Celebrity discussion and bitching thread

Dave's gonna looooove this one.

So, I was thinking about how Marilyn Monroe is perceived by a lot of people to be a bimbo who shouldn't be a role model... and thought I'd discuss further.

It's worth pointing out that although she had a drug problem and emotional problems, plenty of artists, musicians and actors do. It's a sad fact that sometimes the most talented people are pretty screwed up inside.

Regardless, Marilyn Monroe did a lot more than just boff JFK - and it seems sad that a lot of her accomplishments are overlooked.

- Was one of the first three women to start her own independent production company.
- Was one of the first people to speak openly about gay rights.
- Was one of the first people to speak openly about sexual abuse (having been abused herself as a child).
- Was an advocate for the civil rights movement.
- Ella Fitzgerald (one of the greatest jazz singers of all time, and I'll fight anyone who says different) was not allowed to play at the Mocambo club (which was one of the hottest places in Hollywood during the 40s and 50s), because of her race. Marilyn was a fan of her music and supported civil rights, so she called the owner of the Mocambo and told him that if he booked Ella immediately, she would take a front table every night. The owner said yes, and Marilyn was there, front table, every night. After that, Ella never had to play in a small jazz club again.
- Had a personal library of over 500 books and rarely read fiction - she was desperate to learn and educate herself. She was very self-conscious about her education as she had only completed two years of high school (having had an arranged marriage at age 16 so that she would have somewhere to live). She made an effort to improve herself, loved learning and later enrolled in literature appreciation and art classes at the University of California. Her favorite authors included Dostoevsky, Proust,Freud, and Whitman. She attended singing lessons, dance classes,
- Supported numerous charities with both her time and money (often with anonymous donations) including the Milk Fund, the USO, March of Dimes, The Arthritis and Rheumatism Foundation, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and the Arthritis Foundation. She also headed the Committee For A Sane Nuclear Policy.
- Visited orphanages and hospitals on her own time to surprise the people there.
- Would put on a wig and glasses and walk the streets giving money to homeless people.
- She led to the overhaul of the studio system at a time when studios used to tell actors what movie they'd be in and they had zero choice or say in the matter. She was tired of being told to do "dumb blonde" roles and walked out on her contract with 20th Century Fox. This led to changes in the entire system.
- She was the first woman to get script and director approval in her movies.
- She studied with two of the most acclaimed acting teachers of all time, Michael Chekhov and Lee Strasberg of the famed Actor's Studio. Lee Strasberg, who said that she was one of his best students along with Marlon Brando.
- Refused to date people for publicity just because 20th Century Fox wanted her to.
- Revolutionized the way sex was viewed at the time. In the 50's, sex was seen as something dirty and taboo - Marilyn made it fun and arguably paved the way for the sexual revolution in the 60s.

As far as role models go... you could do worse. So I'm gonna take back what I said before - hell, I am now Team Marilyn. She certainly did more with her life than most people, let alone the current crop of celebs.

Been tried before, was locked. Hence I never bothered again.

Most celebrities are utter cvnts who have zero talent or education. There is a minority of very talented, intelligent famous people.

Overall I hate celebrity culture as a whole, rather than individual celebrities. They're just a microcosm of the wider issue.

Prowler 01-04-2015 11:10 PM

I prefer to criticize people who obsess over them rather than the celebrities themselves but it's kinda sad to be part of the same world where people like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian are famous for... nothing. Well, they're famous for their sex tapes, which is pretty sad. Not to mention they both seem to have a brain of the size of a peanut. I'd be worried if I was the father of a teenage daughter who looked up to such women.

Indeed. What about the sad Ronaldo fanboys who devote their lives to sycophantically defending him when he's criticised? As if they're his brother, and not just someone who's never even met him? Pathetic.

Or how about the wallopers who turned up at Princess Diana's funeral, crying? FFS young babies die every day and they're crying over some moronic, glod-digging 'princess' whose sum total achievement in life is spreading her legs for another talentless prick who was only where he was because he exited an aristocratic vagina.

The saddos who turned up at Billy and Kate's wedding a few years ago, fvcking amassing in front of Buckingham Palace and cheering and celebrating as if they know these trust fund babies personally.

The world is fvcking depraved.

I'm alright with celebrities. Hating them, or anything really, is a waste of energy. So is worshiping them. All in moderation.

