Black Turtles Matter
 

This is Raph in his IWF outfit.
No really I got pissed off at a black wash project and decided I would spray the whole figure black and dry brush him.

What in the God awful Hell have I done?!

Is there any fixing him?

Define "fixing". :tlol:

My suggestion would be to pick some other color to do accents with, think of it as an art piece (Think Night Shadow Leonardo, for example), & call it a day.

Maybe paint the eyes white, pretend he's in stealth mode.

As for the views, half of that is Google bots, & this section doesn't get much attention anyway.

Personally, I've always looked upon Donatello as the "Turtle of color." I blame the action figures.

Well, I actually thought about doing a Night Shadow Raph, but my problem is I used a Gloss Black Enamel spray. Night Shadow Leo (who can be seen in the background of the pictures) is a flat black. I wanted to use flat black, but I didn't have any on hand at the time of my temper tantrum. The other problem with the gloss black enamel is I leave finger prints every time I touch the figure...

Do you (or anyone) think there is a way to remove the surface layer of paint? I actually wouldn't mind leaving it in the cracks and crevices of the sculpt. Would a paint remover compromise the figure in any way?

You used enamel? Chuck the figure away, buy a new one, and kick yourself repeatedly for being dumb enough to use enamel paints. Acrylic's the way to go!

I started at the feet doing a blackwash with acrylic. Everything was going great and it looked superb in the wraps, but once I got to the unpainted, molded plastics (the green skin, plastron, shell, etc) the paint just absolutely would NOT adhere to and stay in the grooves of the sculpt. The factory paint worked well as a primer, but anything unpainted wasn't as accepting. The figure had been thoroughly washed, wiped clean, and air dried. I was using Testors Model Masters acrylics and I experimented with different consistencies, but nothing worked.

So what do you suggest in a situation like that? It seems like unless I get a good primer base coat on the unpainted areas I'm not going to be able to accomplish the look I want to accomplish. Suggestions?

If you want to remove the spray paint. Go buy some Simple Green concentrate. Regular will work, but may take longer. Dunk him in a plastic tub. Check hourly, and see if it will scrub off with a toothbrush. Leave him overnight or for days at a time if needed. I've left plastic soak in Simple Green for almost a month. It will not hurt the plastic, factory paint varies from toyline to toyline.
I've heard similar results using Purple Power and Super Clean, but I've never used it myself.

Try soaking it in distilled paint thinner. But given you used enamel, there may be no return from this hell.

Hahaha, I actually like it to some extent. I think it would actually be cool to go back with white and make a high gloss B&W figure in the reverse of what we're used to seeing. But since I can't even really touch it that won't work.

the spray painted one actually looks pretty great, did you use plasti dip or just regular spray paint

Which one? They've both been sprayed.

Raphael was sprayed with a high gloss black enamel.
Leonardo was sprayed with a flat black primer designed specifically for bonding with plastics. Be warned though; nothing really bonds well with that rubbery, flexible PVC type material that the plastron is comprised of. Everything else seems to be fine.

No paint is going to stick well if you don't wash your turtles w/ dawn dish soap and a good tooth brush straight out of the package. When toys are made the molds are sprayed w/ mold release. You have to wash that stuff off yourself as the end user. Custom toys 101.

Parts of Raph may be sticky or tacky. That will never go away, that's the enamel on plastic. If that's the case, for $8.99, chuck 'em and end your frustration.

When you do make mistakes w/ acrylic, purple power is cheaper & more diluted than simple green. You get more for your money and it works great.

Yeah, I think maybe you missed where I said they had been washed, rinsed, and dried several times. That included toothbrush scrubbing.

The enamel actually bonded very well with Raph everywhere except the plastron, only because of the material it's made of.

The primer "specially designed to bond to plastic" I used for Leo on the other hand didn't work worth a damn. He looks good, but he's entirely sticky.

Anyway, Karai Serpent joined the Black Brigade today. I have plans for her. I won't be able to take pics of her completely blacked out until I get back to the office Tuesday.

yep missed it, these will make for a kool display if you keep at it with the different characters. i like what you're doing w/ the all black, looks good. I did all white turtles w/ red bandannas and black highlights, so I'm into this thread.

Thanks, I was actually intending to use it for a base coat for something else, but I do like it as well and may actually revisit it at some point.

You got pictures of those white turtles?
And how are you getting paint to stay on these plastrons?
