to try and get rich and only ended up getting mutated, Timothy was a kid who just wanted to be a hero and ended up getting mutated due to his stupidity, and Martin was a guy who was innocently feeding the sparrows in his yard when he got mutated. People really need to stop acting like this show is doing things that it clearly isn't doing.
