Why did Mirage have so few mutants?
 

Not that I mind, but it's interesting how so many other versions loves to experiment with mutants, but Mirage kept it down.

Peter pretty much said he wanted to limit the amount of Mutants in the Mirage Universe to make the TMNT feel more special. It also gave them more of an isolation from the rest of the world. We got Aliens, superheroes, and satyr-sorcerers but like 6 mutants. (Not including the Mutato heads in which even Casey briefly became a mutant)

Two things:

1.) Every mutant including Bloodsucker is mutated from the Ooze, which was a basically toxic utrom trash accidently poured on animals. It wasn't anyone's intention to create mutants, so storyline-wise, it was more reasonable to go with other stuff.

2.) Mirage wasn't a promotional tool for Playmates.

Mirage wasn't in the action figure market.

Oh yeah, I somehow forgot about that second one. Although, I don't think IDW are Playmates' bitches and somehow that didn't stop them from creating a few mutants.

I ment that part about OT. The original purpose of the cartoon was (same thing with many other 80's and 90's shows) to promote the TMNT toyline of Playmates, and Playmates influenced Archie too.
IDW is different however, they're only taking what's worked before in TMNT and using it.

Btw, about the mutants in Mirage: There were only 7 of them, if you consider pure animal mutants, but there were also Radical, Complete Carnage and Shark-Worm-Shredder-whatever and those generic superheroes, and there were a lots of non-mutant anthropromorph animals, like Triceratons, Styracodons, that monkey shaman and more I can't recall. Usagi Miyamoto, Cudley and more characters are crossed over to TMNT too.
I think 4kids had less then Mirage.

I can just see a Playmates executive holding a gun to Ciro's head as he types away the scripts.

Besides the Turtles/Splinter, Mirage mutants were:

- Leatherhead
- Bloodsucker
- King Komodo (Image)

There were also characters who resembled mutants like Chote, but he was created by Savanti's magic.

There were also the mutant insects from "Wrong Turn", but they weren't anthropomorphic, similar to the 2k3 mutants.

Utroms were more responsible in Mirage, no accidents since the 80s!

All you're really doing is dressing down Mirage fans right now, you know that, right? I get that you're bitter towards 'em with your whole OT adoration thing going on, but what you're saying is unfair, biased, wrong...

Does the name Dale Evans McGillicutty (who is a mutant) ring a bell? How about the Justice Force, or Pai-Doth Noor? April the magic doodle baby?

Which characters are you talking about specifically?

A lot of the weird one-off characters from Tales probably. Like that Jewish golem, those cat creatures from the Leonardo 2-parter, etc.

Tales of the TMNT in general had a lot of weird animal or monster characters who weren't mutants but could have been.

And where have they showed up since Mirage?

That PKF is right in that Mirage has bad characters. Even some that showed up in the 2k3 show were bad, like the Justice Force and Cousin Sid.

But seriously, why are you think that Mr. Braunze is useless? He was one of the main characters in Vol.2. and heavily influenced the storyline. He worked well there. Sure, you might not like the character, and he might be a Professor X ripoff or something, but that doesn't makes him redundant.