That's actually fair. I agree, there's no point in hating most of them unless they have unwarranted egos. But, the people who worship them have problems.

Celebrities ARE needed - it's impossible to enjoy music, films, sports without those creating it becoming well-known. However, they shouldn't be treated as someone special. All they are is someone who may or may not be very talented in a certain field.

"F*** The Rock" is my official position. That's both a political AND religious statement. "F*** Dwayne."

snake 01-04-2015 11:21 PM

Celeberties? Don't care about their personal lives or anything.

pennydreadful 01-04-2015 11:23 PM

Y'know what they say, Dave... if at first you don't succeed... ;)

Pretty much this. I mean, there are some folks who I definitely dislike, say if their attitude is terrible or they're just a bad person, period, but otherwise I'd rather hold out for better discussion.

Powder: You wouldn't even consider knocking Kim Kardashian unconscious with some chloroform and then making a number of small, strategically placed superficial razor cuts all over her body, then dropping her in a bathtub full of lemon juice? The thought has NEVER crossed your mind? EVER?

Liar. You're a goddamn liar. You wanna do it just as bad as the rest of us. DO IT! DO IT!!! SHE'S NOT PEOPLE!!! :flaming::flaming::flaming:

Didn't realise you were such a merciful guy. Why so gentle? :ohwell:

Leo656 01-04-2015 11:36 PM

Wouldn't wanna break the law.

Davetello 01-04-2015 11:40 PM

So, if you aspired to be a celebrity serial killer, who would you target to get to that elusive 5? Ignoring the obvious such as criminals, royalty, despots, dictators etc.

Harold Styles
Cristiano Ronaldo
Katie Hopkins
Olly Murs
Random short straw drawing parasite from The Only Way is Essex/Geordie Shore/X Factor etc.

CaliperCat 01-04-2015 11:48 PM

If I like you, I'll listen to your music or watch your movies. If I don't, I'll avoid your work like the plague. I don't recall ever seeing a single James Franco movie because he did a few things a few years ago that rubbed me the wrong way (although maybe I should bury the hatchet, since I can no longer really remember what they were).

There are a few people I really do look up to and admire. Ben Burnley from Breaking Benjamin in an especial favorite of mine, because he's overcome some extremely horrendous habits (was a severe alcoholic for about 10 years) brought on by some mental illness, and is, from what I can tell, a pretty stand up dude. Same goes for the racers I root for: They're genuinely good people, with whom I can identify.

There's a line, though. You can admire somebody, but when they do something truly stupid, you can't just ignore it like it's nothing. There's been some celebrity types (race car drivers 98% of the time), who I really liked until they started acting like brats. Nope. Sorry. I'm a loyal person, but when I just can't justify rooting for you anymore, I'll move on.

Leo656 01-04-2015 11:48 PM

Ohhhh, we're done bitching about 'em and we're actually committing atrocities now? Sheeeeeeeeeet, that's all you had to say! I've always said, "The World Needs More Serial Killers," and separate but equal to that, I've also always said, "Anyone Who Eats Black Licorice Is A Scumbag."

The two are NOT related but are equally true and equally important.

I'd most likely be the "Kevin Spacey in 'Se7en'" of celebrity serial killers, and dispatch my prey in a manner befitting the way they achieved their fame. Like killing Nicki Minaj by just stuffing her full of d**ks until she explodes. But that sounds like an awful lot of work.

Then again, it's not like we're killing Nobodys, here, we're talking about killing the rich and famous. So I guess you really DO need to go the extra mile and put the extra work into it. Christ, even as they're being murdered these narcissistic parasites are getting special treatment. It Never Ends!!!

pennydreadful 01-04-2015 11:52 PM

Truthfully, I don't even know who most modern celebs are (mostly due to the self-imposed bubble that I live in). I don't even know how many Kardashians there are! I don't think I'd even know enough of the current crop to create a Top 5 I Want To See Dead list. Has Paris Hilton faded into obscurity, or is she still a thing?

Cure 01-04-2015 11:52 PM

Cool, now it's a thread about murdering people. Enjoy your sick fantasies, I guess.

Leo656 01-04-2015 11:53 PM

Anyone who hasn't murdered at least seven people a day inside their imagination has never been on the parkway.

pennydreadful 01-04-2015 11:55 PM

The serial killer thread needed a companion.

Also, we've reached the subject of murder in less than 20 posts - that's gotta be some kind of record.
