Why are some people hesitant of, or even outright hate, Tumblr?

I really don't understand why some people consider Tumblr a bad website/blog. Tumblr has a different variety of people who are all special in one way or another. Generally, I think Tumblr has a very nice environment, so I don't really understand the hate. Can someone give me a valid reason why they dislike/hate/are weary of Tumblr? I would like to see some feedback.

Tumblr is fine as a website, it's just overrun with drama queens who look for problems where there are none.

Shark_Blade 05-22-2015 05:43 PM

Those people just don't know how to enjoy life (yes tumblr is one aspect of it, a modern one at that).

Just unfollow those people you don't like and you should be fine. :tcool:

I got Tumblr, because I have to fallow the 'click' ... Or I loose watchers ... etc etc. I'm still after two years thinking what THEME I should take.

Katie 05-22-2015 06:57 PM

Drama. Special pronouns. Otherkin. People who try to be the "most" special. Crabs in a bucket. People with limited life experience who bite at people who actually do live in the real world.

Take that stuff away and it might be a good site.

People hate Tumblr because:
  • It's an echo chamber
  • They have ruined the term "trigger warning"
  • Their tagging habits. "negative tw", "hands tw", tagging selfies or drawings of ****ing characters as "scopophobia" THAT ISN'T WHAT SCOPOPHOBIA IS YOU ****ING IDIOTS
  • Tucutes. I ****ing hate tucutes. [People who think being trans is a feel u can feel with ur feels and isn't due to debilitating mental disconnect between what the mind thinks the body should look and how the body actually looks; it's a ****ing medical condition]
  • A few years back they had a bunch of pro-anaorexia blogs. Ew.
  • Their attitudes toward mental illness
  • "Don't follow me if"
  • People that think being gay or trans is a choice and that if you CHOOSE to be cis and het you're awful
  • Tumblr asexuals that don't know what being asexual actually means
  • "Demisexual" which was a term made up by some kid on a forum
  • Trans-ethnic and trans-fat
  • To say nothing of their otherkin culture there. Actual kids that eat dog food because they claim to be dog-kin.
  • Oh and Tucutes. The term tucute was even coined by some chick that thinks cis people are witches and being trans is some sort of Madoka RP thing

I have some ****ing war stories.

AFAIK there are still pro-ana blogs there; I saw one this week that was using fitness tags on its posts. :ohwell:

My view of tumblr: "Look, a social site that has a neat picture or post about something I just searched for online."

pennydreadful 05-23-2015 02:10 AM

Honestly, to me it's just like any other social site. There's good stuff there, there's bad stuff, there's cool people, there's douchey people. It's a mixed bag - I just stick with the content and people I enjoy and steer clear of the content and people that I don't. The only people I actually talk to on Tumblr are all TMNT fans so I'm not really exposed to any more high-level douchery than I would be, say... here in the 'drome. :trazz:

Netkeeper hit the nail head on. It's a great place, but oh man can you fall into some weird ****. Or attract weird ****.

A friend of mine got, for around two months attacked constantly by some sad poly-otherkin (one of the kin was Bosimer, which is an elf race in a video game:lol:) simply because my friend expressed her opinion on snowflake pronouns and that they/them was far better since it's an actual pronoun.

Oh no, the tucutes and their army of crazy pronouns!

The worst part about some of these Tumblr people is that not all of them are kids, some of them are my age. That's scary.

TheSkeletonMan939 05-23-2015 08:36 AM

I kinda figured this would be a Purple Kraken thread.

Netkeeper's got the right idea though.

PangolinFeets 05-23-2015 10:28 AM

I use Tumblr fairly often and rarely encounter anything that annoys me. I basically only use it for art, fan art, and comics stuff. A lot of artists, animators, and web comic creators exclusively use Tumblr to display their work. That's why I use it.

This. Tumblr's reputation is that of a collection of "special snowflakes" who can be triggered by the slightest of things and have a special pronoun to show just how special they are. And oh gooodness "Headmates"....just because you really like Loki from Avengers doesn't mean he's part of your multiple personalities.

CyberCubed 05-23-2015 06:38 PM

I actually found tumblr confusing to navigate at first. Most of it is just people reblogging pictures of something, but if they don't tag their posts they all get lost and jumbled together.

Its also rather hard to actually communicate and have a discussion like a forum. You post a reply to something and you have no idea if anyone will ever read it. Its not like a forum.

Powder 05-23-2015 08:05 PM

Yeah, I don't understand how/why people use it for socializing. It's good to keep tabs on artists you like but the interactivity of it all is lacking, to me.
& your experience there will more or less be fine if you stick to your niche interests but it's very easy to fall into traps...

IndigoErth 05-23-2015 08:10 PM

Agree with finding it confusing. I have an account, but rarely use it. Someone gave me an attitude over something once and I was so annoyed wondering how you just simply reply directly to the damn person. lol Mostly I just... look at stuff.

If there is that much "specialness" infesting it... I swear, I've never been the trolling sort, but there is a tiny part of me that would be almost just a little curious to see how quickly it goes up in flames... :P

Lethal Lullaby 05-23-2015 08:35 PM

Tumblr's okay.

One of my friends has a Tumblr just to find the most ridiculous posts/pics/whatever and share them with me and some of our other friends. Then we'd all have a good laugh about it.

I still probably wouldn't get one, since I'd probably never use it. :P

I don't really have any problems with Tumblr, There's pretty much a Tumblr for anything, Which I think its good.

Netkeeper 05-23-2015 08:45 PM

I've never understood how someone can find it confusing to communicate on Tumblr. Just reblog the post and add what you want to say. Common sense.
